Heartbeat INDIAN HILLS COMMUNITY CHURCH April 8, 2018 Welcome dear ones. We are glad you re here with us today to worship the one true God. Our ministry philosophy is to teach God s Word systematically, or verse by verse, that each of us may understand it and apply it to our lives. This style of studying the Bible may be different for you in the beginning, but in a few weeks it will become very exciting! Satan s Lie The chorus of a popular country song by Luke Bryan says, I believe most people are good. Millions of people gave Luke s song a nod and are singing along, not realizing how wrong that phrase is. Much of the media promotes this lie from the devil. They are convinced that man s nature is basically good. Sadly, much of the world also agrees with this sentiment. However, Jeremiah 17:9 says, The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it? People don t like to hear about sin. To them it is an archaic concept. However, it is against the backdrop of our sin that we see God s overwhelming love for us. Oh, the deep, deep love of Jesus! Sin is an abomination to God. It defiles our purity, destroys our integrity and ruins our lives. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). Those are amazing words: while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Jesus bought us with His blood. He redeemed us and brought us into His family. We are His forevermore. Dear one, if you have not yet come to the Lord, examine yourself today. Don t be fooled by the world s sentiments. Turn from your sin and come to Christ today. Dessert Social Plan to attend the social this evening, immediately following Sunday Night Church. Proceeds go toward Boys of Faith Camp. Have a good week! Heartbeat 3

Diligent Intake of the Word Curt Kuster Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15). Most are aware that on Wednesday evenings many children attend the AWANA program. Do you know from where the name AWANA comes? It is an acronym from our text verse: Approved Workman Are Not Ashamed. The immediate context emphasizes the workman is to be aware of false teachers and false teaching. We are to be diligent in reading, studying, and practicing God s Word in order to accurately handle the word of truth. Being disciplined to do this takes work. This is necessary to avoid the doctrinal errors of which Paul is warning. However, being an approved workman involves more. First Corinthians 6:20 says, You have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body. This could be considered a summary statement of the Christian life. We have been bought with a price we are redeemed. Christ s death on our behalf has purchased our salvation. After placing our faith in Him for salvation, what should be our response? It is to glorify God 4 Heartbeat Curt Kuster in our body in all that we do. We are saved by grace through faith (see Ephesians 2:8-9), however the next verse states, we are created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand. Since Christ is now our Master (He bought us), we are to diligently serve Him. That certainly is by accurately handling the word of truth, but also in our day-to-day service being a good workman. We are approved by God for salvation by faith in the finished work of Christ on the cross on our behalf we have been accepted by God through Christ. Romans 8:1 states there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. However, Romans 14 tells us we will all stand before the judgment seat of God, and each one of us

will give an account of himself to God. Dr. Henry Morris, in his book Creation and the Second Coming, states this well. This will not be a judgment for salvation, nor to decide a penalty for our sins, for the Judge Himself long ago paid for all our sins on the cross, and has saved us eternally, a gift received entirely by grace through faith. This is a judgment for rewards, For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:10a), where the fire itself will test the quality of each man s work. If any man s work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward. If any man s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire (1 Corinthians 3:13-15). When we give this account, we do not want to be ashamed, but rather we want to hear well done, good and faithful slave (Matthew 25:21). Speaking at Businessmen s Lunch Tim Pratt Tim Pratt was two years old when his parents divorced. He learned to entertain himself and had many interests since his mother, being a single parent, had to work a lot of hours to pay the rent and keep food in the refrigerator. I grew up without much thought of God, Tim said. When I was little I attended the Methodist Church, but went mostly for the crafts and was bored with the teaching. As Tim got older he started playing in bands. A rock and roller at heart, Tim loved the musician s life and wanted to make a living at it. At different times in his career he came close as his band opened for some famous/classic groups, but they never quite crossed the threshold to big time. The singer/song writer in Tim didn t want to quit the rock and roll scene, but the practical side of him thought it was important to pay for insurance, groceries, and rent. He compromised and got a job at Brandeis selling suits. He could keep his band together and still afford gas in his car. Providentially, a cute girl with brown hair also worked at Brandeis. Tim and Shelley were married in 1988. A couple years into their marriage, Shelley turned 6 Heartbeat by Gale Engle from her sins and believed Jesus died for her. She was born from above and immediately began growing more like Christ. Tim and Shelley Pratt Shelley brought me to church for everything, Tim said. I listened and sometimes I would get convicted. The people seemed nice, but when the service was over I wanted to run for the door. God was drawing Tim to Himself. I heard the gospel from my wife, at church, and even from some of my customers. By then, Tim was working at Dietz Music, where Greg Thomas and Phil Boehr were frequent customers. It wasn t long before I realized that God had surrounded me with believers. After a night out playing with the band and everything that

goes with that, Tim was driving to Omaha the next day when the scales fell from his eyes. Suddenly I was overwhelmed with my own personal sinfulness and the knowledge that God s Son had died on the cross to pay my sin penalty. I turned from my sins and believed Jesus died for me. I asked God to forgive me and He did. Tim was a new creature in Christ. I came home that night and told Shelley what had happened, Tim said. God started working on me right away and He continues to this day. One of the biggest blessings in our lives has been working with the high school kids, Tim said. We love them so much and want to keep them in our lives. It s hard to put into words just how we feel about them, and it s a blessing to watch them grow in the Lord. Besides being a high school sponsor, Tim teaches a Tuesday night Mansion Builders Bible study and oversees the high school music. Tim will be speaking at the Businessmen s Lunch at Valentino s on Friday, April 20 at noon. All men, high school age and older are welcome. The cost is $8, but guests eat for free. Invitations are available at the main entrances. Heartbeat 7
