Acts 2:1-47 The Church begins under the power of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost Holy Spirit poured out on the Day of Pentecost 1 Now when the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Tongues spoken were in the languages of those who had come to investigate the sound 5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. 7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, "Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs--we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God." 12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "Whatever could this mean?" Always Mockers 13 Others mocking said, "They are full of new wine." Peter's explanation Prophecy fulfilled 14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, "Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words. 15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 'And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. 18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy. 19 I will show wonders in heaven above And signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD. 21 And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the LORD Shall be saved.' Confirming Evidence Fulfilling Prophecy 22 "Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know-- 23 Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; 24 whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it. 25 For David says concerning Him: 'I foresaw the LORD always before my face, For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken. 26 Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope. 27 For You will not leave my soul in Hades, Nor will You allow Your

Holy One to see corruption. 28 You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of joy in Your presence.' 29 "Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, 31 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. 33 Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: 'The LORD said to my Lord," Sit at My right hand, 35 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool." ' Conclusion 36 "Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." Guilty Response of the people 37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" Instruction for Salvation 38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call." 40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation." Obedient response of the People Initial growth of the Church 3000 Saved 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. 42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. Miracles done through the Apostles God confirming the message of Salvation 43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. Initial Communal Fellowship of Believers All things in Common 44 Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, 45 and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. 46 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved. NKJV

Facts Revealed: Now when the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. [Acts 2:1-4] Pentecost (Shavuoth) falls fifty days after the Passover, beginning the count on the 15 th day of the first month which is the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the day Israel ate the fruit of the land of Canaan when they first entered the land and the Manna stopped. [Joshua 5:10-12] Jesus was crucified at Passover, rose from the dead on the third day, and appeared for 40 days after His resurrection before His ascension to Heaven. [Acts 1:3] Pentecost would then have fallen about a week after Jesus ascended to Heaven. The Disciples were waiting in the Upper Room in Jerusalem as Jesus had commanded. [Acts 1:4-5, Luke 24:49] They were in one accord in one place. [Acts 1:14, 2:1] The Disciples were not seeking to speak in tongues or any other manifestation of the Spirit, but were only waiting for the power promised by Jesus to be witnesses. The Disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit with the accompaniment of the sound of a mighty wind (without the wind blowing) and tongues of fire visible on the heads of those gathered together. The sound of the mighty wind filled the house and was heard all over Jerusalem attracting a great crowd. [Acts 2:2, 5] The disciples were all "filled with the Holy Spirit" and began speaking in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. [Acts 2:4] The word "Baptized" does not appear in this text, only the term "Filled with the Holy Spirit" which is a common term applied many times before the Day of Pentecost in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. The concept of the disciples being Baptized with the Holy Spirit originated with John the Baptist and was promised by Jesus. [Matthew 3:11, Mark 1:8, Luke 3:16, John 1:33, Acts 1:5, 11:16] There is no text in the Bible that says anyone was "Baptized with the Holy Spirit" indicating a specific event of Baptism in the Holy Spirit, but Peter referred to it as the "Gift of the Holy Spirit." [Acts 2:38] The actual occasion of the Baptism with the Holy Spirit that endued the Disciples with power and understanding happened on the Day of Pentecost, and afterward, as people were "Filled with the Holy Spirit" and did amazing things. [Acts 2:1-4, 19:5] This is just as they had done before the Day of Pentecost throughout the history of Israel, Old Testament and New Testament, including Elizabeth, Zacharias, John the Baptist, Jesus etc. when people were "Filled with the Holy Spirit" and prophesied, healed the sick, raised the dead, and many other supernatural demonstrable results. The purpose of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit was to provide enabling power to carry the message of the Gospel of Salvation around the world as witnesses of Jesus. [Acts 1:8, Luke 24:49] The terms "Baptized with the Holy Spirit" and "Filled with the Holy Spirit" are synonymous. There is therefore no distinction between the two, and no separate occasion between them. The power is from on High and accomplishes anything the Holy Spirit desires of it. [1 Corinthians 12:11] The Holy Spirit is sent by God the Father through Jesus Christ our Messiah.

