in literature and riting in correspondence ith Sir Walter Scott Robert Southey and others but devoted most o his time to the study o theology Ordained in 1807 Heber as appointed by his older brother to the church at Hodnet his amily living In Hodnet Heber rote his hymns Heber made congregational singing a priority An Anglican ith impeccable theological and social credentials he helped make congregational song respectable in the Anglican Church Dismayed by the quality and apparent irrelevance o psalm singing to the sermon and liturgy he began riting and collecting hymns ith the goal o preparing a hymnal organized around the Church o England s Church Year He sought (unsuccessully) oicial sanction or a collection o hymns Heber held strong opinions about the language o hymns obecting vehemently to addressing God ith ditties o embraces and passion or in language hich it ould be disgraceul in an earthly sovereign to endure His groing corpus o hymns modeled his conviction that such expressions ere alays proane Meanhile Heber s many abilities brought him Church preerment In 182 he as named Bishop o Calcutta a urisdiction hich then stretched as ar as Ne Zealand In the midst o a grueling but rearding schedule Heber continued to rite hymns and to ork on a hymnal Holy Holy Holy as irst published in 1826 the year o Heber s premature death in A Selection o Psalms and Hymns or the Parish Church o Banbury The hymn appeared again in Heber s posthumous collection Hymns Written and Adapted to the Weekly Church Service o the Year (1827) It has been sung in the United States at least since 1850 hen it as included in Cantica Laudis or The American Book o Church Music Since the publication o the irst edition o Hymns Ancient and Modern in 1861 the text Holy Holy Holy has consistently been set to the tune NICAEA Composed by John Bacchus Dykes a child prodigy ho at the age o ten became the organist at his ather s parish church in Kingston upon Hull NICAEA as ritten especially or
