OFFERTORY Here an offering is received for the work of the Church within and beyond the University. Ushers will begin the collection from the back of the hall forward. Psalm 138 Confitebor tibi chant by James Turle (1802 1882) Sung by the choir I will give thanks unto thee, O Lord, with my whole heart; even before the gods will I sing praise unto thee. I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name, because of thy loving-kindness and truth; for thou hast magnified thy name, and thy word, above all things. When I called upon thee, thou heardest me; and enduedst my soul with much strength. All the kings of the earth shall praise thee, O Lord; for they have heard the words of thy mouth. Yea, they shall sing in the ways of the Lord, that great is the glory of the Lord. For though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly; as for the proud, he beholdeth them afar off. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, yet shalt thou refresh me; thou shalt stretch forth thy hand upon the furiousness of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me. The Lord shall make good his loving-kindness toward me; yea, thy mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever; despise not then the works of thine own hands. DOXOLOGY Sung by the congregation, standing Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heavenly host, Creator, Christ, and Holy Ghost. Amen. 5

FIRST LESSON Amos 8:4 7 Hear this, you that trample on the needy, and bring to ruin the poor of the land, saying, When will the new moon be over so that we may sell grain; and the sabbath, so that we may offer wheat for sale? We will make the ephah small and the shekel great, and practice deceit with false balances, buying the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, and selling the sweepings of the wheat. The Lord has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Surely I will never forget any of their deeds. ANTHEM Jubilate in B-flat major, Op. 10/II (1879) Charles Villiers Stanford O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands: Serve the Lord with gladness, and come before his presence with a song. Be ye sure that the Lord he is God; it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: Be thankful unto him, and speak good of his name. For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting, And his truth endureth from generation to generation. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Psalm 100 with Gloria Patri 6

SECOND LESSON Luke 16:1 13 Then Jesus said to the disciples, There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was squandering his property. So he summoned him and said to him, What is this that I hear about you? Give me an account of your management, because you cannot be my manager any longer. Then the manager said to himself, What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their homes. So, summoning his master s debtors one by one, he asked the first, How much do you owe my master? He answered, A hundred jugs of olive oil. He said to him, Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty. Then he asked another, And how much do you owe? He replied, A hundred containers of wheat. He said to him, Take your bill and make it eighty. And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes. Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much. If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own? No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. 7

HYMN The congregation seated Day by day, dear Lord, of thee three things I pray: to see thee more clear - ly, love thee more dear - ly, fol - low thee more near - ly, day by day. THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD S PRAYER In unison: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Following the Lord s Prayer, the hymn is repeated. 8

ANTHEM Magnificat in D major (1927) Herbert Brewer My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my savior. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm, He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, As he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed, for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Luke 1:46 55 with Gloria Patri SERMON The Loneliness of Truth HYMN Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing (page 12) The congregation standing Nettleton BENEDICTION POSTLUDE Finale from Sonata No. 5 in A major, Op. 159 Quasi una fantasia (1918) Charles Villiers Stanford OUR MISSION The Memorial Church of Harvard University is a space of grace in the center of the Yard, rooted in the good news of Jesus Christ. MUSIC NOTES It is a great pleasure to present the Harvard University Choir of 2016 17, and to welcome its new members. Sir Charles Villiers Stanford studied at Cambridge University, and also in Leipzig and Berlin, where he was a pupil of Carl Reinecke; while in Germany he became an ardent devotee of the music of Johannes Brahms, whose influence is strongly heard throughout Stanford s oeuvre. Stanford later became Professor of Music at Cambridge University and a founding Professor of the Royal College of Music, London, where his pupils would include Vaughan Williams and Howells. The Service in B-flat major, written in 1879 while Stanford was Organist of Trinity College, Cambridge, includes canticles for Matins, Evensong, and an entire Communion Service; the Jubilate is written in Stanford s rich, noble vein, but has contrasting moments of great delicacy. Sir Herbert Brewer began his musical education as a chorister at Gloucester Cathedral and later studied with Stanford at the Royal College of Music in London. In 1897 he returned to Gloucester Cathedral as organist and master of the choristers, and conductor of the Three Choirs Festival; the Magnificat in D was written for the 1927 Three Choirs Festival. On the death of Sir Hubert Parry in 1918 a group of his friends and colleagues contributed to a collection of works in his memory known as the Little Organ Book, from which this morning s prelude is taken. Also composed in 1918 is Stanford s Organ Sonata No. 5, which is based on his famous hymn tune Engelberg.
