` Sign of Jonah Dan & Brenda Cathcart 5/8/2011 When the Pharisees and Sadducees came to Yeshua seeking a sign from heaven, Yeshua rebuked them for their inability to discern the times. Matthew 16:1-4 MKJV 1 The Pharisees and the Sadducees came to Him, tempting Him. And they asked Him that He would show them a sign from Heaven. 2 He answered and said to them, When it is evening, you say, Fair weather; for the sky is red. 3 And in the morning, Foul weather today; for the sky is red and gloomy. Hypocrites! You can discern the face of the sky, but you cannot see the signs of the times! 4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign. And there shall no sign be given to it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah. And He left them and went away. Matthew 12:38-40 Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we want to see a sign from you. 39 But He answered and said to them, An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign. And there shall be no sign given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the huge fish, so the Son of man shall be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (MKJV) The Messiah would die, be in the grave three days, and be brought back to life. Jonah 2:10 And the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out on the dry land. (MKJV) God is the one who gives missions to both Jonah and Yeshua. They are both to take the message of repentance to a sinful people. Jonah 1:14-16 NKJV 14 Therefore they cried out to the LORD and said, "We pray, O LORD, please do not let us perish for this man's life, and do not charge us with innocent blood; for You, O LORD, have done as it pleased You." 15 So they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging. 16 Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to the LORD and took vows. Isaiah 53:10 KJV 10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. Matthew 27:24 NKJV 24 When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, "I am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see to it." Luke 23:34 NKJV 34 Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do." And they divided His garments and cast lots. Your Notes John 2:18-22 MKJV 18 Then the Jews answered and said to Him, What sign do you show us, since you do these things? 19 Jesus answered and said to them, Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up. 20 Then the Jews said, This temple was forty-six years building, and will you rear it up in three days? 21 But He spoke of the temple of His body. 22 Therefore when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them, and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said. Luke 24:27 NKJV 27 And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. We need to be well-versed in scripture, both the Torah and the Brit Chadashah. As the times of His second return approaches, we need to be able to identify prophetic events as they occur. ` Luke 23:44-47 NKJV 44 Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45 Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two. 46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, "Father, 'into Your hands I commit My spirit.'" Having said this, He breathed His last. 47 So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, "Certainly this was a righteous Man!" The big fish swallows Jonah. He is as good as dead. There is no human hope for him. There in the belly of the fish, Jonah cries out in anguish to God. Jonah 2:1-5 NKJV 1 Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the fish's belly. 2 And he said: "I cried out to the LORD because of my affliction, And He answered me." Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, And You heard my voice. 3 For You cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the floods surrounded me; All Your billows and Your waves passed over me. 4 Then I said, 'I have been cast out of Your sight; Yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.' 5 The waters surrounded me, even to my soul; The deep closed around me; Weeds were wrapped around my head. Luke 22:42-44 NKJV 42 saying, "Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done." 43 Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44 And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. Luke 24:5-6 NKJV 5 Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 "He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, John 20:17 NKJV 17 Jesus said to her, "Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, 'I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.'" Deuteronomy 26:10 NKJV 10 'and now, behold, I have brought the firstfruits of the land which you, O LORD, have given me.' Then you shall set it before the LORD your God, and worship before the LORD your God. Yeshua is certainly looking on the temple with pleasure. After Jonah s resurrection, he is once again sent on his mission to preach repentance to the people of Nineveh. Jonah 3:2-4 NKJV 2 "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I tell you." 3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three-day journey in extent. 4 And Jonah began to enter the city on the first day's walk. Then he cried out and said, "Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!" Your Notes Matthew 27:29 NKJV 29 When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" Jonah trusted that he would look again to God s holy temple. Look: #5027. nabat, naw-bat' a primitive root; to scan, i.e. look intently at; by implication, to regard with pleasure, favor or care. Matthew 27:46 NKJV 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" Luke 23:46 NKJV 46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, "Father, 'into Your hands I commit My spirit.'" Having said this, He breathed His last. Jonah 3:5-10 NKJV 5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the ` least of them. 6 Then word came to the king of Nineveh; and he arose from his throne and laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes. 7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published throughout Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything; do not let them eat, or drink water. 8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God; yes, let every one turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. 9 Who can tell if God will turn and relent, and turn away from His fierce anger, so that we may not perish? 10 Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it. Matthew 28:19-20 NKJV 19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 "teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen. So, the sign of Jonah continues as the disciples spread the word of Yeshua s resurrection and the forgiveness of sin. Yeshua had a special mission for Peter. John 21:17 MKJV 17 He said to him the third time, Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me? Peter was grieved because He said to him a third time, Do you love Me? And he said to Him, Lord, You know all things, You know that I love You. Jesus said to him, Feed My sheep. Acts 4:5-7 NKJV 5 And it came to pass, on the next day, that their rulers, elders, and scribes, 6 as well as Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the family of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. 