TOPIC 9: TO GAIN KNOWLEDGE: For any community to survive and go forward in this world, the people of that community have to have knowledge. To gain knowledge is not only to learn like a parrot, but to understand and act upon what you have learnt. Then to teach it to others, so they may benefit from it as well. The Holy Prophet (S) has said that every Muslim man and woman must gain knowledge. Once when the Holy Prophet (S) entered the Mosque there were two groups of people sitting there. One of the groups was busy praying while the other group were discussing religious topics. The Holy Prophet (S) was very pleased and said that both the groups were doing something good but he preferred the group that was busy discussing. Saying that, he went and joined that group. The above incident does not mean that prayer is not important, as the Holy Prophet (S) was pleased with both groups. The group that were Praying, were offering Mustahab prayers not Wajib. The knowledge that we have to gain should be religious and academic. It is possible to do both, as Allah has made us He knows what we are capable of. If your knowledge in religion increases you will became closer to Allah because you will understand a lot more of what you are doing and why. We are told that if two people are offering the same prayer, one with understanding and the other without; then the one with understanding will get more Thawaab. On the day of Qiyamat if you are questioned about something wrong that you had done in your life, you will not be able to say you did not know! You have no excuse. There are so many books you can read, and so many people you can ask. Akhlaq Page 4.22 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 13: MANNERS OF TRAVELLING: One of the many blessings of Allah to Prophet Sulaiman was that he had control over the wind. He would sit on his carpet and command the wind to take him wherever he wanted to go Once when Prophet Sulaiman on his carpet was floating through the air being carried by the wind, a pious man saw him and said "Glory be to He, who has subjected this to Sulaiman." Allah liked this praise so much that he sent an angel to Prophet Sulaiman telling him that a certain person had praised Him in such a beautiful manner and pleased Him greatly. Prophet Sulaiman turned back and went to the man to ask him what he had said, and the man told him. Allah says in the Holy Qur'an, ".Glory be to Him who subjected these to us, because we were not able to do so ourselves." The above Ayat tells us that Glory belongs to Him who has allowed for us to have power over certain things and without this blessing we would not be able to. This is why it is recommended to say this Ayat before travelling, as it is due to the blessings of Allah that we have such wonderful means of travel. Other things recommended to do before travelling are: - Take out Sadqa - Walk under the Qur'an as you are leaving you house. - Carry ½ of Sura Ikhlas, with the other half left at home (We are told that these two halves will come together again). - Recite the above ayat from the Holy Qur'an When we go on a journey, we usually take with us something called Imam Zaamin which is some money tied in a cloth. This tradition probably started during the time of our 8 th Imam, Imam Ali Ar- Ridha (A), when people wanted to carry the coins because it had the Imam s name on it. Akhlaq Page 4.31 www.madressa.net

A STORY ABOUT IMAM ALI AR_RIDHA (A) IMAM ZAAMIN: The king at the time of our 8 th Imam, Imam Ali Ar Ridha (A) was Mamoon Rashid son of Haroon Rashid. Mamoon Rashid had forced Imam Ar Ridha (A) to take the position of his heir apparent (i.e. Imam Ali Ar Ridha (A) was supposed to take over as king after Mamoon Rashid); because Mamoon wanted to be accepted by the Shias. Although Imam (A) did not want to take this position, he said yes and then made full use of it to preach Islam openly. To show to the people how much he thought of Imam (A), Mamoon Rashid had new coins made with Imam Ali Ar Ridha (A) s name on it. EACH IMAM (A) IS REMEMBERED FOR A SPECIFIC THING: E.G.: - We remember and ask our 4 th Imam (A) to pray on our behalf when we are ill. - We remember and ask our 6 th Imam (A) to pray on our behalf for our daily requirements. - And in the same way, we ask our 8 th Imam (A) to pray that our journey is goes well and that we return safely to our homes. Our 8 th Imam, Imam Ali Ar Ridha (A) is also called as Imam-e-Zaamin. When Muslims go on journeys they take with them something called Imam-e- Zaamin (A). Zaamin means "The Guarantor". One day, when Imam Ar Ridha (A) was on a journey, from Madina to Marw), while in a jungle, he came across a hunter, who was about to kill a deer. The deer was trying to get away and when she saw Imam Ar Ridha (A), she said something to him. Our 8 th Imam (A) asked the hunter to free the deer so that she could go and feed her little baby deers who were very hungry. Imam (A) also told the hunter that once the deer had fed her babies she would come back. The hunter allowed the deer to go because Imam (A) had told him to, but he did not think the deer will come back. Imam (A) waited with the hunter until the deer returned with her young ones. The hunter was amazed on witnessing this miraculous event and he set the deer free as a mark of respect for Imam Ali Ar Ridha (A). It was after this historical event that our 8 th Imam (A) became known as Imam-e-Zaamin (A) Akhlaq Page 4.32 www.madressa.net

