North Bedford Church Partnership St. Mark s Church Church of England Methodist Church The Church of England and the Methodist Church in partnership at both St.Mark s and Putnoe Heights Church Consecration of the Chapel and Vestry of St. Mark s Church, Bedford We are pleased to welcome The Right Reverend and Right Honourable the Lord Runcie of Cuddesdon The Reverend Garth Rogers Chairman of the London North West District of the Methodist Church The Reverend Canon Robin Brown Rural Dean of Bedford Monday December 15, 1997 7.30pm

THE ENTRANCE The procession led by the Bishop and Chairman will gather outside the doors of the new chapel. The architect hands the key to the Bishop who strikes the door of the chapel and then opens it. The following words are then said. Bishop: Chairman: Rural Dean: Peace be to this house from God our Heavenly Father Peace be to this house from the Son who is our peace Peace be to this house from the Holy Spirit, the Comforter. We stand to sing our opening hymn. As the hymn is sung the procession will enter the church through the chapel. HYMN Thy hand, O God has guided, thy flock from age to age; the wondrous tale is written, full clear on every page; our fathers owned thy goodness, and we their deeds record; and both of this bear witness: One Church, one Faith, one Lord. Thy heralds brought glad tidings, to greatest as to least; they bade men rise and hasten to share the great King's feast; and this was all their teaching in every deed and word; to all alike proclaiming: One church, one Faith, one Lord Through many a day of darkness, through many a scene of strife, the faithful few fought bravely to guard the nation's life. Their Gospel of redemption, sin pardoned men restored, was all in this enfolded: One Church, one Faith, one Lord. Thy mercy will not fail us, nor leave thy work undone; with thy right hand to help us, the victory shall be won; and then by men and angels, thy name shall be adored, and this shall be their anthem: One Church, one Faith, one Lord

THE WELCOME St. Mark s Church Leadership Team (This team is formed from six members of the church who perform the traditional duties of churchwardens and stewards). Team: All: Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, we welcome you tonight to this place. The Lord be with you And also with you OPENING PRAYER Chairman: Almighty God to whose glory this church stands, we thank you for the many blessings which you have given to those who worship here. Especially we praise you today for the unity and love which is shared between your people who come together from different church backgrounds. We thank you for the vision which has characterised the life of this church enabling it to reach out in faith. Today we give thanks for the generosity of all those who have contributed towards the chapel extension, and for all your grace displayed in the life of this congregation. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. CONFESSION The Chairman will lead us all in saying together When we lose patience when we are unkind when we are envious when we are rude or proud when we are selfish or irritable and when we will not forgive others: have mercy on us, O God. (continued over...)

Help us not to delight in evil, but to rejoice in the truth; help us always to protect, to trust, to hope and to persevere: then shall we see you face to face, and learn to love you as you love us in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Chairman will proclaim God s words of forgiveness, then we sing Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever, Amen. HYMN The children are invited to play their instruments The trumpets sound, the angels sing, the feast is ready to begin; the gates of heaven are open wide, and Jesus welcomes you inside. The trumpets sound, the angels sing, the feast is ready to begin; the gates of heaven are open wide, and Jesus welcomes you inside. Sing with thankfulness songs of pure delight, come and revel in heaven s love and light; take your place at the table of the King, the feast is ready to begin, the feast is ready to begin. Tables are laden with good things, O taste the peace and joy he brings; he ll fill you up with love divine, he ll turn your water into wine. The hungry heart he satisfies, offers the poor his paradise; now hear all heaven and earth applaud, the amazing goodness of the Lord. The procession will now enter the vestry and then assemble in the Chapel. The Petition of Consecration is presented to the Bishop by the churchwardens saying:
