Duke University Chapel Service of Worship Fifth Sunday after Pentecost July 1, 2012 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God Christ Healing the Woman With an Issue of Blood, by William Blake, c. 1803-05. Purity is both an abiding theme and anxiety in culture and religion. Jesus profoundy reshapes our notions of purity. For him, purity comes not from avoiding guilt, dirt, or shame but from receiving forgiveness and healing. Our gospel from Mark 5 describes two women facing ritual impurities of death and menstruation; both find a deeper holiness in Jesus. Paul s words in 2 Corinthians focus on purity of motives.

At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel located to the left of the chancel. Immediately following the Lord s Supper, a service of prayer for healing will be held. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness, with anointing and laying on of hands. All are invited. The congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. Thanksgiving This morning we give thanks for the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). We celebrate its dedication to serving the Duke student community through deep care for students struggling with various forms of brokenness, and for helping students find wholeness and healing in mind, body, and spirit. A representative brings a CAPS brochure to the altar. In Durham, we remember elected officials and public leaders who work on behalf of the city. The ushers bring forward an emblem of the City of Durham. *Prayer of Thanksgiving *The Lord s Prayer (number 895 in the hymnal, in unison) Sending Forth *Benediction *Recessional Hymn 427 Where Cross the Crowded Ways of Life Postlude Prelude in G, BWV 541/1 *All who are able may stand. germany Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) Presiding Minister Preacher Lectors Guest Choir Guest Organist Ministry of Worship Presiding Minister over Memorial Chapel Communion Head Ushers The Rev.