WORKSHEET: MANNERS OF TRAVELLING: Colour the pictures and write next to each mode of travel below one thing you should do before travelling. Akhlaq Page 4.33 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 14: HASTE Haste means to do something in such a hurry that you are not thinking as clearly as you could do. When you are hasty, then the chances are that you will make mistakes. If you take your time, and do things at a steady pace, then you will have a chance to think about what you are doing, and so you will do it properly. But when you are in a rush, then your mind is working very fast, and you might forget something, which will cause a lot of problems later on. There is a saying in English, that "Haste is waste." This means that if you rush something, then you may forget a small point, which will cause you even more bother than if you took your time and did the job properly in the first place. One of the most important things which you should never rush is your prayers. If you hasten your prayers, then you will not be paying attention to Allah, and this shows that you are ungrateful. Hurrying prayers also means that you will not gain as much benefit from it. Always take your time to do things. Think before you act. Do not take so much time that you don't get anything done, but at the same time do not be so hasty that you forget something, and then have to do it all again. The main thing that you SHOULD make haste in, is rushing to say prayers on time, or Namaze Jamaat. If you hear Adhaan, then you should rush to join the prayers. What should you do if: 1. You are in the middle of your prayers, and your cousins come home to play. 2. You are doing your homework in your room, and you know that the FA Cup Final is going to come on television in 10 minutes. 3. You are eating your food at the table, with your family, and your friend calls on you to play. What would a hasty person do in the above, and what could the results be. What would a hasty person do in the above? Akhlaq Page 5.18 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 4: RESPECT TO PARENTS Respect means to listen someone, and have regards for them. It also means to think that someone is important, and pay attention to them without making faces or feeling bad. Allah explains in Qur'an (2:83) to Obey Him and respect our parents. This shows how important it is to listen and obey the wishes of your parents. There is a hadith that "Heaven lies under the feet of your mother." This means that a person who pleases his mother, and makes her satisfied with him, will find heaven much easier to get to. Our Holy Prophet (S) explains that Whomsoever displeases their parents, their Ibadaat (prayers) are not accepted. This hadith tells us that Allah will not accept a person's prayers, if that same person displeases his parents. Since one of Allah's greatest commands is to obey our parents, how can we go against that? Children brought up in a western society do not see respect shown to parents around them. After marriage, it is normal to leave parents alone and send them to old peoples' homes. Islam tells us that this is not the right thing to do. One should always help their parents, and never leave them alone in hardship or trouble. When you wake up in the morning, one of the first things you should do is to go and say "Salamun Alaykum" to your parents. Duties to Parents 1. Never raise your voice to them. 2. When they first enter a room, stand up if you are sitting. 3. Do not interrupt them when they are speaking. 4. Do not correct their mistakes in front of others. Allah loves the person who respects his parents so much, that he is blessed with Thawaab. Akhlaq Page 5.8 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 5: THINK THE BEST OF OTHERS: Allah is the only judge as He sees everything and is aware of everything. We have no right to judge other people whether they are Muslims or not. Imam Zainul 'Abideen (A) said: You should think more of a person younger than you as he has had less time to do bad deeds. You should think more of a person older than you as he has had more time to do good deeds. You should think more of a person the same age as you because you do not know what he has done but you know exactly what good and bad you have done The above saying teaches us that we should always think the best of others. Prophet Ibrahim was very fond of guests. He knew how much Thawaab one gets for looking after a guest. He liked to invite travellers to his house for food and a bed to sleep in. Every morning Prophet Ibrahim stood by the main road near his house and waited for travellers to pass so that he could invite them to his house. Once it so happened that no traveller passed on that road for 3 days. This made Prophet Ibrahim very sad.. Then on the 4 th day an old man passed along that road. Prophet Ibrahim was very happy and invited the man to come to his house for some food. The old man agreed. Akhlaq Page 4.10 www.madressa.net

When they sat down to eat, Prophet Ibrahim said "Bismillah" before starting to eat but the old man did not say anything. Prophet Ibrahim asked the old man why he did not begin in the name of Allah, as it was Allah who had provided this food for them. The old man replied that he did not believe in Allah, instead he worshipped fire. Prophet Ibrahim was very angry and asked the old man to leave his house at once. As soon as the old man had gone the angel Jibrael came to Prophet Ibrahim from Allah and told him that Allah had been feeding this unbelieving old man for 70 years. Could Prophet Ibrahim not tolerate him for just one meal? Prophet Ibrahim was very sorry and ran after the old man and persuaded him to return to his house so that they may eat together. Moral: - Do not judge anyone - only Allah can do that. - Everyone has rights whether they be Muslims or non Muslims - Allah loves for you to take care of guests. Akhlaq Page 4.11 www.madressa.net

WORKSHEET: THINK THE BEST OF OTHERS: Write the saying of Imam Ali Zainul Abideen (A): You should think more of someone: 1. Younger than you because: 2. Older than you because: 3. Same age as you because: Akhlaq Page 4.12 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 6: TO BE MERCIFUL AND TO BE GENTLE To be merciful means to be kind and good. We say that Allah is the MOST Merciful. This means that Allah is the Kindest and always helps us when we need it. We should always help anybody when they ask. If somebody does something wrong towards us we should forgive them and be kind towards them, this is what merciful means. It is good to help someone when they ask for it, but it is even better to help someone who is in difficulty, without them having to ask. Some people have dignity, which means they have self-respect. If they are in a problem, they will not ask since they do not want people to feel pity for them. It is up to you to keep your eyes open, and see when people need help. If you can help them, then you should do so. If you cannot help them, then try to find someone who can. To be gentle also means to be kind towards somebody. If someone did something you did not like, you should not get angry and shout, but you should be polite and explain until they understand what they did wrong. How should you behave in the following places: 1. You are playing with your friends, and one of them falls down and gets hurt. All your friends start laughing. 2. You are playing, and someone you do not know falls and gets hurt. All your friends start laughing. 3. You are on the way to school, and you see a bird which has had its wing broken, what should you do. 4. You see a little boy being bullied by others, how should you react? Akhlaq Page 5.10 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 7: TRY AND TRY AGAIN Allah says In the Holy Qur'an: "And that there is nothing for man except what he tried, And that his efforts shall soon be seen, Then shall he be rewarded to the fullest measure" The above Ayat tells us that we will not get anything unless we try to get it. Constant effort is the key to success. If at first you do not succeed then try and try again until you do. You should never give up. And if for some reason you do not succeed even after trying again and again remember you will have earned the Thawaab for all your effort - as Allah has promised in the Holy Qur'an in the verse written above. Amir Timur was a great Mongolian king, who was well known for his bravery. He had conquered nearly half of the world known at that time. He said his success was all due to an ant, who had taught him never to give up. Once long ago before he had become such a great warrior he was fighting a battle and was losing. He decided to run away and hide himself in the mountains. Here he sat quietly, when he noticed an ant working. The ant was carrying a grain of rice much bigger than itself. With this grain the ant was trying to climb a wall. The grain fell, and the ant came down for the grain once again. Again the grain fell and again the ant went down to get it. The ant tried and tried again never giving up. The King counted that the ant tried 33 times until it finally succeeded in taking the grain up the wall. Seeing the effort that the ant put into getting what it wanted the king went about collecting his run-away soldiers and rebuilt his army. After this event with the ant the king never gave up in any battle and became a great warrior. Moral: To succeed in anything you have to try and try again. Akhlaq Page 4.16 www.madressa.net

