Welcome to God s House today!!! A special welcome to visitors and guests; we are pleased that you have joined us today! If you have no church family and if we can be of any help to you, please speak with the pastor after the service. We invite all guests to sign the Guest Register. We pray you will feel God s love for you and be empowered to live as God s child this week. Today s Focus - Jesus said Rise and go your way; your faith has saved you. Rise and go. No sweeter words had ever been spoken to this Samaritan leper. He as free. Cleansed and free from his leprosy. Forgiven and free from his sin. He was free to go How sweet and welcome were those words! Rise and go. We take that for granted, because we do it everyday. We rise and go to work or school, run errands. This morning you arose and came to church Rise and go. Perhaps we do take that for granted. But remember who you are, O fellow lepers! Remember who you are without God and His Word. Remember the misery you would still be in if Christ had not set you free. Remember that apart from Him, you could not rise and go. But your Savior has come to you, and had mercy on you. He is here for you, just a real as that day on the border of Samaria and Galilee. Children are welcome in worship! If childcare is needed, an unattended nursery is open during worship services. It is located across from the restrooms next to the Church Offices. We also have quiet activity toys for children s use during worship on the ushers counter in the back. On Holy Communion Sundays, children are also welcome to come with you where they will receive a blessing. Is there something you d like us to pray for today? Yellow Prayer Request cards are in each pew. Please hand your request to an usher before the service or during the offering. They will give them to the pastor to include in the prayers for today. The Lord s Supper is celebrated on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month. We joyfully share our conviction that this is The Lord's Table. We receive the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, together with the bread and wine in a manner our human reason cannot understand. (Real Presence) By communing together with our Lord: - we express a common belief that Jesus is in truth the Son of God and Son of Man, - that Jesus is our Savior and only way for salvation; - That Jesus truly offers us His Body and Blood in a mysterious yet real way - that Christ's sacrificial death assures us of complete forgiveness of our sins; - and that God is strengthening us in this Sacrament to live a more godly life and to amend with the help of the Holy Spirit, those areas not in conformity with God s will. We declare these statements because it is our concern for people to not be hypocritical between their faith and practice. Those who share these convictions are welcome to come and celebrate the blessings of God's Table at the Altar. Persons unable to approach the Altar may be communed in the pew, please notify the Pastor or Elder if you wish this service. The white wine in the center of the tray is denatured (alcohol removed) 2

21 st SUNDAY after PENTECOST AS WE GATHER Today we meet 10 lepers who come to Jesus for healing. I want you to notice something about these men. They all exhibit a measure of faith. They do not argue with Jesus that He must touch them the way He had touched a leper in Luke 5. They all exhibited faith. Their faith was demonstrated by the fact that they went to show themselves to the priests. You wouldn t go to the priest unless you were already healed, they weren t (yet). They walked by faith, not by sight. What happens next is a lesson for us all. THE LORD COMES TO US IN HIS WORD OLD TESTAMENT READING Ruth 1:1-19a ESV People are united in their relationships by their connections. In the days when the judges ruled there was a famine in the land, and a man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he and his wife and his two sons. The name of the man was Elimelech and the name of his wife Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion. They were from Bethlehem in Judah. They went into the country of Moab and remained there. But Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died, and she was left with her two sons. These took Moabite wives; the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth. They lived there about ten years, and both Mahlon and Chilion died, so that the woman was left without her two sons and her husband. So Naomi arose with her daughters-in-law to return from the country of Moab, for she had heard in the fields of Moab that the LORD had visited His people and given them food. So she set out from the place where she was with her two daughters-in-law, and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah. But Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, Go, return each of you to her mother's house. May the LORD deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me. The LORD grant that you may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband! Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voices and wept. Then they said to her, No, we will return with you to your people. But Naomi said, Turn back, my daughters; why will you go with me? Have I yet sons in my womb that they may become your husbands? Turn back, my daughters; go your way, for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say I have hope, even if I should have a husband this night and should bear sons, would you therefore wait till they were grown? Would you therefore refrain from marrying? No, my daughters, for it is exceedingly bitter to me for your sake that the hand of the LORD has gone out against me. Then they lifted up their voices and wept again. And Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her. Then Naomi said to Ruth, See, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods; return after your sister-in-law. But Ruth said, Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. May the LORD do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you. And when Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she said no more. So the two of them went on until they came to Bethlehem. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God! 6

EPISTLE READING 2 Timothy 2:1-13 ESV Paul encourages Timothy to persevere in the cause of Jesus Christ You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything. Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound! Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with Him, we will also live with Him; if we endure, we will also reign with Him; if we deny Him, He also will deny us; if we are faithless, He remains faithful for He cannot deny Himself. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God! GOSPEL ANTHEM Thy Word Grant/Smith Refrain: Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path When I feel afraid, think I ve lost my way, Still You re there right beside me. And nothing will I fear as long as You are near, Please be near me to the end. Refrain I will not forget Your love for me, and yet, My heart forever is wandering. Jesus be my guide and hold me to Your side, And I will love you to the end. Refrain 1984 Meadowgreen Music Company,Word Music, LLC CCLI# 14301. HOLY GOSPEL READING Luke 17:11-19 ESV When we give thanks we acknowledge the real source of our blessings On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. And as He entered a village, He was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices, saying, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us." When He saw them He said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when He saw that He was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and He fell on His face at 7

Jesus feet, giving Him thanks. Now He was a Samaritan. Then Jesus answered, "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" And He said to him, "Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well." P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. CONFESSION OF FAITH THE APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. SONG OF THE DAY Open our Eyes Lord Open our eyes Lord, we want to see Jesus, To reach out and touch Him And say that we love Him. Open our ears, Lord, Help us to listen Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus. Open our eyes, Lord, We want to see Jesus, In faces of others, Our sisters and brothers. C: Amen CLOSING SONG I, The Lord of Sea and Sky Dan Schutte Choir will sing the verse, the Congregation joins in with the Chorus I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard My people cry. All who dwell in dark and sin, My hand will save. I who make the stars of night, I will make their dark-ness bright. Who will bear My light to them? Whom shall I send? CHORUS: Here I am, Lord. Is it I Lord? I have heard You calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if You lead me. I will hold Your people in my heart. 10

I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne My people s pain. I have wept for love of them. They turn a-way. I will break their hearts of stone, Give them hearts for love a-lone. I will speak My word to them. Whom shall I send? CHORUS: Here I am, Lord. Is it I Lord? I have heard You calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if You lead me. I will hold Your people in my heart. I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame, I will set a feast for them, My hand will save. Fin-est bread I will pro-vide, Till their hearts be sat-is-fied. I will give my life to them. Whom shall I send? CHORUS: Here I am, Lord. Is it I Lord? I have heard You calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if You lead me.
