Your 2012-2013 Parish Council Members: Fr. Piotr Machnacki, SAC, Pastor Dan Weber President Becky Dmitrienko Greg Frost Eva Huschilt Elizabeth Ingle Koni Klaming Debbie MacIntosh Anne McKellar Tony Maruna Teresa Milton Laura Moniz Mary Scott Dina Guajardo Pastoral & Liturgy Coordinator Judy Kerr Office Administration 519.885.4480 Dear Families of St. Agnes Parish The beautiful and meaningful season of Christmas is here! We celebrate our liturgies around the stable where one more time the Baby Jesus will be born. One more time we ll sing Gloria in excelsis Deo and we ll put our gifts near the stable with the Wise Men. First of all we ll put our great moments for which we want to give thanks for our Families, our schools and Teachers, our very dedicated ill Parishioners, and all people of good will and open hearts. We glorify the Holy Family, first of all Mary who is always a good example, supporter and protector for our community in the statue of Our Lady of Fatima. This year is a year dedicated to Faith, according to the request of our Pope Benedict XVI. Faith is a precious gift from Heaven and I ask you to bow your heads in front of the Messiah who is coming to the stable and ask for this precious pearl the gift of Faith. On the Faith, as on the solid foundation, we can build a stronger and more fruitful community. Dear Young Couples - wives and husbands- you are, with your children, the future of our faithful Saint Agnes Parish community. I ask and I beg you to open, more and more, your faithful hearts, for the building of our community and be generous in the sharing of our Catholic Faith, which is not only your gift, but is given to you for others as well. Beloved Mary, Mother of Faith, please guide us to your Son, Baby Jesus. St. Agnes, our small holy Saint, please help our girls and boys to deepen the Faith in the coming 2013. Merry Christmas and a Happy Blessed New Year 2013. Yours in Christ, Fr. Piotr Machnacki, Pastor On the Year of Faith: In his Apostolic Letter, Porta Fidei Pope Benedict XVI announced a Year of Faith which will begin on October 11, 2012, the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, and which will end on November 24, 2013, the Solemnity of Christ the King. Pope Benedict hopes that the Year of Faith will help Catholics appreciate the gift of faith, deepen their relationship with God and strengthen their commitment to sharing faith with others. This Year of Faith is meant to turn us once again to the Lord Jesus, to rediscover our faith and to encourage us to be faith-filled witnesses who inspire others. It is a special opportunity for us to look again at the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the documents of the Second Vatican Council. A Message from Parish Council Chair, Dan Weber: Merry Christmas! This edition of our newsletter will outline many initiatives that have been undertaken this fall, as well as those that we can look forward to in 2013. One of these, our Parish survey, has been underway since the beginning of December, and has had well over 100 responses completed to date. There is some invaluable feedback that we will be digesting early in 2013, with the intention to help us develop a vision and plan for the coming years. If you have not yet had a chance to complete the survey, you can find it online on our website, www.saintagnescatholicchurch.org, or pick up a paper copy in the Communications Centre in the vestibule. The survey will close December 31 st. Parish Council Meetings Parishioners are always welcome to attend Parish Council meetings. Please inform the Chair of your intention to join us. See our website under Parish Council : Contact info, meetings schedule, council newsletters & more! www.saintagnescatholicchurch.org Thank you for your continued prayers, and your continued contributions to our Parish community. I look forward to seeing everyone in 2013, and I wish you a Merry Christmas, a happy and healthy holiday season, and a blessed start to 2013. Dan Highlights from Parish Council Administration - Judy Kerr: The parish office is a hub of activity, and central to keeping our parish life moving smoothly. The office reminds you to inquire for all variety of needs including: connection with outreach programs such as St. Vincent de Paul, request for a visit by Fr. Piotr or a Eucharistic Minister for the sick or elderly, for registering of new families, the booking of Mass intentions and of course the arrangements of the celebration of Baptism, weddings & funerals. Please contact the office directly for assistance. Pastoral Assistant - Dina Guajardo on Sacramental Preparation & our schools: The St. Agnes Pastoral Team has been focusing on the sacramental preparation program, as one of the main sources for strengthening our faith community. As every sacramental celebration is truly a parish celebration, we all as parishioners of St. Agnes must consider it our responsibility as a parish community - praying for every child or young person that will receive the gift of the sacrament. This