WORKSHEET: TRY AND TRY AGAIN: What did the king learn from the ant and how? Finish the sentence in the key below: And if for some reason you do not succeed even after trying again and again, what has Allah promised you? Akhlaq Page 4.17 www.madressa.net

STORY ABOUT NEVER GIVING UP: A man woke up early in order to go and pray his Fajr (Morning) prayer in the Masjid (Mosque). He got dressed, made his Wudhu and was on his way to the Masjid. On his way to the Masjid, the man fell and his clothes got dirty. He got up, brushed himself off, and headed back home. At home, he changed his clothes, made his ablution, and was, again, on his way to the Masjid. On his way to the Masjid, he fell again and at the same spot! He, again, got up, brushed himself off and headed home. At home he, once again, changed his clothes, made his ablution and was on his way to the Masjid. On his way to the Masjid, he met a man holding a lamp. He asked the man of his identity and the man replied "I saw you fall twice on your way to the Masjid, so I brought a lamp so I can light your way." The first man thanked him profoundly and the two were on their way to the Masjid. Once at the Masjid, the first man asked the man with the lamp to come in and pray Fajr with him. The second man refused. The first man asked him a couple more times and, again, the answer was the same. The first man asked him why he did not wish to come in and pray. The man replied "I am Shaitan (Satan)." The man was shocked at this reply. Shaitan (Satan) went on to explain, "I saw you on your way to the Masjid and it was I who made you fall. When you went home, cleaned yourself and went back on your way to the Masjid, Allah forgave all of your sins. I made you fall a second time, and even that did not make you stay home, but rather, you went back on your way to the Masjid. Because of that, Allah forgave all the sins of your family. I was afraid if I made you fall one more time, then Allah will forgive the sins of the people of your village, so I made sure that you reached the Masjid safely." Moral: Do not let Shaitan (Satan) benefit from his actions. Do not put off a good that you intended to do as you never know how much reward you might receive from the hardships you encounter while trying to achieve that good. Akhlaq Page 4.18 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 11: MUTTAHIRAT: There are 12 Mutahhiraat but the most common one is Water. WATER = 2 KINDS MUTLAQ = Pure Water MUDHAF = Mixed Water Mutlaq Water - Is water that has not changed in colour, taste or smell. - Can make a Najis thing Pak - E.g. Tap water Mudhaf Water - Cannot make a Najis thing Pak - Becomes Najis when in contact with Najasaat - E.g. Lemon Juice Now you know. Mutahhiraat are those things that make a Najis thing Paak. Mutlaq water can make a nagis thing PAK Mudhaf water cannot make najis thing PAK Fiqh Page 4.22 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 12: NABUWWAT (PROPHETHOOD) Nabuwwat means Prophethood. It calls for the belief in the Prophets sent by Allah from time to time to guide the people. Allah sent 124,000 in all. Prophet Adam (A) was the first prophet and Prophet Muhammad (S) was the last prophet sent by Allah. When Allah created us, it was so that we should worship Him. If he had not sent down Prophets (A) to guide us, how would we have known what to do to please Him? It was because He wanted us to find Him that He sent so many Prophets (A) to teach and guide us. EXERCISE 12: NABUWWAT: Last year you learnt about the Prophets too. See what you can remember and answer the questions below. 1. Name the Ulul Azm Prophets: a. b. c. d. e. 2. Certain Prophets had books revealed to them. They were: a. Prophet b. Prophet c. Prophet d. Prophet 3. The Books revealed to them were? a. b. c. d. Fiqh Girls Page 5A.27 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 12: IMAAMAT (SUCCESSORS OF THE PROPHET) Aimmah = Plural of Imam After the death of Prophet Muhammad (S) the duty of guiding the Muslims was the responsibility of the Aimmah (A). Allah chose 12 Aimmah (A). Imam Ali (A) was the first and Imam Mahdi (A) is the last Imam. By the will of Allah he is still alive today. He is the Imam (A) of our time. One day a man made a very clever machine. Many people found the machine useful and used it all the time. Before he died, the man taught his student how to fix the machine if it ever got spoilt. After his death, whenever the people had any questions about their machines, they would go to the student, and he would always answer their questions. Similarly, although the Prophet (S) had brought all the laws of Islam, after his death there needed to be someone who could answer the peoples questions. These were the Aimmah (A), who were chosen by Allah to carry on with the Prophet s (S) work. EXERCISE 12: IMAAMAT: List the names of all our Aimmah in order. See how many you can remember by yourself before asking for help. 1 st Imam is Imam 2 nd Imam is Imam 3 rd Imam is Imam 4 th Imam is Imam 5 th Imam is Imam 6 th Imam is Imam 7 th Imam is Imam 8 th Imam is Imam 9 th Imam is Imam 10 th Imam is Imam 11 th Imam is Imam 12 th Imam is Imam Fiqh Girls Page 5A.28 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 12: QIYAAMAT (DAY OF JUDGEMENT) Qiyaamat means the Day of Judgement or Resurrection. The day when everyone will be brought back to life to account for their deeds. Qiyaamat Then, according to their deeds, they will either be rewarded by being sent to Heaven or punished by being sent to Hell. There was a Muslim boy who used to steal sweets from the Corner Shop. He used to do it secretly and hide everything in his room. One day his friend came visiting and saw all the sweets in his room. Now the boy was terrified. Would the boy tell someone what he had seen? How would the boy face his family and friends in the mosque? He could not sleep at nights as he worried about everybody finding out about his stealing. What a strange boy! He was more scared of his friend than of Allah. Allah sees all we do and there will be a day when we will have to account for all we have done. That will be the Day of Judgement. EXERCISE 12 - DISCUSSION ON USOOL-E-DEEN Can you remember the answers to the following questions without looking at the notes in your manual? Try and see 1. Why did Allah send Prophets (A)? 2. Why do we need the Aimmah (A)? 3. Why did Allah keep a Day of Judgement? Fiqh Girls Page 5A.29 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 14: THINGS THAT BREAK WUDHU: Going to the toilet. Passing Wind [Stomach Wind] Whoops!! Have to do Wudhu again!! Sleeping Becoming unconscious Now you know. Only 4 things break wudhu Fiqh Page 4.26 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 15: BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO TAQLID In all parts of our life, we need the advice of people who are experts in that field. In the same way, in the matter of Islamic laws, we must obey the rulings of the experts of that law this is called Taqlid. Taqlid means obeying Islamic Laws according to the ruling of a Mujtahid. Mujtahid is an expert in the ruling of Islamic Laws. Muqallid is a person who does Taqlid, that is follows the orders of the Mujtahid. Every Baligh male and female has to follow (WAJIB) the rules regarding Furoo-edeen. E.g. how to perform Salaat, rules of fasting, how to perform Haj, etc Upon becoming Baligh, you should make Niyyat (intention) that you will act or follow one Mujtahid and perform all your Wajibaat according to the rules he has set out. We are at the present time doing Taqlid of Ayatullah al-uzama Syed Ali Seestani (of Najaf, Iraq) GIRLS BECOME BALIGHA UPON COMPLETION OF THEIR NINTH LUNAR YEAR (ACCORDING TO THE ISLAMIC CALENDAR) AND AFTER THAT ALL WAJIBAAT BECOME APPLICABLE UPON THEM. BOYS BECOME BALIGH CLOSER TO THE COMPLETION OF THEIR FIFTEENTH LUNAR YEAR 2260 Fiqh Girls Page 5A.34 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 18: PREPARATION FOR SALAAT Before you start your Salaat you must prepare yourself. This is known as MUQADDAMATUS-SALAAT. There is mnemonic checklist to remember this. It goes QWIPTC (pronounced kweepts) and stands for: Q = QIBLAH W = WUDHU I = INTENTION (Niyyat) P = PLACE T = TIME C = CLOTHES & BODY Before starting salaat, we must prepare ourselves in the following manner: QIBLAH WE MUST KNOW IN WHICH DIRECTION TO FACE TAHARAT WUDHU MUST BE PERFORMED INTENTION TO PRAY - NIYYAT PLACE OF PRAYER MUST BE PAK AND NOT GHASBI TIME OF SALAAT WE MUST KNOW THE RIGHT TIME FOR OFFERING OUR SALAAT CLOTHES AND BODY MUST BE TAHIR, CLEAN AND PAK FOR SALAAT Fiqh Girls 5A.41 www.madressa.net

