TRINITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH June 30, 2015 Vol. 49 No. 26 20 students and 5 adults traveled to the Methodist Community Center in Cieneguita, Chiriqui last week. The team ministered to the Ngobe people by building homes and leading Vacation Bible school to the many Panamanian children. During the entire month of July, you are invited to Traditional & Contact Worship 8:45 & 11 AM

PERSONAL WORD SUNDAY, JULY 5, 2015 8:45 & 11 AM Sanctuary FULL COMMUNION The 8:45 AM worship service is broadcast via 15-minute delay from 9-10 AM Sundays on WAPI-1070 AM. SERMON Rev. Brian Erickson MUSIC 8:45 & 11:00 AM Scott Brooks MINISTER ON CALL Nathan Carden - 863-0765 8:45 & 11:00 AM WESLEY HALL Rev. Nathan Carden JUNE 28 - ATTENDANCE 1,466 Total Worship Attendance 1,002 Traditional 464 Contact 671 Sunday School Attendance Our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 3:20 On June 7, 1776, the 13 representatives of the colonies met to discuss pursuing independence. When it came to a vote, they voted to secede from England, by the not so overwhelming vote of 7 to 6. Then they commissioned Thomas Jefferson to write up a declaration. John Adams wrote to his wife: The second of July, 1776, will be the most memorial epic in the history of America. You heard me right, the 2nd of July, because that s the day that Jefferson proposed his Declaration. They wanted to present a united front, having all thirteen colonies approve it, but one of them, a stubborn little place called New York, held out for 2 days before signing it, leaving us to celebrate the 4th of July instead of the 2nd. My favorite story is that King George III wrote in his journal on July 4, 1776, Nothing of any importance or consequence took place today. This weekend is a time to honor the land we call home. It is a time to remember those foolish patriots who stood up on our behalf 239 years ago and said, We declare these truths to be so obvious that any human being with any common sense ought to know that they re true. Our barbecues, our trips to the lake, our fireworks, all the ways we celebrate our independence can seem a little silly when you consider how precariously this nation our home came to be. They can feel downright frivolous when you consider the countless sacrifices made by young men and women in uniform; the courage of those who demanded women s suffrage 95 years ago; the fearlessness of those in the civil rights movement all these Americans who seemed to know that these self-evident truths don t preserve themselves. For Christians, the concept of home is even more complex, for we are called to live as citizens of heaven, as aliens in our own homeland. Martin Luther, the great reformer, commented on the passage from Philippians saying, We should walk here as if native there. Christians must avoid making the mistake of thinking our earthly home is the one that matters most. One day all those distinctions that separate us from other Christians will be erased, all those divisions of race and nationality will turn out to mean nothing. Does that mean we don t celebrate our country? Does that mean we don t cherish this land we call home? Absolutely not. We just know, that in the end, our passports read a little differently. We are natives of a different place. We are not from around here, and our lives should reflect that. We walk on earth as if already citizens of God s country. We have over 40 Trinity volunteers signed up to help with our weekly deliveries. We have also had some great discussion and brainstorming amongst our volunteers, like possibly adding fresh produce to the bags in the future (once we get our feet wet). Our first delivery day will be August 21, the Friday of the first full week of school. We will deliver every Friday the schools are in session, and we will be providing larger amounts of food for times like Thanksgiving break. student ministry weekly update www.elementstudentministry.com Here is what is happening at Element this week: LUNCH CLUB TUESDAY This Tuesday from 11:00 2:00 pm we will meet, load up vans, pick up food and return to the church for food and fellowship.