Previous to the Day of Pentecost, individuals were "Filled with the Holy Spirit." On the Day of Pentecost and afterward, many were "Filled with the Holy Spirit" at one time, just as they had been when the Tabernacle in the Wilderness was constructed. [Exodus 28:3, Acts 2:4] Tongues spoken were in the languages of those who had come to investigate the sound of the wind And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, "Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs--we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God." So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "Whatever could this mean?" [Acts 2:5-12] Those drawn by the sound of the wind were devout Jews and proselytes from every nation around the world. When they arrived at the house from which the sound of the wind was coming, they heard the Disciples speaking in their own language about the wonderful works of God. The message being spoken in tongues was understood by everyone in the crowd in their native tongue no matter what the language. Knowing that the Disciples were all from Galilee with a Galilean accent, it was naturally amazing for them to hear the Galileans speaking in their own native language. Their question was pertaining to the meaning of the amazing occurrence they witnessed. Always Mockers Others mocking said, "They are full of new wine." [Acts 2:13] There are always mockers among those who do not understand. Peter who had denied Jesus before a slave girl, now empowered by the Holy Spirit, boldly proclaims his testimony of Jesus to the face of the people who were responsible for the crucifixion of Jesus. (Power to be My witnesses) [Luke 24:49, Acts 1:8, 4:33] Peter's explanation Prophecy fulfilled Peter stood with the eleven and refuted the mockers claim, of drunkenness, by explaining the occurrence as the fulfillment of Scripture, specifically of Joel. [Acts 2:14-16] 'And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy. I will show wonders in heaven above And signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD. And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the LORD Shall be saved.' [Acts 2:17-21, Joel 2:28-32] Peter's explanation goes beyond the events of the Day of Pentecost and extends to the Great Tribulation prior to the introduction of the Kingdom of Heaven. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit has many applications and times of occurrences. Confirming Evidence Fulfilling Prophecy

"Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know-- Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it. [Acts 2:22-24] The outpouring of the Holy Spirit with signs, is evidence connecting Jesus with the event. God worked many miracles signs and wonders through Jesus in the presence of the people demonstrating God's approval of the message and person of Jesus of Nazareth. The people were witnesses of those very signs, wonders, and miracles and know the truth of what Peter is saying. The crucifixion of Jesus was according to the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God. The hands of Lawless men accomplished the crucifixion. God loosed the pains of death and raised Jesus up from the dead, because it was not possible for Jesus to be held by it. Peter then speaks of David, who had foretold the event saying: 'I foresaw the LORD always before my face, For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken. Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope. For You will not leave my soul in Hades, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of joy in Your presence.' [Acts 2:25-28, Psalm 16:8-11] Expanding on the comparison between David and Jesus, Peter said: "Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. [Acts 2:29-31] This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. [Acts 2:32] Here Peter is giving his eyewitness testimony of the resurrection of Jesus. Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear. [Acts 2:33] The visible signs of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit that you see and hear, are proof positive that Jesus has been received into Heaven, and exalted to the right hand of God Most High, from Whom Jesus received the control of the Holy Spirit, and has poured the Spirit out on the Disciples, and you see the results. For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: 'The LORD said to my Lord," Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool." ' [Acts 2:34-35, Psalm 110:1] This is an interesting quote where Yehowah said to Adoney, "Sit at my right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool." This is very similar to when God calls Jesus God. [Hebrews 1:8-9, Psalm 45:7] Conclusion "Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." [Acts 2:36] Guilty Response of the people under conviction

Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" [Acts 2:37] Instruction for Salvation Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call." [Acts 2:38-39] The answer for the one seeking Salvation is first to Repent (turn away from all sin that offends God) and turn fully to God (commit yourself to live righteous and holy before Him). Obey the commandment of Jesus to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. In the name of Jesus is by the authority of Jesus and at His command. Baptism illustrates a choice of the individual to count Himself dead to his sinful nature, buried with Christ in Baptism, and raised with Christ to live a new life of purity for Christ Jesus Who has cleansed away all your sins. [Romans 6:4] It is a commitment on the part of the individual to set himself apart from evil as he dedicates himself to live wholly for God in righteousness. For those who truly repent, they are promised the gift of the Holy Spirit with all the enablement and power the Holy Spirit brings to work in your life. [Acts 2:38, 1 Corinthians 12:1-30] So you will bear the fruit of the Spirit. [Galatians 5:22, Ephesians 5:9] The Holy Spirit is promised to everyone of all generations whoever the Lord our God will call (this calling is that which draws us to Repentance and faith in Jesus for Salvation). And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation." [Acts 2:40] Obedient response of the People Initial growth of the Church 3000 Saved Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. [Acts 2:41] And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. [Acts 2:42] Miracles done through the Apostles God confirming the message of Salvation Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. [Acts 2:43] The Holy Spirit worked many wonders and signs through the Apostles to confirm their message and doctrine, just as He had through Jesus. [Acts 2:22, 43] Initial Communal Fellowship of Believers All things in Common Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved. [Acts 2:44-47, 4:32-37] Communal living was great at first, but not what God had in mind for the Church, so persecution began to attack the believers to scatter them around the world. [Acts 8:1] Jesus had said, "Go into all the world and preach the Gospel, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, teach them to obey all I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you always until the end. [Matthew 28:19-20, Mark 16:15-16] Jesus wanted them to go around the world with the Gospel, not cluster in Jerusalem.
