February 17, 2013 YOU ARE PETER I must admit that like almost everybody else I was flabbergasted on Monday morning. My Iphone sounded one of its numerous alerts and I looked to see that CNN was saying the Pope was resigning. Immediately I thought it was some cruel joke or perhaps a hoax. Intrigued, I went to the New York Times and there read the statement of the resignation of the Holy Father and then I knew it was true. Of course, my studies in Church History had taught me that other popes had resigned Celestine V stood out in my mind, but it never occurred to me that I would see such a thing in my lifetime. The sadness and struggle of the illness of Blessed John Paul II had more or less convinced me that there would be no resignation of a modern pope. It just shows how wrong you can be! These next few weeks will be a fantastic learning and religious experience. Catholics and non- Catholics will hang on every word from Rome especially the gossip about whom the cardinals might elect as the next Holy Father. You will hear that he is too young or too old, too liberal or too conservative. You will hear that it could never be an American and it may be time for another Italian or maybe an African. You will hear that the next pope will go to World Youth Day. He most probably will but he doesn t have to. It is his call-he will be the Pope. The Vicar of Christ does not answer to any committee of cardinals or bishops. It is true that he consults them frequently and respects their competence and judgment. In the end, however, the Holy Father enjoys universal jurisdiction and supreme power in the Catholic Church. The Pope answers to God. He is, of course, like all of us, subject to the law of God. Thanks to Msgr Jim Vlaun and Telecare I was able to watch the Holy Father s last scheduled Mass at St. Peter s. It was a very powerful and emotional experience. The people applauded over and over again and the applause was sustained and heartfelt. You could see the faith, prayer and sadness in the eyes of nuns, priests and laypeople as they said goodbye to the Holy Father. Just looking at them you could see that they were brokenhearted but they understood. Benedict XVI in his own conscience and before God felt that he could no longer carry on the Petrine ministry. It wasn t that he didn t want to be Peter, it was he honestly felt that he couldn t fulfill the office. (For the sake of the Catholic Church, he decided to renounce the Throne of St. Peter. In the warm and loving eyes of Benedict you saw the love and compassion of Christ for the People of God, the Church. It was that overflowing love that caused Benedict to make such an extraordinary decision for the welfare of Holy Church.) At the conclusion of the Mass, there was a short but beautiful tribute given by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone. He said: The Eucharist is a thanksgiving to God. Tonight, we want to thank the Lord for the path that the whole Church has walked under the guidance of Your Holiness and we want to tell you from the depths of our heart, with great affection, emotion and admiration: thank you for giving us the shining example of a simple and humble worker in the vineyard of the Lord, a worker, however, who knew at all times how to do that which is most important: to bring God to men and to bring men to God. The words of Cardinal Bertone were so true. The Pope knew what was really important. Everything is about God and His love for us and the love we should have for Him. Other things have a limited importance. The love of God is forever. Loving God is what matters. And then Benedict blessed the people in Latin. The Sistine Choir sang a closing hymn to Our Lady and then broke into the magnificent Tu es Petrus You are Peter and the Holy Father left St. Peter s (presumably) for the last time as Pope and walked into history. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald

LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA Are we prepared to live a special Lent? This Lent is special because it s the Year of Faith, and because we are about the New Evangelization. We need to be aware every day of these special circumstances and work toward growth in faith during this year of grace. We need to plan during these forty days how to witness our faith, how to encourage our family and friends to come back to the Sacraments. In Lent we imitate Jesus Christ, who spent forty days fasting in the desert, as He prepared to start the world s first Evangelization. Did Jesus need to do that? Of course not. He, God all-powerful and all-knowing, He did it to teach us how to purify ourselves and how to follow Him. Lent s liturgy instructs us, gives us the grace to do what God is asking us to do, the Church teaches us all year long, but it is intensified during Lent. Let s plan how to spend these precious forty days, in prayer, in sacrifice, in giving. Do not let this Lent be wasted, do not let it be less than it can be, less than God wants it to be. Let s take the grace God is offering us. This Lent you and I have a special way to work towards our plan, described above. In our kiosk at the church s entrance, we have CDs to listen to and become inspired and closer to Jesus and His Passion. This week we have a new one God of My Past, God of My Future, a challenge to let God be God in all aspects of life. It is a CD relevant to young people, so try to give it to the young adults in your life. I ask you to stop by the kiosk and pick up a CD or two. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you to select the titles, and after you listen to them GIVEN THEM AWAY. CHURCH ENVELOPES: Many questions have been presented to the staff at the Rectory office regarding church envelopes. So, I thought it would be helpful to answer some of these questions. Each mailing of envelopes now covers two months instead of the once a month mailing in previous years. I submit an updated list of parishioners to the envelope company every two months. This list reflects the names of new parishioners, change of addresses/corrections and families who have left our parish. When notifying the Rectory of changes, please realize that this change takes at least one month to go into effect. In the meantime, please use the envelopes in the pews or feel free to use another envelope and include your name or envelope number if you know it. PLEASE NOTE: The Parish Social Ministry office will be closed this Monday, February 18 th and will re-open on Tuesday, February 19th. We can be reached at (516) 746-6585 x9408 or x9410.
