FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT FEBRUARY 18, 2018 PEOPLE OF THE COVENANT If there is one word that stands out in today s readings, it is covenant. God s faithfulness and goodness serve as examples to us of how to live. Genesis tells the story of Noah and of God s covenant not only with all people, but with all of nature. Never will the cleansing waters of the flood bring their destructive power to all the earth again. The sign, the reminder to both God and nature, is the rainbow in the heavens. The psalm reminds us of this compassion of God, and begs God to remember us, not because of our goodness, but because of God s goodness and fidelity to the promise. God shows us how to be good, not by decree, but by example. FAST AND ABSTINENCE Good Friday is a day of fasting. Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are permitted one full meal and two lesser meals per day (which together should not equal one full meal), with no eating between meals. All Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. Catholics who are 14 years or older should abstain from meat entirely. Soups and gravies made from meat are permitted. STATIONS OF THE CROSS Fridays at 6:00pm beginning February 16, February 23, March 2, March 9, March 16, March 23. Fish dinners will be served in the Parish Hall following the Stations. LENTEN PENANCE SERVICE The Lenten Penance Service will be Tuesday, March 13th at 7:00 pm. Several priests will be available for confessions. SACRED PASCHAL TRIDUUM HOLY THURSDAY March 29th - 7:00 pm Mass followed with an hour of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. GOOD FRIDAY March 30th - 3:00 pm - the Reading of the Passion, Adoration of the Cross and Holy Communion. 7:00 pm Stations of the Cross HOLY SATURDAY EASTER VIGIL March 31st 8:00 pm Mass EASTER SUNDAY MASSES April 1st 8:00 am Mass, 10:00 am and 12:00 noon. Easter Sunday Masses are outdoors please bring a chair. Faith and Traditions TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Holy Father usually marks the solemn opening of the Lenten fast with a procession and Mass on Ash Wednesday evening. He walks from the Benedictine monastery, San Anselmo, down the Aventine hill to the Dominican monastery of Santa Sabina. This very old tradition was revived by Pope John XXIII in the late 1950s. Have you ever wondered who gives the pope his ashes? It s the cardinal who has been given the title of the church of Santa Sabina. The pope s homily at this Mass states his theme for Lent. Santa Sabina dates from the fifth century, and is one of the most beautiful churches in Rome. One of the panels on its main doors features the Crucifixion, a scene not normally depicted in art until much later. In the year 1219 the pope gave the church to Saint Dominic for his new religious order, the Order of Preachers, commonly called the Dominicans, and it remains their world headquarters to this day. That pope, Honorius III, was a member of the Savelli family, and this church was their personal family chapel. Sabina was a wealthy Roman lady who became a Christian and was martyred, and whose home became a place of prayer. Later, the church built on that spot was dedicated to her memory. 2

Please contact the parish office, 994-261-3472 if you have moved, changed your phone number or email address, etc. We appreciate your taking the time to notify us thank you. Did you know that the Rite of Confirmation is understood as part of the unity of the Sacraments of Initiation? As such, preparation for and the celebration of Confirmation is the concern and responsibility of the whole parish. This presumes the active involvement, participation, and collaboration of candidates, families, sponsors, pastor, catechists and parish members. Our students have been preparing for Confirmation the last 12 weeks. The immediate preparation, that which is necessary directly prior to the reception of the Sacrament, is done at the parish. One of the elements required is a retreat. Our Confirmation retreat will be held on Saturday, February 24 th on the parish campus. Please keep these students in your ongoing prayers: Athalie, Alec, Anthony, Gavin Brighton, Abby, Amanda, Fiona, Sommer, Nathaniel, Gabi, Hayley, David, William, Vincent, Sarah, Ella, Adam, Megan, Devon, Aiden, Richard and Hunter. TAIZE We invite you to come to Taize this Monday, February 19th beginning at 7:00pm in St. Michael church. During this Lenten season this gives us a time to be closer to our Lord with song, scripture, prayer and reflection time. All are cordially welcome.