EXERCISE 18: PREPARATION FOR SALAAT Try and answer the following question on your own but always ask for help if you find it difficult both from your teacher and your parents Match the six Muqaddamatus - Salaat below with their meanings. Action Meaning 1. Taharat A) You must pray at the proper time 2. Wudhu B) The direction should be towards the Holy Ka aba 3. Clothes of Prayer C) Your prayer mat and where you pray must be Pak and not Ghasbi 4. Direction of Qiblah D) Your body must be Pak 5. Place of Prayer E) They must be Pak and should cover the parts of your body as required 6. Time of Prayer F) Must be performed with clean and clear water If there are 5 minutes left for the time of Salaat can I perform Wudhu? Why? If there are 5 minutes left for the time of Salaat can I recite Adhan and Ikamah while I wait for the time to set in? Fiqh Girls 5A.42 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 24-25: QIBLAH WHEN YOU HAVE DONE YOUR WUDHU AND ARE READY TO PRAY, WHAT DIRECTION SHOULD YOU FACE? You should face the direction of the Ka'aba, which is in Makka. BUT WHY SHOULD WE FACE KA'ABA? Allah has said that: - all the Muslims are brothers and sisters. - all are the same in their relationship to Allah. - all believe in ONE and the same Allah. So, Allah has commanded that, all the Muslims should face in one direction at the time of prayers and Allah, as the direction for prayers has selected the Ka aba. Just imagine how funny it would look if four Muslims in a single room were to pray facing four different directions! So, facing the direction of Ka'aba is Wajib for all Muslims. It is also a sign of Muslim UNITY and BROTHERHOOD. In England the direction of Qiblah is south-east. This can be found using a compass: SE THE KA'ABA IS THE HOUSE OF ALLAH THE KA'ABA IS OUR QIBLAH QIBLAH IS THE DIRECTION WE FACE IN SALAAT Fiqh Girls 5A.50 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 24-25: FINDING THE QIBLAH The Three Ways Of Finding Qiblah - any convincing means of knowledge - mihrab of a Mosque - grave of a Muslim 1. Any Convincing Means Of Knowledge asking a trustworthy person OR using a compass. 2. Mihrab Of A Mosque Mihrab is a place in the Mosque specially built for the person who leads the Salaat. It is like an arch that has been carved into the wall and is also built in the direction of Qiblah 3. Grave Of A Muslim When Muslims dies, they are laid down in their grave on their right side, with their face towards the Qiblah. If you know which side the dead person s head is, then you can easily know the direction of the Qiblah. NEWS! NEWS! NEWS! NEWS! NEWS! DID YOU KNOW THAT ALL SATELLITE DISHES IN ENGLAND FACE TOWARDS QIBLAH SO, IF YOU WANT TO PRAY WHEN TRAVELLING AROUND ENGLAND, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS LOOK FOR A SATELLITE DISH!! HOW COOL IS THAT! Fiqh Girls 5A.51 www.madressa.net

UNCERTAINTY OF QIBLAH Ali and his friends went on a school trip abroad DAY 1 I have no idea at all about which direction to pray and my Salaat is becoming Qadha! Help! What should I do? Don t panic! Just pray in any direction. However, for your next Salaat, if there is enough time, you will have to pray in all 4 directions. If you have no idea which direction to pray in then - pray in any direction if there isn t enough time. - pray in all 4 directions if there is enough time. Fiqh Girls 5A.52 www.madressa.net

DAY 2 I have been looking around and I am now sure Qiblah is either towards the North or the South. What should I do? Then you must pray twice, facing both directions. If you think it is one of two directions - you will pray in both directions. Fiqh Girls 5A.53 www.madressa.net

DAY 3 I am still not sure which direction Qiblah is but I have a strong feeling that it is North East, so now what should I do? Well, if you have a strong feeling about it, then you should pray facing that direction. If you do not know the Qiblah & there is no way of finding out - you should pray facing the direction you have a strong feeling about. Fiqh Girls 5A.54 www.madressa.net

