The area consisted of loosely formed local clans or tribal states moving towards centralization. By 1839, the slave trade was intensely destructive and there were conflicts between northern and southern tribes. In 1859 the Scottish missionary David Livingstone explored and reported on the area. He believed in promoting Christianity, Commerce and Colonization. His research ultimately helped to end the slave trade. In 1907 a Colonial government was set up under the rule of the British Central African protectorate and the country was named NyasaIand. It was heavily populated and the least developed of the East African nations. 1943 saw the growth of Nationalism in the formation of the Nyasaland African Congress. In 1959 there were riots for Independence. 1964 Malawi was granted Independence with the first president Dr. Hastings Banda, local born in Kasungu, educated in America and previously having worked in Liverpool. Banda, a Catholic was President for 33 years until 1994 when he was voted out of office during the first free elections. The new president was Bakili Muluzi, a Muslim with two wives. He was president until 2004 when the country elected Bingu wa Mutharika who died in office in 2012. The new president was the first woman president, the vice president Joyce Banda. In 2014 they held the first Tripartite election. (cont d) next week... PAGE 3
