Sholosh Seudot You Gotta be Kiddin Me Halacha Discussion Shimon had a long-standing practice of buying a lottery card each week from Reuven s lottery stand. Rather than coming each week to buy a card, he paid in advance and sent the numbers be wanted by fax. Reuven would process his orders; copying Shimon s numbers onto the lottery cards. One morning Shimon woke up and was astounded to see in the newspaper that he had chosen the winning numbers. I just won 20,000 dollars! he told his family. Then, he took another look at the card Reuven had filled out and was crestfallen to see that Reuven had copied the numbers incorrectly. He had written a nine instead of a seven for one of the numbers. If not for your careless mistake, I would have won 20,000 dollars! Shimon told Reuven. Now my card is worthless! Shimon demanded that Reuven reimburse him for the money he lost. They brought their case to R Zilberstein shilta for his decision What is the Answer? With Rabbi Rothman during Shalosh Seuda ~ Need a Place for Seder? For a Shabbat Meal? Please contact at chanirosenberg@gmail.com if you are seeking to be a part of a Seder, a Yom Tov meal or for Shabbat. One can also call the Rabbi at 416-876-0691 if they prefer. The ATCS leadership and membership are truly glad to help accommodate people and are glad to assist. Please contact Ms. Rosenberg as soon as possible in order for us to organize the perfect location for you to attend Help Us Organize Home Groups in Our Area The Rabbi is seeking to continue to organize home groups where people who are not presently part of our community and/or are interested in investigating Jewish life & Judaism. If you are interested in hosting a home group for your friends, acquaintances or business associates, please contact the Rabbi so that he can add it to the growing list of home programmes. Home groups can be on specific topics or be Stump the Rabbi sessions. This is an excellent and nonconfrontational manner to give people an opportunity to ask questions and learn about Torah. Please contact the Rabbi at: 416-876-0691or arothman@aish.com

Profiles This week we continueour new feature in the bulletin with another instalment of PROFILES Each week, we profile a different family in a (hopefully) fun and non-invasive mannerto help us get to know our fellow shul members. This week we spotlight Harry and Mona Sturmwind. TCS: You took a circuitous route to get to Toronto. Can you give us a brief summary? Mona:We both grew up in Edmonton and met there when we were young.we and our 2 boys moved to Orlando, Florida for an opportunity that did not fully pan out. After a few years we moved back to Edmontonwith Harry to go to school to study IT and then moved to Calgary. As the kids got into Yiddishkeit we knew that they would eventually move out east. They were the impetus for our moving to Toronto. Harry: As we became frummer in Calgary I remember walking home one day with a holocaust survivor whose 5 kids became frum and moved to New York. He was telling me about how he only saw his kids twice a year and I knew then that I did not want to be in that situation. Harry:Both of us went to day school and had a Jewish connection even if we were not fully observant. Mona:I always wanted to become more religious. My family had a traditional background.the kids just helped get us there faster. TCS:Which place feels the most like home to you? Put another way if you could move the TCS community and family with you where would you take us? Mona:Toronto definitely feels like home but if we could move the community I would chose someplace warm like Orlando or Boca. Harry:I miss the warmth of Alberta people. Calgary folks get insulted if you don t say hello. And don t get me started on Toronto drivers. But Toronto is home now and we love the community. TCS:And how did you end up at AISH? Harry:Our Rabbi in Calgary encouraged us to go to a bigger Jewish community. He directed us specifically to AISH just based on reputation and where we were in our observance. TCS: Where are your children living? Harry:Our 2 sons are both married one in New York, one in Toronto. Efron is working at NCSY and he and his wife Devorah have 3 children. Yonahworks in Real Estate and he and his wife Ronit have 1 child. TCS:What do you do for a living? Harry: I have been working in IT for over 20 years.moving to TorontoI left a great secure government job at a technical school SAIT. People thought we were crazy but we left on simply Emunah. We came here without jobs, and my leaving a high paying good benefits job. Mona: I work on accounts receivable for a food import/export company. I am self-taught with regards to accounting as I used to do accounting for my father s business. The herring for kiddish comes from the company I work for. TCS: So if your company is losing money that is a red herring?

TCS Editor: Seriously. That is what you come up with? TCS: Did you ever question the decision of moving to Toronto? Harry:Yes as it was a struggle at first especially considering the job I left behind but we would not have the Yiddishkeit that we have today if we stayed. Mona:Or the relationship with the kids. TCS: Mona, you are one of the key contributors to the kiddish ladies? How did you get involved and how did you come to play such a significant role? Mona:I was asked by Vierka to help with Seudat Shlishit.Once I started helping she kept asking. Our Rabbi in Calgary suggested that we get involved and volunteer and that would help us meet people. I am a doer not a leader so it works well for me. TCS:Harry, have you had any volunteering involvement in AISH. Has Mona tried roping you in or are you a liability in the kitchen? Harry: I do photography at the annual dinner, but Mona is the star when it comes to volunteering. TCS:Favourite Shabbat class? Harry:I like Rabbi Rothman s class. He does a lot of research and has interesting topics. Mona:I get the highlight package from Harry over Shabbat lunch. TCS: Favourite type of vacation? Harry:Lot of car trips. Mona: We have covered a lot of Canada and the U.S. We have made trips from Calgary to Florida, Alberta to California and many more. The kids got used to long trips at an early age. TCS:Any hobbies or interests? Harry:Photography is a hobby. We go out on Sundays when it is nicer. I really enjoy Sci-fi and Jewish History with Modern Israeli historybeing my main focus.the latter started as a fascination but now I could teach. Mona:I enjoy crafts and needlepoint.but playing with the grandchildren is my most enjoyable activity. TCS:Anything better in the world? Mona:No. The nachas in unbelievable. TCS Editor: Please, please no nachos jokes. TCS: Okay, but just this one time. Harry: This is what moving to Toronto was all about. TCS: Who is the first to cry at a movie? Harry: Wouldn t be me. I avoid movies like that. Life has enough tsuris why pay good money to see someone else s tsuris?

TCS: Any shout outs? Mona: Frumie, Marcia, Vierka, and Joelle and many others. They all were so great in making us feel welcome from the very beginning. Harry:Al and Seymour, Irving and Douglas. We slid into a nice social group very easily. TCS: Any condiment usage differences between Alberta and Ontario? Harry: Not that I can recall. TCS: You are forgetting your roots. TCS: So our President elect Steve formerly known as Stuart is busy this week draining buckets in March Madness. We are asking you to step in and be president for a week. What changes would you make? Harry:Look for better ways to find and keep young professionals.we have a noticeable gap from the young kids to the 40 year olds. It is vital to ensuring the shul s continuity. Calling all South Africans We need your pictures of beautiful scenery of South Africa and some with you as well to be included in our slideshow at the annual Tribute Dinner on May 16th. Please send digitally (if possible) to joelle.tcs@gmail.com or bring in your photos to the Shul office. It promises to be a beautiful evening of tribute to the South African Jewish community. Your assistance with photos of South Africa itself or some of the prominent places and people would be greatly appreciated.
