HOLY TRINITY CAPUCHIN PROVINCE KARNATAKA, INDIA Saccidananda, Capuchin Provincialate, P.B.No.1060, Rajajinagar, Bangalore 560 010 PC 09/11 K.101.11 THE EUCHARIST AND THE ROLE OF THE SPIRIT (Admonition no. 1) T he first admonition of St. Francis of Assisi is on the subject of Eucharist and how a friar minor should approach the exalted mystery of the Body and Blood of Christ. The argument of Francis is that Eucharist is a reality which has to be grasped and approached only through the presence of the Spirit. The spiritual realities basically transcend the tangible and sensible, and meaningless from empirical point of view. Hence he refers to the mystery of God himself, who lives in accessible light (1 Tim 6:16), whom no one has seen (Jn 1:18) and only in the Spirit we can experience Him as divine and holy. Even the incarnation is meaningful only for those who are empowered by the Sprit. Those who see and believe according to the Spirit can see and believe Jesus as the Son of God. From rational point of view Jesus is merely a human person like any other human being in the world. The same argument is continued regarding the presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. The bread and wine is a sacred reality, sanctified by the words of the Lord only for those who see and believe according to the Spirit. Similarly the words of Jesus Christ, He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life (Jn 6.55) are to be accepted in faith. Those who do not welcome and possess the Spirit, become dull of heart; those whose heart is hardened by reasoning, cannot recognize the truth and believe in the Son of God. (Jn 9: 35). Francis then admires the humility of Son of God who deigns to come down on the altar in the form of bread and wine every time the priest celebrates Eucharist. As the disciples saw Jesus in flesh but believed and accepted him as the 1

Son of God, so now we see the bread and wine but believe them to be the most holy Body and Blood living and true. A friar minor should learn to see the mysteries of faith according to the Spirit. The Spirit of God should pervade his life and enlighten his intellect and orientate his reasoning. Only then can the Eucharist be a source of life and spring of energy and motivation to be a true witness of the Gospel in the world. Provincial Communications 2 -Vincent G.Furtado OFM Cap. 1.
