EVENSONG & SERMON SING ALONG 501 Through All The Changing Scenes Of Life Through all the changing scenes of life, in trouble and in joy, The praises of my God shall still my heart and tongue employ. O magnify the Lord with me, exalt the scared name; When in distress to heaven I called, God to my rescue came. The guardian hosts encamp around the dwellings of the just; Deliverance they provide to all who in God s shelter trust. O make but trial of God s love; experience will decide How blest and favoured are they all who in this love confide. Fear God, you saints, and you will then have nothing else to fear; Let service be your life s delight; your wants shall be his care. To Father, Son and Spirit blest, the God whom we adore Be glory, as it was, is now, and shall be evermore. As The Deer pants For The Water (Insert) As the deer panteth for the water, so my soul longeth after Thee. You alone are my heart s desire, and I long to worship Thee. Refrain You alone are my strength, my shield; to you alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart s desire, and I long to worship Thee. You re my friend and you are my brother, even though You are a King. I love You more than any other, so much more than anything. I want You more than gold or silver, only You can satisfy, You alone are the real joy giver, and the apple of my eye. 418 Draw The Circle Wide Refrain Draw the circle wide. Draw it wider still. Let this be our song, no one stands alone, Standing side by side, draw the circle wide. God the still point of the circle, round whom all creation turns; Nothing lost, but held forever, in God s gracious arms. Refrain 3

Let our hearts touch far horizons, so encompass great and small; Let our loving know no borders, faithful to God s call. Refrain Let the dreams we dream be larger, that we ve ever dreamed before; Let the dream of Christ be in us, open every door. Refrain Opening Sentence O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: let the whole earth stand in awe of him. Psalm 96. 9. Processional Hymn 486 Love Divine, All Loves Excelling Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven to earth come down, Fix in us thy humble dwelling, all thy faithful mercies crown. Jesus, thou art all compassion, pure, unbounded love thou art; Visit us with thy salvation, enter every trembling heart. Come, almighty to deliver; let us all thy grace receive; Suddenly return, and never, never more thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above, Pray, and praise thee, without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love. Finish, then, thy new creation; pure and spotless let us be; Let us see thy great salvation. Perfectly restored in thee. Changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place, Till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love and praise. A Greeting of Peace Officiant: We are the Body of Christ. By the one Spirit we were all baptized into one Body. All: Let us then pursue the things that make for peace and build up the common life. Officiant: The Peace of the Lord be always with you. All: And also with you. Please greet one another with a sign of peace. Hymn 354 Come, Thou Font Come, Thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing Thy grace. Streams of mercy, never ceasing, calls for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above; O the vast, the boundless treasure, of my God s unchanging love. 4

Here I make faith s affirmation: thus far by thy help I ve come, And I hope, by thy compassion, safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, wand ring from the fold of God; He, to rescue me from danger, interposed His precious blood. O to grace how great a debtor daily I m constrained to be! Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wand ring heart to Thee: Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; Here s my heart, O take and seal it; seal it for Thy courts above. The service continues on Page 20 of the Book of Common Prayer. Minister: O Lord, open thou our lips; People: And our mouth shall show forth thy praise. Minister: O God, make speed to save us; People: O Lord, make haste to help us. Minister: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; People: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Minister: Praise ye the Lord; People: The Lord s Name be praised. PSALM 99: 1-2, 9-16 Refrain: He shall give his angels charge over you. 1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, abides under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 He shall say to the Lord, You are my refuge and my stronghold, my God in whom I put my trust. 9 Because you have made the Lord your refuge, and the Most High your habitation. 10 There shall no evil happen to you, neither shall any plague come near your dwelling. 11 For he shall give his angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. 12 They shall bear you in their hands, lest you dash your foot against a stone. 13 You shall tread upon the lion and adder; you shall trample the young lion and the serpent under your feet. 5

14 Because he is bound to me in love, therefore will I deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. 15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I am with him in trouble; I will rescue him and bring him to honour. 16 With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation. The First Reading: Deuteronomy 6:1-9 Now this is the commandment the statutes and the ordinances that the Lord your God charged me to teach you to observe in the land that you are about to cross into and occupy, so that you and your children and your children s children may fear the Lord your God all the days of your life, and keep all his decrees and his commandments that I am commanding you, so that your days may be long. Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe them diligently, so that it may go well with you, and so that you may multiply greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has promised you. Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. Reader: The Word of the Lord All: Thanks be to God Office Hymn 31 Saviour, Again To Thy Dear Name Savior, again to thy dear Name we raise With one accord our parting hymn of praise; We stand to bless thee ere our worship cease; Then, lowly kneeling, wait thy word of peace. Grant us thy peace upon our homeward way; With thee began, with thee shall end the day. Guard thou the lips from sin, the hearts from shame, That in this house have called upon thy Name. Grant us thy peace, Lord, through the coming night; Turn thou for us its darkness into light; From harm and danger keep thy children free, For dark and light are both alike to thee. 6