EXERCISE 24-25: QIBLAH Answer the following Questions remember to ask for help if you are not sure. You may by now be able to use the Risala (Islamic Laws) by yourself try and find the answers from there before asking for help. The mosque that surrounds the Holy Ka aba is called Masjidul Haraam. It circles the Ka aba all the way around, if you go into the centre towards the Ka aba, how would you find Qiblah? Imam removed the idols from the Ka'aba and the same Imam was also born inside the Ka'aba. Answer all the following questions from the Risala. Make sure that you write both your answer and the Masail number. 1. Name the 3 occasions during which it is Wajib to face Qiblah: a) Masail No. b) Masail No. c) Masail No. 2. For the following questions, answer (T) or (F) and for all questions whose answer is (T) - give the Masail number too: It is Haraam to face Qiblah whilst in the toilet. Masail No. It is Wajib to face Qiblah whilst doing Wudhu. Masail No. When a Muslim is buried, he is laid down on his right, with his face towards Qiblah. Masail No. For those who go inside the Holy Mosque of Ka aba, the Holy Mosque is their Qiblah. Masail No. It is Mustahab to keep a dying person s feet towards Qiblah. Masail No. Fiqh Girls 5A.55 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 11: TAWHEED Tawheed (Oneness of God) Tawheed means that: - Allah is One. - He does not have any partner. - He has no parents or children. - He does not need anything and everything needs Him. - There is nothing equal to Him. The Surah that best explains Tawheed is Suratul Ikhlas (Tawheed) Allah is everywhere and He can see everything we do we will have to answer to Him for everything we do and say, so we must always THINK before we do or say anything because even if others don t see us Allah DOES!! EXERCISE 11 TAWHEED: There is a short Surah of the Holy Qur'an called at-tawheed (Sura No.112). Read the translation and then write down: Remember to perform Wudhu before touching the writings of Qur an. 1. What does the first verse say about Allah? 2. What does the second verse say about His needs? 3. What does the third verse say about His children and parents? 4. What does the last verse say about Allah? Fiqh Girls Page 5A.25 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 11: ADAALAT (JUSTICE OF GOD) Adaalat means that Allah is Just. He is not a tyrant. He will reward everybody according to his or her deeds. Those who obey His commands will be awarded a place in Paradise and those who disobey Him will be sent to Hell. Sometimes we think that Justice means fairness and injustice means unfairness. This is not completely correct. When the word Justice is used for Allah, it means that He keeps a balance between the needs of all His creatures. EXERCISE 11: ADAALAT: Whenever we pray to Allah to forgive us for our sins, we are taught to ask Allah to judge us through His Mercy and not through His Justice. Discuss it with your teacher, family and friends and write down in your own words what you think. Fiqh Girls Page 5A.26 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 2: THE AHLUL BAYT TITLES: The Ahlul Bayt have many titles given to them because of the special qualities they have. The most common title of each Imam is: IMAM Name TITLE 1 st Imam Ali (A) Ameerul Mu'mineen 2 nd Imam Hasan (A) Al-Mujtaba 3 rd Imam Husain (A) Sayyidush Shuhada 4 th Imam Ali Zainul-Abideen (A) Zainul Abideen 5 th Imam Muhammad Al Baqir (A) Al-Baqir 6 th Imam Ja far As Sadiq (A) As-Sadiq 7 th Imam Musa Al Kadhim (A) Al-Kadhim 8 th Imam Ali Ar Ridha (A) Ar-Ridha 9 th Imam Muhammad At Taqi (A) At-Taqi 10 th Imam Ali An Naqi (A) An-Naqi 11 th Imam Hasan Al Askari (A) Al-Askari 12 th Imam Muhammad Al Mahdi (A) Al-Mahdi Tareekh Page 4.4 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 5: THE FIVE EIDS INTRODUCTION: Eid means an event which happens again and again. In Islam, we celebrate Eid as the happy festival which occurs every year. In Sura Al Maidah, Prophet Isa asked Allah for food from Heaven because his followers wanted a miracle to increase their faith, and to always celebrate the occasion with joy. We are lucky that we have five types of Eids in a year: 1. Eid ul-juma 2. Eid ul-haj 3. Eid ul-fitr 4. Eid-e-Gadhir 5. Eid-e-Mubahila WORKSHEET: THE FIVE EIDS INTRODUCTION: Write in each cake the 5 types of Eids that we celebrate each year: What does the word Eid mean? TOPIC 11: NAMES OF ISLAMIC MONTHS: In Islam we follow the Lunar (moon) calendar as opposed to the Solar (sun) calendar. To follow the Lunar calendar, we use the shape of the moon to work out which day of the month it is. The Islamic month has 29 or 30 days, while the calendar month has 30 or 31 days. The Islamic months are: MUHARRAM SAFAR RABIUL AWWAL RABIUL AKHAR JAMAAD UL AWWAL JAMAAD UL AKHAR RAJAB SHABAN RAMADHAN SHAWWAAL DHULQA'ADA DHULHIJJA Tareekh Page 4.29 www.madressa.net

WORKSHEET: NAMES OF ISLAMIC MONTHS: Make your own Islamic calendar. Your Teacher will give you a sheet with the names written on it Cut along the dotted line, then stick it on some cardboard. Then slide the card with the slits cut through the months card. Tareekh Page 4.30 www.madressa.net

