www.shrinechurch.com Shrine Herald July 4, 2010 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Welcome This weekend we welcome our two new associate pastors, Father Anthony Camilleri and Father Beto Espinoza. Both are priests of the Archdiocese of Detroit. Father Lang and I are pleased to welcome them to their new home here at the National Shrine. They are both looking forward to becoming deeply involved in the faith life of the parish. Father Bogusław Migut also joined us this past week. Father will be with us throughout the month of July. We are happy to have him with us. He is both a gentleman and a scholar, adding much to our household and to the parish as well. July What happened to the month of June? It came and went so quickly. This weekend we already celebrate Independence Day. It is a good time for us to commit ourselves once again to the principals of freedom, liberty, and justice for all people. Let us pray for our great nation, that God will sanctify our country, protect our military, make us agents of peace and keep us always thankful for the gift of freedom. We pray that we may always remain true to the principles laid down by the founders of our nation and remain united under God. Since Monday, July 5, is the legal observance of the holiday, there will be one Mass at 9 am rather than the normal two masses. The regular schedule will resume on Tuesday. We wish everyone a safe, enjoyable, and restful celebration of the Fourth of July weekend. We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. continued on page 3... Royal Oak, MI Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Happy Fourth of July Holiday! Due to the holiday, the rectory offices will be closed on Monday, July 5. Please make a note of this. In addition, there will only be one morning Mass on Monday, July 5 at 9 am.

Thanks again to those of you who have responded and let s surpass our goal with the remaining parish member contributions. Thank you. Healing Mass Vocations 2010 On Tuesday, July 13, there will be a Healing Mass at the Church of the Transfiguration, located at 25225 Code Rd., in Southfield. www.shrinechurch.com July 4, 2010 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... Revised Roman Missal A little over a year from now, in the fall of 2011, the revised English version of the Roman Missal will be introduced for common use in the English speaking world. Is the Mass changing? No it is not. The Latin Roman Missal that is the base for all other translations remains basically unchanged. There are additions made for the saints who have been canonized since the original edition in 1985, and the inclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer for Various Needs and Occasions. The Mass is not changing, and the third edition of the Roman Missal is not a new book. So why will the Mass sound different and why will we be using different words than we have now? The principles for the translation of the Latin text have changed. In 1969 rules were established for translation using the principle of dynamic equivalence that is the principle that when translating from one language to another the meaning of the original text should be emphasized rather than the word for word translation. In 2002, a year after Pope John Paul II introduced the third edition of the Roman Missal; the Congregation for the Divine Worship issued new instructions for the translation of the texts. They called for the translation of the texts to follow the principle of formal equivalency that when translating from one language to another, the word-for-word translation of the original text should be emphasized, rather than the meaning of the text. Personally, I believe this is much more accurate and brings us closer to the mystery of the Eucharist as God intends and not some meaning that we have ascribed to the Mass. It will take some getting used to. The end result will be an improvement. We have a year to prepare and will continually address the subject in a variety of ways. Rosie, Carlito & Kodiak As I mentioned last week, Rosie taught Kodi how to swim. She was a very good and patient teacher. First she enticed Kodi into the water. She did not force him. She just demonstrated how much fun she was having in the water. Eventually, he couldn t stand it any longer and got off the dock into the shallow water. Wow, it was fun. He jumped around splashing the water having a really good time. Once he was comfortable. Rosie approached him with her tennis ball. She would let him play with it and then take it back, each time going a little further into the water. Then it happened. All of a sudden, Kodi realized that his feet were no longer touching the bottom. He was swimming. It was great. Now he was swimming with Rosie. Rosie is pretty smart. She can easily out swim Kodi anytime, leaving him in her wake. She taught him how not to drown, but not how to out swim a pro. www.shrinechurch.com July 4, 2010 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "In imitation of the sacrificial Victim of Calvary and of the Mass, who in Heaven ever pleads for us, we must, with a constancy that knows "no change, nor shadow of alteration," strive after the perfection of sanctity: Crucifixion with Christ." - Fr. John Kane, Transforming Your Life through the Eucharist How does one pray for an hour in adoration? Here are some suggestions offered by the Maronite Monks of Adoration: 1. Slowly read the Sacred Scripture until something hits you. Then listen. 2. Say the Holy Rosary. 3. Look at the Good God, and let Him look at you. 4. See the Blessed Virgin kneeling next to you, adoring her Son and praying with you. 5. Realize that your Holy Guardian Angel is with you. Ask him to coach you in holiness. 