Frazeysburg United Methodist Church Open hearts, Open minds, Open doors. From the Pastor... Rehabilitation and Restoration Rehab is a word that can have many meanings and many connotations. It can mean therapy, recuperation, or recovery. It might be applied to a health condition, an occupation, drug addiction or home improvement. In general, rehabilitate means to restore; as close to the previous condition as possible. Quite often rehabilitation does not result in 100% recovery, but it is an improvement. The annual observance of Lenten discipline among Christians is a time to seek restoration of our lives; both physically and spiritually. A time to reflect, take stock and re-evaluate ourselves. We remember our baptismal covenant through the imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday. We recall that we are asked to renounce the forces of wickedness and reject the evil powers of this world and repent of our sin. We again accept the freedom and power that God gives us to resist evil, injustice and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves. We again confess that Jesus Christ is our Savior; we put our whole trust in his grace, and promise to serve him as our Lord, As we think about our Christian responsibilities and contemplate our duties to Christ our Lord, even the spiritually mature among us are aware of how out of step we are with where we should be. We all have work to do. This is not an insult but a spiritual truth given to us by the Holy Scriptures. There is much to explore, to learn, and to benefit in doing this work. As we become aware of the degree to which we need intervention and rehabilitative help beyond what we can provide to ourselves, we encounter the specifics of what can move us forward, if we stick with it and don t give up. We go beyond ourselves and help others coming to Christ for the first time, as well as others who are returning to Christ and the fellowship of the church after a period of absence or neglect. We remember with grateful hope the promise of healing and wholeness that awaits us as we continue to persevere, even in the face of challenging circumstances. It is with that sense of gratitude and hope that we enter Holy Week and continue on to Resurrection Sunday. All of this is to prepare us to walk through this final part of the journey with Christ and his church through his suffering, death, burial and finally his resurrection.
