Youth Work Resources Available for you to borrow from St Albans Diocesan Youth Service & Diocesan Resources Centre

CD/DVD Resources The Skit Guys We've got The Skit Guys "You Teach volumes 1 to 5, as well as "The Skit Guys Live!" & "The Lost Episodes". "You Teach" are an exciting, ready-to-go teaching tool ideal for youth groups. On each DVD there s 7 videos covering different topics of the Christian life. Along with each video there is a message outline and a study guide with in-depth questions, prayer suggestions... and even homework. Nooma NOOMA are a series of short films with a spiritual perspective on individual topics. Each Nooma is approx 10-14 minutes, featuring Rob Bell, and they tackle critical questions of life & faith in a powerful & thought-provoking way. An ideal tool for small group & youth work, & here in the Youth Office we have numbers 1-24 of the Nooma DVDs for youth groups to borrow. 2

Exodus 20 EXODUS 20 is a contemporary drama based on the Ten Commandments, as seen through the eyes of children. Written and directed by Ian Cottage, it boasts some outstanding performances by children who took part. The film reveals the tender and vulnerable time when young people discover their independence. There are two DVDs, one containing a feature-length film entitled EXODUS 20 and a Making of... section, the other containing ten 5-10 minute films, one per commandment and Rob Lacey's Word on the Street performance of the Ten Commandments. The third disc, a CD ROM, contains teachers' resources, lesson plans, work sheets, assessments and lots of other useful ideas, including sixty full-text Bible quotes and links to downloadable songs to support the worksheets. The feature-length film, professionally made using pupils from ten different schools, lasts for 1 hour 6 minutes (which is a pity given that most schools have lessons of an hour or 50 minutes duration). The film skilfully weaves ten stories together featuring the Ten Commandments through issues such as underage drinking, bullying and stealing. No mention is made of the Ten Commandments in the film allowing for interesting discussion afterwards. The second DVD separates out each of the story lines and allows opportunity to focus on one Commandment at a time. The lesson plans and worksheets contained on the CD ROM support the study of individual Commandments and provide interesting and thought-provoking activities. 3

Igniter We have 7 volumes of Igniter DVDs. Each DVD has 5 short videos that ignite, captivate & deepen your experience with God. Includes That s my King - the late S.M. Lockridge once presented an incredible message, describing our God and who He is. Though God can't be described with just words, this is as close as you can get this side of Heaven. Along with the DVD clips, there's leaders information which is a downloadable pdf sheet containing a synopsis, discussion questions, scripture verses and song ideas. We've also got some of the Igniter Backs DVDs, which include stills, loops and countdowns! Igniter Media's vision is to create high quality media that equips people with visual resources that declare Truth & since its inception, they have been committed to creating media that challenges and encourages people to live honest and authentic lives, grounded in Truth. Eating Disorders DVD Urban Saints DVD (in partnership with Anorexia & Bulimia Care), comprising of 3 training programmes, aims to unpack the nature of different eating disorders, why they occur and what action should be taken to help young people work through the problems they face. Dr Kate Middleton, of Anorexia & Bulimia Care, said "Eating disorders are a growing problem that anyone working with young people needs to be aware of. Current statistics suggest that 1 in 10 secondary school students will have 4

some form of eating disorder, and as many as 1/4 of girls admit that they are struggling with their eating. We know that youth leaders are on the front line and are often the first people to find out that someone have a problem." This new training DVD includes interviews with those who have experienced eating disorders first-hand, expert comment from members of the charity Anorexia & Bulimia Care and the experiences of current youth workers as they wrestle with the challenges of eating and dieting in contemporary youth culture. Mentoring DVD Urban Saints DVD at the heart of this resource is a desire to see the re-discovery of a holistic, biblical approach to developing young people; an approach we believe is most effective when used within a mentoring context. The video is divided into four 15-minute sections, featuring interviews with youth leaders, expert opinion, discussion questions and practical advice. An A4 Worksheet has been produced for each of the four sections, designed to help teams to work through and reflect on the issues raised. Totally Wired DVD An Urban Saints resource to help explore the changing nature of the internet and how to keep your children and young people safe when online. Are you sure where your children are, even when they are at home? Are they safe online? How can you understand the ever-changing use of technology and how it affects your young people? In the Totally Wired 5

DVD, we have a resource to help explore the changing nature of the internet and how to keep your children and young people safe when online. Totally wired is a DVD recorded during the 2008 national tour of the same name and it features an evening led by Chris Curtis, from Luton Churches Education Trust. Chris guides the audience through the history of online communication and community, including some hints as to what is to come next. Then the second half of the evening deals with internet safety and the risk of online predators before challenging people to think about how these changes in technology and communication might affect the way we do youth work. Christian Life & Children A resource for small groups to look at the important place of Christian Life and Children (a collaboration between Urban Saints [then Crusaders], CPAS and London School of Theology). There is a growing sense that unchurched children across the United Kingdom are not receiving significant opportunities to hear the Christian message. In response to this issue, Urban Saints and the Church Pastoral Aid Society (CPAS), in partnership with LBC Productions, have produced a pioneering series of training videos & DVDs to promote the vital need for Christians to be thoroughly equipped for effective outreach among children. Christian Life & Children combines high quality Bible teaching (from the London School of Theology) with practical advice from experts in the field of children s work. The material is illustrated with drama, vox pop interviews with children, animation, meditations and testimonies. 6