MOON PROJECT As we every Islamic month begins and ends with the birth of the new moon. 1. Let each group of children (4-6 children in a group), work together to create a night sky on a black or dark blue construction paper. If they can draw stars by themselves, let them add stars, or let them stick on stars (the self-sticking kind) or a combination of both. They can use white, yellow, gold, or silver crayons, pencils, or markers. 2. Create a moon for every group or let them do it, if they can cut a circle in a white construction paper. You may also use a black construction paper then colour it white or silver to represent a full moon. 3. slice each moon into 6 pieces, they will be crescent shapes. You may cut the moon into two halves first, then each half into three pieces. Number these pieces on the back to remember which piece comes next. Remember that each half moon takes seven days to develop. It takes two weeks to develop into a full moon. Each piece will represent a stage of the moon. 4. As you go through the month, ask the children to observe the moon every night from the first day. When they come to the class ask them to use glue or better to use Velcro, to stick the first piece (crescent) on the night sky background. Every Sunday as they see the moon getting bigger, you can let them add the next piece. Keep doing this to the end of the month. Remember the second half of the month you will have to remove pieces, every Sunday, until there is no moon at the end of the month "phases of the moon art" crescent, half, gibbous, full, gibbous, half, crescent Tareekh Page 4.31 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 15: PROPHET SULAYMAN (A) Prophet Sulayman (A) was the youngest son of Prophet Dawood (A) and inherited him. Allah granted him the greatest kingdom that any king has ever ruled over. 1. He had control over the wind and could use it do direct his throne through the air. 2. Both men and jinn served him faithfully 3. He could order the birds to carry out his commands by speaking to them in their own language. As a result of these special blessings, Prophet Sulayman's (A) kingdom was very powerful and many countries were under its control. When the army of Prophet Sulayman (A) marched on a mission, it was an awe-inspiring sight. The Holy Qur'an describes one such episode as follows: Sulayman's army consisting of men, jinn and birds were gathered together in his presence in ranks. When they arrived in the valley of the ants, an ant said (to the others), "O ants, enter your dwellings lest you are crushed by Sulayman and his army by mistake." Naml, 27 : 17,18 Prophet Sulayman (A) heard the warning of the chief of the ants and asked it to come forward. He said to it, "Did you think that a Prophet of Allah would ever harm any of His creatures?" The ant replied, "No I did not, but I was worried that when my fellow ants would see the grandeur of your army, they would underestimate their own bounties from Allah and become ungrateful. It is for this reason that I asked them to hide out of sight." QUESTION BOX How did Prophet Sulayman hear and understand what the chief of the ants said? Tareekh Page 5.46 www.madressa.net

One day Prophet Sulayman (A) noticed that his messenger bird, Hud Hud (a Hoopoe bird) was missing. The Holy Qur'an says: And (Sulayman) inspected the birds and said, "How is it that I cannot see Hud Hud. Is he absent? I shall certainly punish him severely or slaughter him unless he has a good reason (for his absence). Naml, 27 : 20,21 It was not long before Hud Hud appeared, saying, "I have been to a country about which you may know nothing. The country is Saba (Sheba) and it is ruled by a woman who has complete control over her people. Her throne is especially grand. However, they all worship the sun and have forsaken Allah." Prophet Sulayman (A) sent a letter to Bilqees, the Queen of Saba, saying, "In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent the Most Merciful. Do not rebel against me and come towards me in submission to Allah." When Bilqees received the letter, she asked her ministers about their opinion on the matter. They replied that they had powerful armies and they were not afraid to go to war, but the final decision was in her hands. Bilqees wanted to settle the matter peacefully so she sent her messengers to Prophet Sulayman (A) with costly gifts and waited for his reaction. When the representatives of Saba arrived in the kingdom of Prophet Sulayman (A), they were amazed to see the splendour of his buildings and palace. Prophet Sulayman (A) welcomed them and asked for the reply to his letter. When they presented him with the gifts, he impatiently put them aside, and told them, "What are these riches? I have been given such bounties from Allah that are possessed by none. Return to your country and inform your Queen that I am sending such an army towards Saba that no one will be able to withstand." When Bilqees received this message and the report about Prophet Sulayman's (A) power, she decided to submit herself before him and accept his invitation to embrace Islam. Tareekh Page 5.47 www.madressa.net

When Prophet Sulayman (A) learnt that she was coming to his kingdom, he turned to his people and said, "Who amongst you can bring me the throne of the Queen of Saba before she herself gets here?" One jinn said, "I will bring it before you rise from your place." But Asife Barqiah, who had been taught the special Name of Allah by Prophet Sulayman (A), said, according to the Holy Qur'an: Said he who had some knowledge of the Book, "I will bring it to you before your eye blinks", and when he (Sulayman) saw the throne settle beside him, he said, "This is by the Grace of my Lord so that He may test whether I am grateful or ungrateful... Naml, 27 : 40(Part) RESEARCH BOX Asife Barqiah is described in the Quran as the one who had some knowledge of the Book, which book is the Quran referring to? In preparation for the arrival of Bilqees, Prophet Sulayman (A) had ordered a palace of glass to be built. Under the glass floors, there was a pool of water with various kinds of fish swimming in it. When Bilqees arrived, he took her to the palace. The Holy Qur'an says: She was told, "Enter the palace."; but when she saw it she thought there was a pool of water and bared her legs. (Sulayman) said, "Indeed this is but a place of glass." (She) said, "My Lord! verily I have been unjust to myself. I submit with Sulayman to Allah, the Lord of the worlds." Naml, 27 : 44 Bilqees was fooled by the appearance of water and hitched up her dress to her knees to save it from getting wet. When she realised her mistake, she at once understood the subtle point that Prophet Sulayman (A) was making to her. He was showing her that things are not always what they seem, and even if the sun she worshipped was the most powerful force she could see, there was another, more powerful, Force behind it. Tareekh Page 5.48 www.madressa.net