coming 2013, we as a team - myself, Fr. Piotr, our school representatives; Mary Scott (St. Matthew), Laura Moniz (St. Luke), Koni Klaming & Becky Dmitrienko, (St. Agnes) & volunteers, will continue to work diligently to develop and strengthen the relationship between our parish and our schools. Our sacramental preparation program will continue to focus on preparing our students, not only for the sacrament they are about to receive, but developing a greater sense of belonging to our St. Agnes community. Thank you to all of the volunteers for your commitment to our program your assistance and modeling of your faith life to our families has been an incredible gift. Let us all continue to pray for our young people & their families who will celebrate First Holy Communion, First Reconciliation & Confirmation in 2013. office@saintagnescatholicchurch.org us on Facebook Search Saint Agnes Church Waterloo Pg 2

Finance - Tony Maruna: Reflecting on 2012, it seemed like a quiet year relative to the previous fiscal 2011 period where we took on a big loan with support from the Diocese and raised some significant funds to apply towards our roof upgrade. We did manage to complete the lower roof upgrade in 2012 with support from our Bingo fundraising, and generous parishioner donations. During 2012 there were some great strides for our organization as we were able to strengthen our volunteer base and had new talented parishioners stepping up to help with succession. I want to thank Ronnie Mendonsa, and Maureen Ross on their commitment to keeping our books up to date after A very special thanks goes out to our St. Agnes parishioners whose recent financial donations provided for: debt reduction towards our roof, contribution to operations, repair of our church bells, the purchase of our new Altar Server albs & the addition of our new set of Sanctuary Bells. Thank you! years of support from Janet Levis whose dedication to this important role was exceptional. We thank Janet again for her service. We are also grateful for the many volunteers who often times do not get mentioned or are sometimes taken for granted but are so important to the future success of our Parish. This time of year I would especially like to say thank you to those who have consistently supported our Parish with their weekly financial donations, for which the Parish so deeply relies on to survive. Some challenges ahead exist as we strive to raise enough to cover our expenses, and continue to focus on efficiencies and a strategy to build our parish and solidify our foundation. Our goal this year is to provide a financial report early in 2013. Thank you St. Agnes for your support once again of our Pre-Christmas Bazaar & our annual Poinsettia Program. Together these programs raised approximately $1600 for our parish! THANK YOU! St. Vincent de Paul - Eva Huschilt: Our group continues to give emergency food assistance to those in need in our geographic area. Calls vary from 25 45 per month, serving 45 79 adults & 43-73 children. Some new families are added regularly. Calls can come regularly each month, as needed, or can serve a short term or one time need as circumstances change. Christmas hampers this year were assembled for 75 families, and included your angel tree gifts, toys from the Knights of Columbus, $2700 in Zehrs gift cards & assorted donations of meats & treats. A surprise food drive by St. Matthew School this month generously filled our shelves thank you St. Matthew!! A special thanks as well to parishioners & our CWL who have given financially to our Society this Christmas, for which we are truly grateful. With what we are given, we share with those less fortunate. But, let us remember that it is the poor who are giving us the opportunity to serve, to fulfill our desire to help others. We do need each other. Catholic Women s League - Anne McKellar: The CWL is a national organization rooted in Gospel values, calling members to holiness through service. The League regularly provides prayer service & honor guard for deceased members, funeral lunches, assists with the lending library operation, provides flowers to shut-ins & many other means of service. Women16 years & older - come join us and serve God & country with your participation. Mark your calendars for special CWL events coming up in January & February (please be sure to see Events section of this newsletter). A blessed, peaceful Christmas to all! office@saintagnescatholicchurch.org us on Facebook Search Saint Agnes Church Waterloo Pg 3

