3PK January 18-19, 2014 John 2:1-11 First 10 minutes of the service hour: Engage kids in cooperative play activities to help them connect to other kids Next 5 minutes: Connect Time Jesus First Miracle Jesus shows God s power by turning water into wine. Help kids clean up their stuff. Make it fun. Tell them each to pick up 10 items, or act like you re a robot while picking up, or come up with your own creative idea to engage them in clean up. Next 25 minutes: Large Group Last 25 minutes: Snack and Small Group Finish early? Repeat the activity! Kids this age learn through repetition. Or, check out the end of the activities section to find an idea for this week. Remind kids to show their parents the story bag they made today. As you hand out Parent Pages, give each parent/guardian a pack of CDs. One is for their family to enjoy, and one is to help kids invite their friends to come hear God s Story in Kids Club on Super Bowl Weekend. (The insert in the CD explains it more thoroughly.) Jesus was fully man but he was also fully God. That means he could do miracles! Today, we re learning about the very first miracle Jesus did: he turned water into wine at a wedding so people could keep celebrating!

GOAL: Connect time is all about engaging kids in a short, interactive game to prepare them for Large Group. o Clean up! (10 minutes after the service start time, when you get the 5- minute warning from the presenter) o Line Up o As kids are lined up, play a game of Simon Says : Lead the kids in some simple actions: Touch your toes Spin around Clap three times High five a friend Sit on the ground Stand back up Jump twice Etc. whatever you want! But as you finish, move into several calmer moves, like tip-toeing, whispering, freezing perfectly still, etc. Tell kids we re going to hear about Jesus very FIRST miracle. Ask if they know what a miracle is. Tell them this: It s something amazing that only GOD can do. Then say Shhh! and remind kids to stay quiet for Large Group. Tip-toe in together!

Goal: Kids will (1) retell the story of Jesus first miracle and (2) recognize that a miracle is something amazing that only God can do. Why? It s pretty incredible that Jesus first miracle was something as unnecessary as creating more wine for a wedding. Kids may not understand how this story reveals Jesus love for us, but if they know the story well, they can piece it together as they get older. Tip: Write kids names on the story bags ahead of time. *Give kids a snack as you review the story. There are more questions than usual, but they aren t all things kids have to recall. Some are just discussion questions to keep them engaged while they eat. Ask the ones that are most appropriate for your group. REVIEW THE STORY 1. Have you ever gone to a birthday party? What s it like? 2. Who else liked to celebrate and go to parties with his friends and families? (Jesus) 3. Where did Jesus go in today s story? (a wedding) 4. Why were the people who planned the party upset? What did they run out of? (wine) 5. How did Jesus help the people at the party? (he turned water into wine) 6. How did Jesus turn regular water into wine? (We don t know it s a miracle; only God has the power to do miracles!) 7. Why do you think Jesus wanted the people at the wedding to be able to keep celebrating? 8. Does anybody know other miracles Jesus did? (made sick people better; gave food to hungry people, brought dead people back to life, etc.; let kids share any knowledge they have of miracles from the Bible even Old Testament miracles that God did!) ACTIVITY: STORY BAGS Kids are making story bags (brown bag with sticker) to retell the story of Jesus first miracle. Go through the story with kids first, holding up each item as a prop. Then go through it a second time, distributing items as you go. If you have time, review the story a third time and even act it out together! Repetition will help kids remember it. 1. Jesus went to a wedding. a. Jingle the wedding bells. Maybe even hum Here comes the bride for effect. (continue on the following page)

2 2. The bride and groom and everybody else ran out of wine! a. Show kids the empty cup. Turn it upside down and appear distressed at its emptiness. 3. Jesus turned water into wine! a. On the card with the picture of a glass of water, color the liquid red. When you hand cards out to kids, let them color red through the water too. 4. There was enough for all the guests! a. Put on the party hat and celebrate! You could even turn on the Kids Club music for a mini dance party. b. Have kids repeat: Jesus did his first miracle! *Pray together, thanking God that Jesus did miracles and continues to do miracles! Ask the kids if they have any requests to bring before God. AS KIDS ARE CHECKED OUT: Give each kid a packet of CDs (there are 2 in each pack). Tell parents one is for them and one is for them to give to a friend who doesn t come to Kids Club. Each kid s very special job is to give that friend the CD and invite him or her to come with them to the Super Bowl service in two weeks. Extra time? Keep celebrating! Play Freeze Dance and freeze whenever the music stops or whenever a kid yells freeze. Or try playing (Everybody Wins!) Musical Chairs again: Set the chairs up back to back, like a normal game of musical chairs. Then start the music and let the kids start marching. When the music stops, the kids should race to sit in a chair (even though everybody has one).

