CHALICE FOR VOCATIONS PROGRAM As you might be aware, due to the sickness of Frank Gaglione (who used to assign the chalice to families) there has been an interruption in the program. Please keep Frank in your prayers. We would like to continue to assign the chalice to families so they can pray for an increase in vocations for the priesthood. Every week a family that signed up is called forward during the Mass (whichever they attend) and is presented with the Chalice and a folder with prayers to pray for an increase in vocations. You may place the Chalice on your dinner table, light the candles, and pray as a family before dinner. We welcome families of all sizes, including those who are living alone. To sign up, please contact the rectory at 914-737-4705 to be put on the Chalice program list. If you have already been part of this program and wish to continue, please contact the rectory again as the list has been misplaced. Thank you! EPIPHANY HOME BLESSING Please check the flyer on blessing our homes and those who live and visit our houses. It is an invitation for Jesus to be a daily guest in our home, our comings and goings, our conversations, our work and play, our joys and sorrows. A traditional way of doing this is to use chalk to write above the home s entrance, 20 + C + M + B + 17. The letters, C, M, B have two meanings. They are initials of the traditional names of the three magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. They also abbreviate the Latin words Christus Mansionem Benedicat, May Christ bless the home. The + signs represent the cross and 2017 is the year. COMMUNION BREAKFAST The Knights of Columbus will be hosting a Communion Breakfast in Dillon Hall after the 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Masses today. All are welcome to attend this free event. Come join us for some food and fellowship. SECOND COLLECTION TODAY A second collection will be taken today for Communications/Catholic University. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS MEETING The Knights of Columbus will hold their officers meeting on Monday, January 9, 2017, at 7:30 p.m. COLUMBIETTE NEWS The NY Blood Center and the Columbiettes would like to wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year. Our first 2017 Blood Drive will be held on Sunday, January 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. We have been informed that we are once again in an Emergency Blood shortage. At this time of year, when bills are arriving for Christmas gifts we bought, wouldn t it be nice to give a gift that will cost us absolutely nothing? Giving blood doesn t cost you a single penny, but it is priceless to those who receive this life-giving gift. There are so many people in our parish and our surrounding communities who can use this wonderful and life-saving gift. Thank you for your generosity.
JANUARY 8, 2017 ST. COLUMBANUS CHURCH_ #481/PAGE 4 I would like to thank everyone for their gifts this Christmas and especially for the gifts of your prayers. I have finished my chemotherapy up here in Cortlandt Manor and will be preparing for one or two stem cell transplants at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan during the next month or two. I hope to be finished with all treatments by the end of February. How long the recovery from this more aggressive treatment will be I don t know at this time. Please keep the prayers coming! I know they are working. I pray for you all daily and at Sunday Mass. I hope everyone had a peaceful New Year as we honored our Blessed Mother on her Solemnity, Mary Mother of God. Because Christmas, and therefore The Solemnity of Mary fall on a Sunday, the Feast of the Epiphany is today. Normally the Sunday between Christmas and January 1 st is the Feast of the Holy Family. But when that happens, the Feast of the Holy Family is on December 30. I would recommend you take a look at the readings for the Holy Family to see how Jesus was the center of the Holy Family and all members Jesus, Mary, and Joseph were obedient to doing God s will. They are the perfect example of family life that all families should imitate. The Epiphany of our Lord is when our Lord Jesus Christ as messiah and Savior was made manifest to the whole world in the persons of the three Magi from the East. This Feast was traditionally celebrated on the 6 th of January, as it still is in the Eastern Church, and is often called Little Christmas. In fact, in the east the Epiphany is a bigger feast than Christmas.