The content of the six sessions covers these areas: Understanding that we all have a role to play in outreach to children Grasping God s passion for children Understanding the world of the child Recognising how children grow spiritually Becoming healthier families both natural and church families Developing a strategy for effective children's work. Each of the six ready-to-use sessions has three video sections followed by discussion, Bible study and prayer. The pack also includes a leader s guide, participants notes and additional material on a CD-ROM. Books Grove Youth Series The Grove Youth Series offers clear and concise explorations of Christian youth ministry. New titles are published quarterly and include such subjects as: An introduction to managing yourself Thinking Biblically about sex Young People and money Responding to challenging behaviour Reaching and keeping volunteers Empowering Young People in the Church Taking Risks Schools Ministry as Mission. 7

From The National Youth Agency: Icebreakers If you're working with a new group of young people and hoping to get off to a flying start, it's essential to break the ice. This book is a collection of the best ideas and favourite games to get young people motivated and confident. These are ideal for use by anyone working with young people aged between 11 and 16. All the techniques outlined are easy to understand and replicate. The 26 games will soon have your group feeling at ease and interacting more effectively. In addition, several follow-up exercises are described in which larger groups are broken down into smaller ones, encouraging young people to make new friends and not stick to their usual circles. Act Out Act Out! brings you 32 brilliant and easy-to-use exercises that can be put to good use with groups of young people aged between 11 and 16. The ideas outlined in Act Out! are offered as tools for engaging young people to discuss and think through ideas. The book offers examples of good warm up activities, and then helps you take the work to the next stage, examining improvisation, mime and role-play work. Using this book with your group should stimulate ideas and encourage young participants to benefit fully from all aspects of the process. Evaluations & Endings It has been one of the great bugbears of youth work: ''I ve done the work, it seems to have gone well, but how can I evaluate it effectively?' 8

Author and youth worker Vanessa Rogers has plenty of experience in this difficult arena, and here outlines numerous methods to get the best from your evaluation. The book details several successful closing activities to help young people celebrate their achievements, retain ownership and look to the future. It also discusses different types of analysis, both within groups and from individual perspectives. This book will help you to develop methods of constructive feedback that will energise young people and keep them involved. The results will be happier groups and much more meaningful evaluation. From Urban Saints: Easy Games Stacks of easy-to-use games ideas, with illustrations, for use in youth and children's groups. Storyline 'Through the Bible' Teaching resource for use with 11+ 12 sessions that take young people on a journey where they will understand and experience the story of God as revealed in the Bible. Storyline takes an active, hands on, learning-throughexperience approach, enabling young people to encounter and explore themes, feelings and ideas relevant to the material covered in each session. Folder includes a comprehensive leader s guide, handouts to reproduce, a DVD with custom made video clips, CD with music to support some sessions. 9

Studentscape Going to university can be a life-changing experience. Studentscape is a mentoring course, written in partnership with Fusion, that challenges young people to make being a student a university-changing experience too! It has been specifically written for those in or going into higher and further education and is an essential resource for every young person who intends on going to college or university. The resource can be studied each month in the year leading up to university, as a crash course over the summer, or during university itself. Ideally, young people will work through the course with an adult mentor. There are 13 different sessions which look at a range of themes including destiny, work, friendship, lifestyle pressures, spiritual growth, stress and money. Kinetic This pioneering programme aims to develop and release the leadership ability of young people so that they can be used by God to make a difference in their world. The origin of the word 'Kinetic' is the Greek word kinetikos which comes from the word kinein meaning 'to move'. The dictionary tells us that 'Kinetic' is... Characterized by, or causing movement Active as opposed to latent Dynamic, energizing. This is what Kinetic is all about - leadership that creates movement, leadership that is active and leadership that is dynamic and energizing. The course is comprised of 12 interactive sessions that young people work through with an adult mentor. 10

Infusion Infusion is designed to teach teenagers some of the basic foundations that are useful to know when first starting to help as a Christian youth and children s leader. Dealing with Worry Children and young people face increasing pressure today so it's no wonder that many struggle with worry. So how can we help them - and ourselves - experience God s hope and peace in a troubled world? We hope this booklet offers some helpful ideas for you and your youth group to this important issue. From The Good Book Company: Engage The first issue of Engage - daily Bible reading notes for teenagers. This issue looks at Psalms, John, Genesis, Amos, Colossians and Jonah! It also examines questions like has Science disproved Christianity?', what s the bible anyway?' and contains articles on the Trinity and looking after the planet. Engage exists to help you plug into your Bible. Through Engage's pages we want to plunge into God's awesome word: discovering who God is and what He's like; seeing what God's done for us through Jesus; and exploring practical ways of living for Him. The Bible is packed with amazing stories and life-changing teaching. It's time to dive into the Bible and see God change our lives... 11

Don t panic! An exam survival guide including 20 daily Bible readings for stressed-out students. Exams are a time of real stress for many Christian students - with loads resting on the outcome of the results. It's a time when most need the re assurance and guidance that God s Word can give. That's why we ve developed Don't Panic - an exam survival guide. We've written it to encourage young people to keep their eyes fixed on God as they revise for exams. During times of stress it's easy to let God slip down our list of priorities. Bible study and prayer can become optional extras, rather than essential. But these studies will help young people appreciate that through studying God's word, God can encourage us, strengthen us and prepare us to serve Him even when we're studying. It includes 20 daily Bible readings for stressed-out students, revision timetables and practical short articles on revising effectively, exam technique and dealing with stress. Perfect for anyone who will be facing exams his year? From the Diocesan Education Team: Coping with Bereavement The Diocesan Education Team have put together a resource for schools, looking at bereavement. Information includes guidelines for coping with bereavement in the classroom (including what different faiths believe about death), collective worship, stories, poetry and example teaching units. 12