7 And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, "By what power or by what name have you done this?" Acts 4:15-17 NKJV 15 But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, 16 saying, "What shall we do to these men? For, indeed, that a notable miracle has been done through them is evident to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 17 "But so that it spreads no further among the people, let us severely threaten them, that from now on they speak to no man in this name." There is an interesting parallel between Peter and Jonah. The name Jonah is from the Strong s Concordance #3123 meaning dove. The name Simon is the Hebrew name Shimown from Strong s #8085 meaning hearing. Peter s original name means hearing is the son of the Spirit of God, or hearing comes from the Spirit of God. Matthew 13:14-15 NKJV 14 "And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says: 'Hearing you will hear and shall not understand, And seeing you will see and not perceive; 15 For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.' Peter and John testified before the council a second time. Your Notes Acts 2:38-40 NKJV 38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 "For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call." 40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation." Matthew 12:41 NKJV 41 "The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here. In Acts, Luke recorded that Peter and John took the message to the Jewish leaders. Volume 1 Yeshua our Cornerstone www.elshaddaiministries.us3 P a g e

Acts 5:29-33 NKJV 29 But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: "We ought to obey God rather than men. 30 "The God ` of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by hanging on a tree. 31 "Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. 32 "And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him. " 33 When they heard this, they were furious and plotted to kill them. But God is not ready to bring judgment just yet. He sent Stephen, a Jew with Greek origins, to the high priest. Acts 7:55-58 NKJV 55 But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, 56 and said, "Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!" 57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord; 58 and they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul. Amos 2:4 NKJV 4 Thus says the LORD: "For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, Because they have despised the law of the LORD, And have not kept His commandments. Their lies lead them astray, Lies which their fathers followed. The leaders drive most of the believers from Jerusalem. The message of repentance and salvation now goes out to the rest of the world, both Jew and Gentile. Jonah 1:2 NKJV 2 "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me." Pity: #2347. chuwc, khoos a primitive root; properly, to cover, i.e. (figuratively) to compassionate:--pity, regard, spare. Yeshua s message was not just for the Jewish people but for all nations. Isaiah 49:6 MKJV 6 And He said, It is but a little thing that You should be My servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to bring back the preserved ones of Israel; I will also give You for a light to the nations, to be My salvation to the end of the earth. Acts 22:17-21 NKJV 17 "Now it happened, when I returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple, that I was in a trance 18 "and saw Him saying to me, 'Make haste and get out of Jerusalem quickly, for they will not receive your testimony concerning Me.' 19 "So I said, 'Lord, they know that in every synagogue I imprisoned and beat those who believe on You. 20 'And when the blood of Your martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by consenting to his death, and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.' 21 "Then He said to me, 'Depart, for I will send you far from here to the Gentiles.'" Acts 22:22 NKJV 22 And they listened to him until this word, and then they raised their voices and said, "Away with such a fellow from the earth, for he is not fit to live!" Isaiah 8:14 MKJV 14 And He shall be a sanctuary for you, but for a stone of stumbling, and for a rock of falling to both the houses of Israel, for a trap and for a snare to the people of Jerusalem. Your Notes Jonah 4:1-2 NKJV 1 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he became angry. 2 So he prayed to the LORD, and said, "Ah, LORD, was not this what I said when I was still in my country? Therefore I fled previously to Tarshish; for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm. Psalms 105:39 NKJV 39 He spread a cloud for a covering, And fire to give light in the night. Jonah 4:11 NKJV 11 "And should I not pity Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred and twenty thousand persons who cannot discern between their right hand and their left-and much livestock?" Volume 1 Yeshua our Cornerstone www.elshaddaiministries.us4 P a g e

` Acts 4:10-12 NKJV 10 "let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. 11 "This is the 'stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.' 12 "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." Your Notes Neither house of Israel could accept that His message was also for the Gentiles. In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul calls this the Mystery of the Gospel for which he was arrested and, even at the time he wrote the letter, in chains. Ephesians 3:1-6 NKJV 1 For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for you Gentiles-- 2 if indeed you have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which was given to me for you, 3 how that by revelation He made known to me the mystery (as I have briefly written already, 4 by which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ), 5 which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets: 6 that the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, of the same body, and partakers of His promise in Christ through the gospel, Yeshua made the mystery known to Paul that the Gentiles are fellow heirs with the Jews of the promise of salvation. The clues that we would find these details in Jonah s narrative are the sign of Jonah; the certain death situation, being saved out of the situation, and the number three. Seeing these elements in a story are signs that something in that narrative points to Yeshua. Volume 1 Yeshua our Cornerstone www.elshaddaiministries.us5 P a g e
