History of the Church Wrap Up Randy Broberg November 25, 2003

The Story of the Church: Background Of Its Birth Randy Broberg

9/9 The Story of the Church: Background of its Birth If you discovered a Bible on a remote desert island, could you imagine Christianity as it is today? Who are today s Pagans? Do we make deals with God? How superstitious are we? (black cats, walking under ladders, etc.) Should Christians believe in good luck and bad luck?

Expansion Through Persecution The Church Until Constantine Randy Broberg

9/16 Expansion Through Persecution: The Church Until Constantine What was the apostolic missionary strategy? Where in the world do we see conditions most similarly ripe as we saw in the early Roman empire? Is Europe once again desperately in need of missionary activity?

Going to Church Early Church Worship Services Randy Broberg

9/23 Going to Church: The Evolution of Church Worship Services Should churches have Saturday or even Friday evening weekly services as substitutes for the Sunday Service? How important are church buildings? Is it more biblical to meet in houses? During prayer, does your mind ever wander? Would focusing on a picture of Christ on the cross help you keep focused?

From Elders to Bishops Early Church Governance Randy Broberg

9/30 From Elders to Bishops: The Evolution of Church Governance How similar or different is the early church monarchical bishop from the 20th century evangelical church s pastor who rules without elders? To what extent should local churches go solo vs. submit to some larger group of the visible church, such as a denomination? Is the list of offices in the New Testament inclusive? That is, does it list all the offices a local church can have or is it permissible for a church to add other offices such as worship leader? Do you believe that only those who are ordained as elders or pastors can distribute the Lord s Supper or baptize believers?

How We Got Our Bible Early Church Adopts the Canon Randy Broberg

10/07 How We Got Our Bible: The Church Adopts the Canon If you are Catholic and believe that Church tradition contains authority equal to the Scriptures, then what advantage is there in having a Canon at all? Does God still speak today through new revelations? What role does the Old Testament have in the Christian s Life?

Emperors and Popes The Relationship of Church and State Randy Broberg

10/14 Emperors and Popes: The Relationship of Church and State Was Constantine s conversion a good or bad thing for Christianity? Which is better, a Christian nation or a secular one with complete freedom of religion? Did any good at all come out of the merger of Church and State? Can any good ever come of it? What should a Catholic do if the pope and his/her government are in conflict?

Christianity Confronts Culture The Church Absorbs Paganism Randy Broberg

10/21 Christianity Confronts Culture: The Absorption of Paganism What s our proper response to sexual immorality and violence in entertainment? What value does non-christian philosophy have for us? Can we use it to discover truth? What about science? What s the difference? Should Christian families read Harry Potter? Should Christian children trick or treat? Do we synthesize with our culture or create our own culture and seek to conquer with it? Which did the early church do? To what extent should the Church adopt aspects of local culture so as to become more acceptable or successful? To what extent should missionaries adapt the message of the Gospel to accommodate local culture?

Creeds and Heretics The Church Defines and Disciplines Randy Broberg

10/28 Creeds and Heretics: The Church Defines and Disciplines Should the church universal seek to hammer out creeds as a sort of political event, complete with compromises and even horsetrading? Is that really how doctrine is to be formulated? Should church denominations use adherence to creeds as a way of governing individual congregations? If a local church disagrees with the Nicene Creed or Westminster Confession should the church be disciplined? How? How should the Church handle those who first apostatize (fall away or deny Christ) and then later seek readmission to the Church as members? Is I m sorry sufficient? If Mary is not the Theotokos/God Bearer, what exactly is she then?

From Believers to Babies The Evolution of Christian Baptism Randy Broberg

11/04 From Believers to Babies: The Evolution of Christian Baptisms When you re baptized, does anything at all happen to you or is it a mere testimony? If a mere testimony, whose testimony is given when babies are baptized? What testimony is that? How does it relate to Biblical baptism? Aren t there some verses that imply baptism washes away sins? What do those verses mean? Should we re-baptize those baptized as infants? Is there a second baptism of the Holy Spirit? If not, what exactly did happen in Acts 8 and 19?

From Agape Feast to Mass The Evolution of the Lord s Supper Randy Broberg

11/11 From Agape Feast to the Mass: The Evolution of the Lord's Supper Can a group of Christians celebrate the Lord s Supper apart from a meeting of a local church? For example, could an Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, Campus Crusade, Navigators, etc. meet and partake in the Lord s Supper? Must an elder (bishop) be present for a church group to celebrate the Lord s supper as Ignatius said? When we take the Lord s Supper, is Christ present? In what way? In what way is he not present? What are the logical consequences of believing that you receive grace from sacraments and only from one official source?

Gratias tibi ago! Valeti, disculpi.