Grant us thy peace throughout our earthly life; Our balm in sorrow, and our stay in strife. Then, when thy voice shall bid our conflict cease, Call us, O Lord, to thine eternal peace. Magnificat (St. Luke 1:46-55) - Page 21 My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel; As he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The Second Reading: Mark 12:28-34 One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, he asked him, Which commandment is the first of all? Jesus answered, The first is, Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this, You shall love your neighbour as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. Then the scribe said to him, You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that he is one, and besides him there is no other ; and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love one s neighbour as oneself, this is much more important than all whole burnt-offerings and sacrifices. When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, 7

he said to him, You are not far from the kingdom of God. After that no one dared to ask him any question. Reader: The Word of the Lord All: Thanks be to God Nunc Dimittis (St. Luke 2:29-32) - Page 22 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The Apostles Creed All: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come again to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Catholic Church; The Communion of Saints, The Forgiveness of sins; The Resurrection of the body, and the Life everlasting. Amen. After the Creed, the Minister continues Minister: The Lord be with you; People: And with thy spirit. Minister: Let us pray. (all kneel) People: Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. 8

Minister: O Lord, show thy mercy upon us; People: And grant us thy salvation. Minister: O Lord, save the Queen; People: And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Minister: Endue thy Ministers with righteousness; People: And make thy chosen people joyful. Minister: O Lord, save thy people; People: And bless thine inheritance. Minister: Give peace in our time, O Lord; People: And evermore mightily defend us; Minister: O God, make clean our hearts within us; People: And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. The Collect of the Day O Lord, who for our sake didst fast forty days and forty nights: Give us grace to use such abstinence, that, our flesh being subdued to the Spirit, we may ever obey thy godly motions in righteousness and true holiness, to thy honour and glory; who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. People: Amen. The Collect for Peace O God, from who all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that our heart may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. People: Amen The Collect for Aid Against All Perils Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. People: Amen. A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom Minister: Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications unto thee; and dost promise that when 9

two or three are gathered together in thy Name thou wilt grant their requests: Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants, as may be most expedient for them; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. People: Amen The Grace Minister: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. People: Amen Anthem Praise God from Whom Hymn before Sermon: My Jesus, I Love Thee My Jesus, I love Thee; I know Thou art mine. For Thee all the follies of sin I resign. My gracious Redeemer, my Savior art Thou; If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, tis now. I love Thee because Thou hast first lovèd me And purchased my pardon on Calvary s tree. I love Thee for wearing the thorns on Thy brow: If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, tis now. I ll love Thee in life, I will love Thee in death And praise Thee as long as Thou lendest me breath. And say when the death dew lies cold on my brow, If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, tis now. In mansions of glory and endless delight, I ll ever adore Thee in heaven so bright. I ll sing with the glittering crown on my brow, If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, tis now. Sermon What does it mean to love God? Offertory Hymn 455 Dear God, Compassionate and Kind Dear God, compassionate and kind, forgive our foolish ways! Reclothe us in our rightful mind; in purer lives Thy service find, In deeper reverence, praise, in deeper reverence, praise. 10

In simple trust like theirs who heard, beside the Syrian sea, The gracious calling of the Lord, let us, like them, without a word, Rise up and follow Thee. Rise up and follow Thee! O Sabbath rest by Galilee! O calm of hills above, Where Jesus knelt to share with thee the silence of eternity, Interpreted by love, interpreted by love! Drop Thy still dews of quietness till all our strivings cease. Take from our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess The beauty of Thy peace, the beauty of Thy peace. Breathe through the heats of our desire Thy coolness and Thy balm. Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; speak thro the earthquake, wind and fire, O still small voice of calm, O still small voice of calm. Thanksgiving & Closing Prayers Officiant: All things come from you, O Lord, and of thine own we give you. Blessed be God for ever and ever. People: Amen. Officiant: God our refuge and our strength, receive all we offer you this day, and through the death and resurrection of your Son transform us to his likeness. We ask this in his name. People: Amen. The Blessing Officiant: May the God of mercy transform you by his grace, and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. People: Amen. Recessional Hymn 29 The Day Thou Gavest The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended, The darkness falls at thy behest. To thee our morning hymns ascended; Thy praise shall sanctify our rest. We thank thee that thy Church, unsleeping While earth rolls onward into light, Through all the world her watch is keeping, And rests not now by day nor night. 11

As o'er each continent and island The dawn leads on another day, The voice of prayer is never silent, Nor dies the strain of praise away. The sun that bids us rest is waking The faithful 'neath the western sky, And hour by hour fresh lips are making Thy wondrous doings heard on high. So be it, Lord! Thy throne shall never, Like earth's proud empires, pass away; Thy kingdom stands, and grows for ever, Till all thy creatures own thy sway. Minister: This act of worship is ended! Our service in the world continues! Let us go in peace, to love and serve the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. 12