1 Come early enough to set up today s props! You ll need to duck into a room with a sink or bathroom and add a little water to one of the pitchers before Large Group begins. Preview today s video. It s online at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoy_a L2NVSg. Keep in mind, we re only watching 0:27-3:35. And we re using the word wine instead of juice! BEFORE KIDS COME IN, FILL ONE PITCHER PARTIALLY FULL OF WATER. IN THE EMPTY PITCHER, DUMP ONE PACKET OF KOOL-AID IN THE BOTTOM. SET ASIDE AND PREPARE TO USE AFTER THE VIDEO. Presenter: Hi Friends! Welcome to Kid s Club. I'm and I'm really glad you're here today. Before we get started, I want you to meet my friend HOPS. She s going to remind us of the kind of choices we can make today in Kids Club. Video: HOPS 4 Share With Others (about 1 minute) Wow, I love sharing. One way we can share is by inviting our friends to come to Kids Club with us. Today, you re going to get something special to help you do that. Can I see a big thumbs up from everybody who s ready to share? (Let kids respond.) Great job! Now I think we re ready to hear God s story. REVIEW THE BEGINNING OF GOD S STORY Presenter: (holding up the Bible for kids to see) This is where we can read about God s story. Out of all the stories in the world, this story is the most important. It s God s Rescue plan. Remember how God made the whole world and everything was good? The world was perfect! Give me a smile! (Let kids respond. Then change your tone.) But THEN, something bad happened. A snake tricked the first two people, Adam and Eve, into thinking they didn t need to trust or obey God. So Adam and Eve disobeyed God, and sadness and death came into the world Show me your sad face. (Let kids respond.) This was really sad. But even though Adam and Eve disobeyed God God loved them anyway! And he planned a great rescue so that Adam and Eve and you and me can be close to God again. We ve been talking about that KING and Rescuer. His name is.(let kids say: Jesus!) Yes, Jesus!

JESUS GOES TO A WEDDING And we ve talked about how Jesus was a kid just like us! He did all sorts of things like play with toys and eat his dinner and probably even get ouchies sometimes when he fell down! He also celebrated with his family and friends. Raise your hand if you ve ever been to a birthday party or maybe a party for Christmas or Thanksgiving (let kids respond). Guess what? Jesus went to birthday parties and celebrations too! In fact, today, we re going to hear a story about a time Jesus went to a wedding. JESUS DOES HIS FIRST MIRACLE At this wedding, Jesus did something called a miracle. Can you guys say miracle? (Let kids say: Miracle.) Great job! A miracle is something only GOD can do. And since Jesus was God s Son, he did many miracles. Today, we re going to find out what his first miracle was! Let s watch a video to find out what it was. See if you can figure out what amazing thing Jesus did at the wedding: Video: Jesus Turns Water Into Wine *This video calls the wine juice. Please refer to it as wine when you talk about it, because that is the biblically accurate description. Wow, so Jesus showed his power by doing his very first miracle! (pick up the pitcher) He took regular old water.and he turned it into what? (Let kids say: juice/wine!) Yes, he turned into a type of juice for grown-ups, called wine. (Pour it into the second pitcher, the one with the koolaid packet dumped on the bottom.) Then everybody could keep on celebrating because Jesus likes it when we celebrate with our family and friends! ONLY GOD CAN DO MIRACLES I used some kool-aid to make this water turn colors. But Jesus took plain old water, didn t use anything, and it became wine! It s hard to even imagine how that happened, isn t it? That s because only GOD has the power to turn water into a completely different drink! Everybody say, It s a miracle! (Let kids say it.) That s right! And hold up one finger, because this was Jesus FIRST miracle! (Let kids hold up one finger.) After that, he started doing a lot more miracles, like helping sick people feel better and feeding people who were hungry and even making dead people come back to life. And guess what? Jesus can still do miracles today for you and me! Pretty cool, huh? Let s pray together and thank God for doing miracles! Pray: Hi God! Thanks for sending Jesus! Thank you for turning water into wine. Thank you for doing miracles. We love you. A-MEN. WORSHIP Now stand up and we ll sing some songs to God together to worship him! Song: King of the Jungle

Song: Come With Me Dismiss kids to small groups. (Be creative as you dismiss them. Ask them to come give you a high five first, or maybe tiptoe or hop--like Hops--to their groups.) *AFTERWARDS, PLEASE DUMP OUT BOTH PITCHERS