Health Committee - Teresa Milton: St. Agnes Health Committee is a new initiative that will directly serve our parish. I came on board in early 2011 in response to a need to deliver health/spiritual topics of concern and resources in a seminar format to our 4 Waterloo Catholic Parish communities. Now I would like to develop the committee to provide resources, seminars, courses and care for our church community. Celiac Issues? Gluten free hosts are available for you! Please see Fr. Piotr before Mass for this request. Upcoming projects will include First Aid training for interested persons, health related topics of a physical/emotional/spiritual nature, and a comprehensive resource centre of local agencies to help you get information about many health topics. Currently under exploration is the possibility of nursing foot care - an important service especially for the elderly, currently available in several other local churches. Be sure to look in our bulletin and the website for more information on nursing foot care in January. Merry Christmas to the many wonderful St. Agnes families and best wishes for 2013! Communications - Elizabeth Ingle: Keeping the parish updated on news, education & special events is a busy task, and we as your council strive to keep you as up to date as possible via many available communication channels: from Fr. Piotr directly, the bulletin, website, email & facebook postings, commentator announcements and via the Communication Centre. Please contact us with questions anytime! The Pope on Twitter??? Yes! If you haven t heard, the Vatican is embracing the importance of social media as a key communication tool in our times. Pope Benedict sent his first tweet on December 12 th. Would you like to connect with Pope Benedict? Follow His Holiness via his personal account @pontifex What s new? Are you a new family to our parish? Welcome to our St. Agnes community! Please be sure to fill out a registration form (found in the Communications Centre of the Vestibule), or contact the parish office. We can then be sure to connect you with parish groups of interest, and keep you informed of what's going on in our community. Do you have new circumstances? Has something changed in your circumstances which the parish could assist with? Perhaps a parent or elder can no longer get to church regularly & needs Holy Communion brought to them? Maybe your family has welcomed a new baby & needs to arrange for Baptism? Are you struggling with your Faith journey & need to speak with a priest or a parish ministry representative? For these & many other emotional, physical or spiritual needs, please contact Judy in the parish office for assistance & direction, & to connect you with our outreach services so that we as a parish may better serve your needs. office@saintagnescatholicchurch.org us on Facebook Search Saint Agnes Church Waterloo Pg 4

Our Vestibule: Our vestibule/entrance area has recently undergone a transition to a more clear and uncluttered space. We are continuing to adjust & tweak the floor plan, to serve both the goal of a clean & organized space, while maintaining good access to the information, education & updates you seek. New Vocations page on our website: This new addition gives us updates from our Seminarian & Deacon candidates so we can follow their journey. All three gentlemen, Seminarians David Reitzel & Curtis Miller and Deacon Candidate, Ed MacIntosh have provided their latest news & updates from their particular journeys. Haven t seen it yet? Visit our parish website & click on Vocations to read both past & new letters. CWL Lending library: The very popular Lending Library is now located in our Family Room. Please be sure to pop in after Mass to browse an exceptional array of books, CD s & DVD s for adults & children. The library is open Sunday mornings after both 9:00 & 11:00 Masses. THANK YOU to the countless volunteers, regularly seen & those behind the scenes, who consistently give of their time & talents for our parish & God s Holy Church. You are integral to our community & are greatly valued for your contributions. THANK YOU & God Bless You! Volunteer opportunities Are you interested in sharing your time, skills and talents with your community? We have regular and occasional opportunities in the areas of Coffee Sundays, Maintenance, Bingo Operation, Decorating, Communications and more! Please contact the parish office by phone or email to let us know that you are interested. Thanks! Catholic Church trivia: Ever wonder why things are done the way they are? Look for a new & interesting on-going addition to our bulletin & website, offering interesting insight into our practices & traditions. Thank you to Debbie & Ed MacIntosh for this sample of what s to come: Q: Why do we now also hear the ringing of bells after communion? A: Years ago, when Mass was in Latin, many didn t know when to make the postures of the congregation. And often, churches had a wall, a grid, a curtain, a rail, or simply a high sanctuary wherein visibility was difficult, if not impossible. Bells were used to tell people when to do things, or what was happening. Bells are optional at Holy Mass, but the new sound we are hearing is actually a very old one: the bells after communion were rung to signify that the tabernacle was now closed, the Blessed Sacrament was no longer exposed, and there is no longer any need to kneel - you may now sit in contemplation to await the Concluding Rites. office@saintagnescatholicchurch.org us on Facebook Search Saint Agnes Church Waterloo Pg 5
