Fifth Sunday of Lent March 18, 2018
Fast and Forgive! This year s Lenten theme has been to fast and forgive. We offered the phone sockets to help us remember to fast from Internet and social media while giving more time to prayer and charitable works. Part of reflecting on forgiveness is the fact that we need to have an encounter with Jesus in order to experience this in a real way. We know that all seven sacraments were instituted by Jesus as his way of really staying with us in his risen real presence. One of the hardest things about life is to give and receive forgiveness. One of our teen missionaries said the core part and the most challenging part of the Our Father is, forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. I shared this with friends recently at a gathering and he said, the harder thing is to forgive someone who hasn t asked to be forgiven. I had honestly never thought of that. Of course, God wants to forgive us. He is always willing, but we need to ask! The Sacrament of Reconciliation is the most important and central place we can ask Jesus for the Father s love. We just need to walk in! The hardest part about going to confession is going! Just getting up the courage and trusting God s grace can be hard, if we are not used to the sacrament. For Lent this year, we are offering confessions for an extended period of time on Saturday, March 24 th from 9:30AM to 2 PM at St. Veronica Chapel. The Eucharist will also be exposed on the altar for adoration. Why not stop by for a face-to-face or anonymous confession and spend some time with the Lord that day! Jesus is waiting to be asked for forgiveness. He wants to let the Father s mercy rain down upon you! Blessed Lent! Fr. Taillon
Rosary for Life at the Rhode Island State House Please join Servants of Christ for Life on Thursday, March 22nd at 3:00 PM for the annual "Rosary for Life" at the RI State House. Hear from local pro-life advocates and then join priests from around the Diocese who will lead the Joyful Mysteries of the Holy Rosary for an end to abortion. Please call Jean, if you can volunteer. Fifth Sunday of Lent We are now at the fifth Sunday in our Lenten preparation. The focus of the readings turns our attention from the rules we read about during the third week to a new covenant, a new relationship between God and all of us. Jeremiah tells us of God's intention to enter our very hearts, the center of our life. The psalm asks for a "clean heart" so that we are ready to receive the joy of salvation. Hebrews tells us that Jesus too prayed, was made perfect, and became the source of eternal salvation. In John, Jesus explains the contradiction that this new relationship involves: death becomes life. God gives everything to us, including forgiveness. God holds back nothing from us, giving us even the beloved Son, Jesus.
