This is a parable about a scoundrel, yet it praises him and his wisdom. The manager has been given notice by his CEO and he decides to even up the tables, while he still can, for those who are struggling to pay their debts to the company. The manager is praised for his astuteness, he has his priorities straight, he is happy to let debt go, to redistribute the load. Of course, there is self-interest on his part but Jesus is telling us that the only value the money really has is in the way it is disposed of and in doing this the manager wins the hearts and minds of the workers. The manager won t be the most successful man on the planet compared to the children of the light who are more concerned with accounts than with real people. The manager is free-spirited and can be trusted to value what is really important. He knows that none of this material wealth is permanent and uses the authority that he has to relieve the suffering of those who are indebted to his company. Yes, he is a bit of a scoundrel, but Jesus liked scoundrels, once their efforts were put to good use. God s dream for creation is different from Pharaoh s dream or Rome s dream or Wall Street s dream. And at the centre of God s economy is the idea of redistribution It is an invitation to holy mischief! Shane Claiborne Tríona Doherty Athlone, Co Roscommon Email trionad@gmail.com

He said to him, Sit down and quickly write one for fifty. Lord, unlock our doors. Father, are we to be sly as foxes, shrewd as lawyers, sharp as two-edged swords? Alright, then teach us your, skill: the cunning that is yours. Make us into prudent children of the light watching your daughters and sons, with the caring eyes of your child, Jesus. What would Amos say today? That our scales are rigged for cheating, and corporate greed is the norm? That women in maquilas in Salvador are being trampled? and that Guatemalan, coffee growers cannot feed their own kids? Please bring your justice into everything. Teach us to truly love our neighbor as ourselves. Jesus, earth s ransom, have you chosen us to bring your blessed promise to all the world? Help us, today, yesterday and tomorrow, help us to love our neighbor well. Anne Osideck

CHURCH CLEANING GUILD New members needed to join either of two Teams who look after the cleaning of the church on alternate Tuesdays after 10am Mass. Lord of the oppressed Jesus said to his disciples: You cannot be the slave both of God and of money. Thank God all of us are much better off today than we were in past generations and even better off than we ever expected to be. This brings with it a sense of security and lessens people s anxiety about the future. But it also can bring with it a sense of self-sufficiency in which we think that we are in need of no one, not even God. We become selfish, and the more we have the more we want. The challenge of the Gospel today is to be thankful for all we have and to learn to share it with those who are in need. When we become selfish with our money we also become selfish with our time and this has a serious effect on our marriage and family relationships and the quality of our lives together becomes less loving. We also refuse to give time to building up our parish community because we are too busy or too important. Johnny Doherty, CSsR BINGO The Parish BINGO every Friday at 8.30pm in the Pastoral Centre. All welcome Get Well to all our parishioners who are sick, at home or in hospital, we wish you a speedy recovery Healing Mass in Knocklyon parish next Wednesday, Sept.21st at 11am, all are welcome, especially anyone suffering from illness of any sort.