The intelligent lady understood the message and turned to Allah in repentance and faith. Prophet Sulayman (A) then returned her to Saba and allowed her to rule in his name. Prophet Sulayman (A) ruled over his people with justice for a long time. His power extended across most of the known world. This unique blessing was in response to his prayer, which is recorded in the Holy Qur'an: He said, "O my Lord! Forgive me and grant me a kingdom such as shall not befit anyone after me, verily You are the Granter of bounties (without measure). Saad, 38 : 35 RESEARCH BOX Who is the Queen of Sheba? Now you know Prophet Sulayman is the youngest son of Prophet Sulayman and Allah granted him the greatest kingdom ever. He had control over the wind; he could order birds to carry out his commands by speaking in their language; both jinn and men served him faithfully. Prophet Sulayman s army was awe-inspiring. When they were once marching through the valley of the ants Prophet Sulayman over heard the chief of ants to hide in their dwellings because the chief feared that the ants would under estimate their own bounties in seeing the Grandeur and splendour of the army. Once Prophet Sulayman s messenger bird, Hud Hud, appeared to him and informed him of a country that was ruled by a woman; Bilqees, the Queen of Saba. But they all worshipped the Sun. Prophet Sulayman sent a letter to Bilqees to submit towards Allah. When she received the letter she wanted to settle the matter peacefully so she sent him costly gifts. Prophet Sulayman was not happy to receive the gifts as Allah had granted him with everything. He sent an army towards Saba. Bilqees decided to accept his invitation and made her way to Prophet Sulayman. Prophet Sulayman wanted Bilqees s throne to arrive in his kingdom before her. Asife Barqiah, who had been taught the special Name of Allah and had some knowledge of the Book said he could bring it with a blink of an eye. And that s what he did. Prophet Sulayman also ordered a glass palace to be built which had a pool of water with various kinds of fishes under the glass floors. When Prophet Sulayman took Bilqees to the palace she lifted her dress up as to avoid getting it wet. She then realised things are not as they seem, so the most powerful force that she could see, the sun was not as great as the force behind it, Allah. She asked for repentance and submitted to Allah. MORAL BOX When you see greatness and luxury do not forget your own rewards given to you by Allah and always be thankful to him. Things are not always as they seem. TOPIC 13: PROPHET AYYUB (A) Prophet Ayyub (A) was the grandson of Prophet Ishaaq (A) son of Prophet Ibrahim (A) and his wife was the granddaughter of Prophet Yusuf (A). Allah gave him many blessings: He had a large flock of sheep A lot of Land He had Many children He was respected by his people Prophet Ayyub (A) was generous with his wealth and took care of orphans and used to provide food for the poor. He was mindful of the needs of all and especially his relatives, whom he always treated kindly. For all his bounties, Prophet Ayyub (A) remained ever grateful to Allah. On seeing the devotion of Prophet Ayyub (A) to Allah, Shaitan decided to try to lead him astray. Since he was dealing with a Prophet, Shaitan requested Allah for power over Prophet Ayyub's (A) affairs and said, "O Allah, while Ayyub enjoys your blessings he remains grateful to you. But give me control over his affairs and I will make him turn away from you." Allah was fully aware of the patience and steadfastness of Prophet Ayyub (A), but as a trial for His Prophet and as a lesson for mankind, he granted Shaitan's request. Shaitan came down to earth and caused: the destruction of all Prophet Ayyub's (A) animals His property He killed his children as well. However, Prophet Ayyub (A) turned to Allah with even greater intensity than before. When Shaitan saw his plot defeated, he caused: 1. Prophet Ayyub (A) to lose his health and be got with a severe disease. Seeing the troubles befalling Prophet Ayyub (A), 2. His people began saying that he must had done something awful to deserve the punishment of Allah and they began to avoid him. 3. Finally he was exiled from his community and had to leave the town. Tareekh Page 5.39 www.madressa.net

Prophet Ayyub (A) began to live in the wilderness and passed his time praying to Allah. His only companion was his wife Rahma, who supported them by doing odd-jobs in people's houses. Several years passed and Shaitan watched helplessly as Prophet Ayyub (A) remained steadfast in his devotion and prayers to Allah. Finally, he decided that he would try Prophet Ayyub's (A) patience through his wife. QUESTION BOX Why was Shaitan feeling so helpless and defeated? One day Shaitan came in the form of a human being to Rahma and told her that he knew of a way to cure her husband of his terrible disease. He told her to take a sheep and slaughter it in his name instead of the Name of Allah. He claimed that its meat would immediately cure Prophet Ayyub (A). When she came back and suggested this treatment to her husband, he instantly realised what had happened. He said to her, "Has the enemy of my Lord misled you? Pity on you! How many years did we enjoy a life of happiness due to the Mercy of Allah?" She replied, "Eighty years." He said, "And how long have we been under this trial?" She said, "For seven years." Then Prophet Ayyub (A) told her angrily, "Why should we not bear all this for the same period of time as we lived happily? By God! if I am relieved of my afflictions I will flog you with a hundred lashes for your evil suggestion." He then told her to go away and leave him alone. QUESTION BOX Why did Shaitan decide to try Prophet Ayyub s patience through his wife? Finally, Prophet Ayyub (A) turned to Allah and complained about Shaitan's repeated efforts to make him forsake his beliefs. Tareekh Page 5.40 www.madressa.net

The Holy Qur'an says: (Remember) Ayyub when he called to his Lord, "I am afflicted with distress and You are the Most Compassionate of all." So We heard his cry and relieved him of the misery he was in. Anbiya, 21 : 83, 84(Part) Allah accepted the prayers of Prophet Ayyub (A) and cured him of all his troubles. The Holy Qur'an says: (And We said to him) "Stamp your foot on the ground. This stream is for you to wash with, (and) a cool and (refreshing) drink." And we gave him his family and more like them; a mercy from Us and a reminder for those with understanding. And it was said to him, "Take in your hand a bunch of (thin) sticks (like fibre) and strike (your wife) with it, so as not to break your oath." Verily, We found him steadfast, an excellent servant. Verily, he turned to Us often. Saad, 38 : 42-44 Prophet Ayyub (A) struck the ground with his foot and a stream of water came out. When he washed himself with the water he saw that his sickness disappeared and he returned to normal. His wife Rahma was worried about him, but when she returned she was amazed to see him restored to his former health. Allah then restored Prophet Ayyub (A) to his former prosperity. He was blessed with many children and more followers than he had before. There is a great lesson for us in the patience shown by Prophet Ayyub (A). He suffered his hardship without bitterness, and submitted himself to the will of Allah, Who rewards plentifully those who remain steadfast in seeking His pleasure. Tareekh Page 5.41 www.madressa.net

Now you know Prophet Ayyub was the grandson of Prophet Ishaaq Allah blessed Prophet Ayyub with a lot of wealth, land large flock of sheep and many children As a result Prophet Ayyub was generous and always remained Grateful to Allah Shaitan wanted to lead him astray, so he asked Allah for Power over Allah s affairs. Allah agreed. Shaitan caused destruction of his animals, property and children. He also made Prophet Ayyub lose his health and get a severe disease. The people of the town began to avoid him as they thought he was being punished for something he had done. He was told to leave his town. However Prophet Ayyub turned to Allah with even greater intensity. Shaitan decided to try Prophet Ayyub s patience through his wife Rahma. He appeared in the form of a human being and told Rahma that she can cure his disease by giving him meat that was slaughtered in his name instead of Allah. We she told Prophet Ayyub of such a treatment he was very angry and realised that it was the work of Shaitan. Prophet Ayyub prayed to Allah and he was cured of all his troubles. He then got back his wealth and there after had many children and more followers than before. MORAL BOX We have many problems in life but we should always have faith in Allah and be submitted to his will. He is the only one who will help us and reward us. Tareekh Page 5.42 www.madressa.net

