Psalm 23 - The Secret of Satisfaction Introduction: A. Reading an article in Outreach to Muslims the author notes that while he was reading a Newsweek Magazine that he came across a poll that alleges that Americans are 67% unhappy. 1. He then lists 13 items that seem to indicate that we ought to be the happiest of people and yet still 67% are unhappy. B. The question I want to ask of you today - are you a Happy Christian? 1. Are you satisfied with what you have, or are you one of the 67% of Americans that can only look at what they don t have - but forget to count their blessings of the things that God has given to us on a daily basis. C. In today s lesson I want to focus on a secret - that is the secret of satisfaction that truly we as Christians all need on our daily walk with Christ. 1. Please turn you bible to Psalm 23 for this will be the entire context of this lesson. D. Most look for satisfaction in the wrong things 1. The more they try to satisfy their WANTS the more dissatisfied they become 2. There is but one way that a person can find true satisfaction in life - 3. The idea is, that the wants of the soul are met and satisfied, and that, in the full enjoyment of this, there is the conviction of abundance - the repose of the soul at present satisfied, and feeling that in such abundance want will always be unknown. - Barnes III. If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine and go to the mountains to seek the one that is straying?13 And if he should find it, assuredly, I say to you, he rejoices more over that sheep than over the ninetynine that did not go astray. 3. 1 Peter 1:22-23 - Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart,23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever, 4. 1 Peter 2:25 - For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. You prepare a table before me The Lord provides sustenance for our souls John 6:44-51; 8:51; 1 Pet 2:1; Heb 5:12,13 B. in the presence of my enemies God provides for us in spite of what others may do to destroy us 1 Pet. 4:12-19 1. 1 Peter 4:12-19 - Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you;13 but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.14 If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified.15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people s matters.16 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.17 For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 Now If the righteous one is scarcely saved, Where will the ungodly and the sinner appear? 19 Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator. C. You anoint my head with oil indicative of the divine favor and encouragement Matt. 10:22; Luke 21:16-19; 2 Cor. 12:9,10 1. Matthew 10:22 - And you will be hated by all for My name s sake. To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen! C. And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever (Lit. To length of days) 1. The expression... does not refer to eternity or to heaven, but it is parallel with the former expression All the days of my life Barnes 2. A statement of commitment Psa. 27:4; 26:8; Josh. 24:15; a.
