Mt. Zion United Methodist Church M A R C H 2 0 1 6 N E W S L E T T E R Through the Windows Mt. Zion exists to + Love God + Communicate God s love to families and individuals in our community and beyond Dear Brother and Sisters in Christ, A Calling to Life As we journey thought this season of lent, we are called to "repent and believe in the gospel," remember the sacrifices of our Lord, and walk in our own wilderness for forty days as we approach the cross on Good Friday and the empty tomb on Easter morning. This holy season requires that we evaluate and reevaluate our own life and the manner in which we are called to faithfulness. Pastor Lay Leader Church Staff Rev. Olivia Poole- Reneau Carol Duke Church School Superintendent To be Filled Children s Ministries Coordinator Sara Banks Youth Director Nursery Director Pianist Organist Secretary Custodian Newsletter Editor Lucas Tribble Nikki Bonner Greg Waldrep Jeannie Boehmler Heather Wilmot Mary Canty Sarah Andrews As we approach Good Friday, I am reminded of our own brokenness. I wonder, "Why must Christ be broken so that we can be made whole?" What in Christ's brokenness offers me wholeness? However, I believe that is the message of Good Friday. We live in a broken world. We live in a world in which Christ must approach Golgotha (the place of the Cross) so that we may be redeemed. But, for those of us who are Easter people, the sorrow on Good Friday does not end the story of Christ's life. The story does not end in brokenness, death, or sorrow. Rather, the story of Christ's life end in life! The same is true in our own life. OUR story does not end in brokenness, death, or sorrow. For Easter people, death never triumphs. Life is always, always, always victorious! As Paul writes to those in Corinth, "For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When this perishable body puts on imperishability, and this mortal body puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will be fulfilled: Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.".continued on page 3...

Over the next few weeks we will continue our journey. We will watch as Jesus triumphantly enters into Jerusalem. We will witness as he washes the disciples feet. We will gather at the Lord's Table for Holy Communion as we remember is final meal before he is betrayed. We will listen to the words he speaks from the cross and meditate on his passion for each and every one of us. Finally on Easter Sunday, we will celebrate! We will laugh in the face of death knowing it does not have the final say and trusting that death is "swallowed up in victory." I invite you to join us during this holy season. Journey with Christ to the cross and then celebrate the victory on Easter Sunday. There is a place for you at Mount Zion. Also, if you are a member of Mount Zion, I challenge you to invite one new person, who does not have a church home, to come with you to worship during this Lenten and Easter season. We have story that the world needs to hear. The world needs the message of life, hope, and victory. All are welcome at Mount Zion United Methodist Church. Grace and Peace, Pastor Olivia

After meeting with our Children s Ministry Team, it has become heavy upon my heart that we must provide an opportunity for growth and discipleship for those that volunteer in this area. All women are invited to attend and become part of this covenant group, which will meet in my home. This women s covenant group will not be a bible study, but rather, an opportunity to share our joys and concerns with one another and faithfully pray for each other.