6. See our Lord in His Passion...stand there, with Him, as Our Lady does. 7. Talk to Him heart to Heart. 8. Pray for vocations. 9. Sing a song to Him in your heart. 10. Tell Him what you are afraid of. Then listen. Open hours: Monday, 1 am; Tuesday, 2 am; Thursday, 11 am, noon, and 2 pm; Saturday, 4 pm. Partners are desired for the following hours: Sunday, 10 am, 2, 5, and 6 pm; Monday, 5 and 10 am; Thursday, 7, 10, 11 am and 2 pm; Friday, 9 and 11 am and 4 pm; the 1 pm hour on Sunday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday; and the 7 pm hour on Sunday. We live in a country where we are blessed with many freedoms and we fight around the world to protect the freedoms of others. Yet, so many people in this country are stripped of the basic right to live every day. Will you fight for them? They are the unborn babies in danger of abortion, they are the embryos stored in labs waiting to be destroyed for their stem cells, they are the disabled and terminally ill who are made to feel they are inconvenient and their suffering has no meaning, they are the elderly who are told they are putting a strain on the health care system. Someday, they may be you. The history of our country has been forever changed by those who have not been given the right to live or whose life has been cut short. What do you suppose our forefathers would say about giving people the right to choose yet depriving others the right to live? Are we really independent and free? The Manhattan Declaration: The Global Christian Community As a Christian community, it is important to remember our brothers and sisters of all ages and of all nations, not just those close to home. Around the globe, cases of genocide and ethnic cleansing, the abandonment of the aged, racial oppression and discrimination, and the persecution of believers of all faiths, among other travesties, appeal to our Christian community s truly consistent ethic of love and life for all humans in all circumstances. The Manhattan Declaration was drafted to bring about a movement of Christians who will stand together alongside other men and women of goodwill to advance and defend the issues we hold dear. Detroit Archbishop Allen Vigneron encourages all faithful to learn more about the Declaration. To read it online, visit www.aodonline.org/manhattan. www.shrinechurch.com July 4, 2010 Page 7 Lending Library Finding God In Troubled Times: The Holy Spirit and Suffering by Richard J. Hauser, S.J. " In this reflective spirituality, informal in style and dotted with personal anecdotes, Hauser gently speaks to all Christians, suggesting that we can combine a spirituality of suffering with a theology of Christ, but only after we examine suffering as we find it in the Bible. He shows us the role that the Holy Spirit played for Jesus and Paul in their own suffering and reconciliation and helps us to understand a similar role of the Holy Spirit for our own lives. On this solid footing we can begin to tackle --in a personal way--the age old problem of understanding our loving God in the midst of our often painful and difficult world." (Section 8, Spirituality). Beginning with our common yearning for happiness, Rediscovering Catholicism, takes us on an adventure of lifechanging proportions by addressing some of the most important questions we face today both as individuals and as a Church. Are you happy? Do you really think you will find happiness where you are presently searching? Are you living an authentic life? Does your life lack meaning? Why are so many people experiencing depression today? What are your habits? How would you like your life to change? Is Jesus still relevant? Can the ancient traditions of Catholic spirituality help us to deal with the challenges of our modern lives? These sessions will be facilitated by Judy Maten and Vikki Jenkins. if you have one. A limited number of free books will be available. Please bring your copy of the book to this study, Please RSVP to vikkij@wideopenwest.com or call 248.549.1266 so that materials are prepared and ready for every participant. Consider joining us Tuesday evenings at 8 pm in the St. Thérèse Chapel. League of the Little Flower Devotions to St. Thérèse are held every second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 7 pm. Please join us on July 14 and 28 at 7 pm in the St. Thérèse Chapel, as we seek the intercession of St. Thérèse in offering up our petitions to Our Lord. Remembering her words, I will spend my heaven doing good on earth...i will let fall a shower of roses. Holy Hour for Vocations The Holy Hour for Vocations is held every Wednesday at 7 pm in the Stone Chapel at St. Hugo of the Hills. A Family Perspective The Gospel today is clear: Peace comes to a household if a peaceful person lives there. Peace starts with your ability to forgive, to correct without attacking, to accept the ways of others, and to recognize that a different opinion is not a personal rejection. It is actually your own peace which you give to your family. In today s Gospel the apostles were giddy with their new power ( Even the demons obey us! ). On this July 4th weekend, Jesus cautions that power is easily misused to dominate or manipulate others. True power is meant to free captives, especially those handcuffed by grief, chained to unresolved conflict, jailed inside a timid personality, or imprisoned by illness. - Bud Ozar NATIONAL SHRINE of the Little Flower Parish Office 2100 W. 12 Mile Road, Royal Oak, MI 48073-3910 Pastoral Staff Parish Main Number... 248.541.4122 Rev.
