Under pressure, James brought back recusancy fines and Catholic priests made to leave England. His father was a Catholic who protected a priest. Catesby was a very influential person. His more relaxed attitude led to Catholics becoming more visible in society. The plotters rented a cellar under Parliament, 36 barrels of gunpowder are stored there.