TOPIC 4: PROPHET IDRIS (A) Prophet Idris (A) was the great-grandson of Prophet Sheeth (A) and was born 100 years after the death of Prophet Aadam (A). He was the third Prophet of Allah. The Holy Qur'an says: And mention Idris in the Book (Qur'an). He was a truthful person and a Prophet. And We raised him to a high station. Suratul Maryam, 19 : 56,57 Prophet Idris (A) used to tell the people to worship Allah and not to commit sins. He was a clever man and taught the people many new skills: 1. He was the first man to introduce the art of writing 2. He showed people how to measure weights with a balance 3. He taught them about the movements of planets 4. He taught people how to stitch clothes 5. He was the first man to make weapons for hunting and defence RESEARCH BOX Which Imam (A.S.) is famous for his knowledge? What does his title mean? At the time of Prophet Idris (A.) there was a cruel king who had full control over the life and property of the people. One day the king went out of his capital for an outing. On the way he saw a beautiful garden, which he liked very much. He called the owner and told him to hand over the garden to him. The owner, who was a God-fearing man, replied that the garden supported his family and he would not hand it over. The king offered to buy the land but the owner refused. The king then returned to his palace in an angry mood. The king's wife was a mean woman. When she heard what had happened, she advised the king to call a few of his faithless friends as witnesses in the court. She asked them to swear that the owner of the garden was no longer a believer in God and furthermore, he was plotting against the king. When these liars gave evidence in the court the owner was called and accused of these crimes. Although he swore that he was innocent, the king did not listen to him and killed him. He then took the dead man's land for himself. Tareekh Page 5.10 www.madressa.net

This murder by the greedy king displeased Allah and He commanded Prophet Idris (A) to go to the king and say to him that, not only had he killed a pious man, but he had stolen his land and left his family penniless. Prophet Idris (A) was also commanded to tell the king that Allah would punish him by taking his kingdom from him and destroy his capital and cause the flesh of his evil wife to be eaten by dogs. When Prophet Idris (A) brought this message to the palace, the king was furious and he told him, "It is better that you leave before you are killed by my hand." Prophet Idris (A) left, but the queen decided to send some men after him and kill him. QUESTION BOX If you were in the King s position would you have asked for Allah s forgiveness? Why? Prophet Idris (A) learnt that his life was in danger so he left the town and hid himself. He took shelter in a cave on a mountain and an angel used to provide him with food. He prayed to Allah saying, "O Lord! Do not send your blessings on this town." Prophet Idris's (A) prayer was granted and Allah's punishment descended on the king. He lost his throne and died a shameful death. His capital was destroyed and his wife's flesh was eaten by wild dogs. The kingdom passed into the hands of another cruel king. Twenty years passed after the disappearance of Prophet Idris (A). During this time not even a drop of rain fell and the people suffered terribly. They realised that their troubles were due to the curse of Prophet Idris (A) and they prayed to Allah to forgive them. Allah accepted their prayers and sent Prophet Idris (A) back to the town. People gathered all around him and promised that they would obey him and worship Allah. He then prayed for rain and the drought ended. Prophet Idris (A) guided his people for many years. He was one Prophet who had the respect and love of all his people. Finally Allah raised him to the heavens where he is alive even today. Tareekh Page 5.11 www.madressa.net

Now you know Prophet Idris (A) taught people to worship Allah. He was the first to introduce the art of writing. He was also taught the people how to make weapons for hunting and defence and how to stitch clothes. At the time of Prophet Idris (A) the cruel king in power unjustly accused a pious man of not being a believer in God. He had the man killed and then stole his land leaving his family penniless. Allah commanded Prophet Idris (A) to go to the king and tell him of his sin, and that Allah would punish him severely. When Prophet Idris (A) went and told him, the king was furious and threatened to kill him if he did not leave. So, Prophet Idris (A) left, but the queen sent some men after him to kill him. Prophet Idris (A) hid in a cave and prayed to Allah: O Lord! Do not send your blessings on this town. Allah accepted Prophet Idris (A) prayer and also punished the king. However, the kingdom passed on to another cruel ruler. Twenty years passed and not a drop of rain had fallen on the town. The people realised their mistake and prayed to Allah for forgiveness. Prophet Idris (A) returned to them and prayed to Allah to end the drought. Prophet Idris (A) had the love and respect of all his people. Allah raised him to the heavans where he is alive even today. MORAL BOX If you want something in life you have to work for it and not cheat to get it. If you cause harm to someone, then one day someone will cause harm to you as well. TOPIC 14: PROPHET ISA: Prophet Isa s mother = Bibi Maryam He had no father. When Prophet Isa was 30 years old, he got the order of Allah to start his mission and the Divine Book, Injil, was revealed to him. He too could perform miracles like: - make a dead person alive again - make a blind person see again - curing illnesses These miracles made the Jew believe in him and others became his enemies. He chose 12 people from his followers and taught them from the Injil, so that they could travel and teach others. The people who hated him, tried to kill him. They gave, Yahuda, one of his followers, 30 pieces of silver to tell them which house Prophet Isa was in. They wanted to nail him to a cross and kill him. At this time, Allah raised Prophet Isa to the heavens to keep him safe. In the meantime, Yahuda went to his house but found it empty. While he was there, Allah changed his face to look like Prophet Isa s. When he came out of the house to tell the enemies that the house was empty, they grabbed him and took him away. Although he told them that he wasn t Prophet Isa, they wouldn t believe him and he was crucified instead. Today the Jews and Christians believe that Prophet Isa died on the cross. When our 12 th Imam (A) re-appears, Prophet Isa will come down from the heavens and pray behind him. Prophet Muhammad (S) Tareekh Page 4.39 www.madressa.net
