Letter from Martin Dear Friends, Have you decided how you will keep Lent? Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, is on 14 th February which is also St Valentine s day. On that day when cards of love are sent, let s remember that we each have been given a Valentine of love from God that is, Jesus! Jesus is the proof of God s love for us and who values us so much that he gave up his life for us on the cross (see Romans 5.8). If that love has an effect on you then Lent is a time to respond again to God and grow through his love. This Lent I invite you to come to our Ash Wednesday Joint Communion at St Hilda s at 7.30 pm when we can re-dedicate our lives to Christ who gives himself to us through bread and wine. I also invite you to New Hope United Reformed Church on Warley Road for the Churches Together Lent course which begins on Tuesday 20 th February at 7.30 pm. The theme is Lay Ministry, a theme through which we can hopefully listen again to what Christ is calling us to be and do at this point in our lives. Madeleine and I will lead the first session which will continue on Tuesday evenings at New Hope until 20 th March. Lent is also a good time to do some reading that can help us on our Christian journey. At St Hilda s I shall display a variety of accessible books (different from last year s) which I can strongly recommend. Among them you will find some little books by Rowan Williams (former Archbishop of Canterbury) Finding God in Mark, Finding God in Paul, Discipleship which I commend as especially fresh and helpful. We are commanded to love God with our minds and a good way to do that is by reading. So do borrow a book; they are available to St John s people as well as St Hilda s. Lent is sometimes called the springtime of the soul, a time when new life can grow in us. As we begin to see the green shoots of daffodils and crocuses on the Moor, let s do what we can to encourage new growth on our Christian journey. May God bless you all, Martin 3

Morning Prayer Saying the Office 8.30am every Tuesday in Church Treasurer s Report to PCC 23 rd January 2018 The accounts are as expected for 2017. We managed to make a final payment towards the parish share of 5053.30 which has left a shortfall for the year of 7027.70 which given the size of the congregation and all the other expenses we have had to pay is an amazing achievement. We paid 975 each to our chosen organisations which were: Christians In Calderdale Schools Ebenezer Food and Support Drop-in Church Urban Fund Bible Society. We also sent cheques for 192.18 to the Children s Society, which is the total raised at our Christingle service. 140.52 to the Toybox appeal, which is what was raised by donations in lieu of Christmas cards. 6
