Christ Church on Capitol Square Choral Evensong According to the 1662 Book of Common Prayer Sunday, June 3, 2018 5 p.m. Second Sunday after Pentecost Choristers & Lay Clerks 1

Welcome to Choral Evensong. We hope that you will enter into a time of prayer by letting the voices of the Choir lift your thoughts and prayers to the throne of God s grace. While the Choir will pray most of the responses and canticles on your behalf, you are invited to participate heartily in the singing of the hymns. Please silence electronic devices. Sit Voluntary: Psalm Prelude, Set 1, No. 2 Herbert Howells Psalm 37:11 But the meek-spirited shall possess the earth and shall be refreshed in the multitude of peace. Sit Introit: Eternal Light Leo Sowerby Stand God is love Hymn 379 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Psalm li. 9 DEARLY beloved people of God, the Scripture moveth us, in sundry places, to acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness; and that we should not dissemble nor cloak them before the face of Almighty God our heavenly Father; but confess them with an humble, lowly, penitent, and obedient heart; to the end that we may obtain forgiveness of the same, by his infinite goodness and mercy. And although we ought, at all times, humbly to acknowledge our sins before God; yet ought we chiefly so to do, when we assemble and meet together to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his most holy Word, and to ask those things which are requisite and necessary, as well for the body as the soul. Wherefore I pray and beseech you, as many as are here present, to accompany me with a pure heart, and humble voice, unto the throne of the heavenly grace, saying after me; 2 Kneel or Stand A general Confession to be said of the whole Congregation after the Minister, all kneeling. ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father; We have erred, and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou them, O God, who confess their faults. Restore thou those who are penitent; According to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesu our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober

life, To the glory of thy holy Name. Amen. ALMIGHTY God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who desireth not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness, and live; and hath given power, and commandment, to his Ministers, to declare and pronounce to his people, being penitent, the Absolution and Remission of their sins : He pardoneth and absolveth all them that truly repent, and unfeignedly believe his holy Gospel. Wherefore let us beseech him to grant us true repentance, and his Holy Spirit, that those things may please him, which we do at this present; and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure, and holy; so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Preces and Responses Philip Radcliffe Officiant: Choir: Officiant: Choir: Officiant: Choir: O Lord, open thou our lips. And our mouth shall show forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord s name be praised. 3

Sit The Psalm: Psalm 81 Edward Bairstow in E-flat 1 Sing we merrily unto God our strength make a cheerful noise unto the God of Jacob. 2 Take the psalm, bring hither the tabret the merry harp with the lute. 3 Blow up the trumpet in the new-moon even in the time appointed, and upon our solemn feast-day. 4 For this was made a statute for Israel and a law of the God of Jacob. 5 This he ordained in Joseph for a testimony when he came out of the land of Egypt, and had heard a strange language. 6 I eased his shoulder from the burden and his hands were delivered from making the pots. 7 Thou calledst upon me in troubles, and I delivered thee and heard thee what time as the storm fell upon thee. 8 I proved thee also at the waters of strife. 9 Hear, O my people, and I will assure thee, O Israel if thou wilt hearken unto me, 10 There shall no strange god be in thee neither shall thou worship any other god. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Sit The First Lesson: Deuteronomy 5:12-15 Observe the sabbath day and keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work you, or your son or your daughter, or your male or female slave, or your ox or your donkey, or any of your livestock, or the resident alien in your towns, so that your male and female slave may rest as well as you. Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the sabbath day. Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. 4

Kneel or Stand Magnificat Herbert Howells This is the song of Mary when she was told that she was to be the mother of Christ; forming a bridge between the two lessons. My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 5

Sit The New Testament: 2 Corinthians 4:5-12 We do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus sake. For it is the God who said, Let light shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies. For while we live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus sake, so that the life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. 6

Kneel or Stand Nunc Dimittis Herbert Howells Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; for my eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people. To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Apostles Creed Intoned by all, please stand. I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Kneel or Stand The Prayers (Sung by the Choir) Officiant: The Lord be with you. Choir: And with thy spirit. Officiant: Let us pray. Choir: Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. The Lord s Prayer is intoned by all. Philip Radcliffe 7

Suffrages (Prayers sung responsorially by the Choir and Officiant) V. O Lord, show thy mercy upon us. R. And grant us thy salvation. V. O Lord, save the state. R. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. V. Endue the ministers with righteousness. R. And make thy chosen people joyful. V. O Lord, save thy people. R. And bless thine inheritance. V. Give peace in our time, O Lord. R. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. V. O God, make clean our hearts within us. R. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. The Collects Collects are intoned by the Officiant; the Choir responds by singing Amen. Collect for the Day O God, who hast prepared for those who love thee such good things as pass man s understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards thee, that we, loving thee in all things and above all things, may obtain thy promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen. Collect for Church Musicians and Artists O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. 8 Collect for Aid against Perils Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Sit Offertory Anthem Phos Hilaron David Jernigan This anthem was composed in honor of our Rector The Rev. James P. Adams. The Phos Hilaron is a Greek prayer, written in the third-century. It is thought to be the oldest non-biblical prayer in Christian history. 1. O gracious Light, pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven. O Jesus, Christ, holy and blessed! 2. Now as we come to the setting of the sun, and our eyes behold the vesper light, we sing thy praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 3. Thou art worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices, O Son of God, O Giver of life, and to be glorified through all the worlds. Stand The General Thanksgiving Said by all. Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all people. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. 9

Confirmation is your turn to prepare and renew or strengthen your beliefs. In Confirmation we ask for God s help in our relationship with God and with the Church. There is not a set time in life to be confirmed. Everyone must answer for themselves I do, I Believe, and I will with God s Help. Your church and family provide the support, but it is your decision. We begin to offer confirmation as a class for students during their 8th grade year; however, you can be confirmed at other ages as well. Confirmation registration and information is on the Christ Church website under the youth page. For any questions, please contact Liz Stroff, lstroff@ccral.org.
