Divine Mercy Sunday by Father Michael The Second Sunday of Easter has taken on the name of Divine Mercy Sunday. This was brought about through the revelations of the Lord made to Sr. Faustina, who lived in Poland in the early 1900 s. She was canonized by Pope St. John Paul in 2000. The message she received urges believers to seek the mercy of God. The more we are able to trust in His kindness, through reconciliation and prayer, the more we are strengthened in His love. We pray that the joy and life of this Easter season will continue to bring hope to all God s children. Holy Week and Easter were beautiful days here at Holy Cross. One of the great privileges of priesthood is being able to help people encounter God in the journey of their life. There is no sure-fire formula which guarantees that someone is going to have a holy moment. But, there is something humbling in leading prayer that creates that possibility. I am so grateful to the many helping hands that bring about these holy days. There are many parishioners who share in the work of bringing the great mysteries of our faith to life. We had members of the Youth Group as well as Level 7 students from our Religious Education program assisting. Our music ministry and liturgical ministers were out in full force. And, so many other people assisted in various ways through the week. Thank you one and all. There was a great spirit throughout the days of Holy Week. On Easter Sunday, the enthusiasm and energy were overflowing. The gorgeous warmth of spring certainly added to the spirit of the day. All four Masses were packed. It was an uplifting day for me personally, and I pray that it was a rich day for all who were here. A few weeks ago I asked if anyone knew of an organization or person who could assist me with trying to get help for my Mom in securing Veteran benefits. The response was overwhelming. Thank you to all those who responded. I received over two dozen references and suggestions where to seek assistance. It is a daunting task, but I am trying to plow through what needs to get done. It is unfortunate that it is such a bureaucratic obstacle course to seek help for those who have served our nation. Monday morning I leave on the parish trip. This year I entitled our adventure the Southern Swing. We will be driving south, spending time in Myrtle Beach, Charleston and Savannah. We fly home from Georgia. I am looking forward to sharing this adventure with 45 parishioners. These will all be new places for me, and I am confident we will have a great time. I am grateful to Fr. Frank Eisele, Msgr. Jim Vlaun and Msgr. Joe Curley for covering Masses while I am away. Continue to pray for peace and that the spirit of wisdom will lead and guide our world leaders. SAVE THE DATE! All ADULT volunteer ministers are invited to a barbeque on Sunday, June 4, 2017 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM in our courtyard. More information in next week s bulletin! 3

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Welcome to Holy Cross Religious Education The Religious Education Office is planning ahead to the 2017-2018 Formation Year. We need your help so that we can adequately plan to meet the needs of our parish. If you have a child entering First Grade in September you need to register. If you have recently moved to our parish you need to register in the parish. Our program is home based. Classes do not take place at the Church; rather they are held in the homes of our Catechists. Because of this, there are geographical limits on who we are able to accommodate. Please contact our office for more specific information. First time registration needs to be done in person at our office. Registration needs to be completed by June 16, 2017. Office Hours: Monday Friday 9:00-12:00 & 1:00-4:00 If your child was not baptized at Holy Cross you need to bring a copy of your child s Baptism Certificate. For those who are already part of our program, you need to re-register for the upcoming year. Materials will be sent to your home by the end of April and they may be returned by mail. Please note the deadline of June 16, 2017. A detailed outline of our program is available on-line or at our office. But, there are a few important details to be noted. Children must successfully complete each grade level to proceed to the next. The Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation require a minimum of two years of preparation. Most importantly, we need to work together. Faithful attendance at classes and parent workshops is essential. As comprehensive and informative as our program is, this is only one part of your child s faith formation. The greatest thing you can do to nurture your faith and the faith of your child is to regularly be part of our Sunday Eucharist. The Catechism of the Church states that parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children. We are privileged to work with you in this task. We thank you for your cooperation in allowing us to be part of your lives. We look forward to a fruitful year where everyone, young and old, continues to grow in understanding the gift of our faith. 5

CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL For the elderly on Long Island, Meals-on-Wheels is a lifesaver. Every weekday, the program delivers hot, nutritious meals to seniors who are homebound in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Meals-on-Wheels case managers can also assist these clients in accessing other services they might need. I knew something was wrong as soon as I saw him, explains Steve, a driver for Catholic Charities Meals-on-Wheels. Steve had been delivering meals to Ed for several years and upon arriving that fateful day, immediately observed that he seemed disoriented. Steve knew Ed was diabetic, so he checked his blood sugar and saw that it was low. He poured him some orange juice but sensed there was something more serious going on. I kept asking him to let me call 911 but he resisted. I couldn t accept that so I just casually stuck around, making my case. He finally admitted that he didn t have anyone to care for his dog if he was hospitalized, so I promised I would, and that s when he gave me the green light to call. It was a good thing, too. At the hospital Ed was diagnosed with a serious blood infection that kept him there for nearly four months. In the meantime, Steve cared for the dog until Ed s sister arrived from out of town. Your gifts to the Catholic Ministries Appeal support so many programs that help us to serve our seniors and others who come to us for help each day. Please consider donating to the Appeal and making a difference in the lives of others.
