PARABLES The Stories Jesus Told Jesus sometimes taught in parables because these vivid stories engage us in thought, emotion, and sensation. They impact us. They force us to go away and ponder, struggling with the meaning perhaps, feeling struck by the truthful and accurate perspective on life they offer. A parable compares something familiar to something unfamiliar. It helps us understand spiritual truth by using everyday objects and relationships. Parables compel us to discover truth, while at the same time concealing the truth from those too lazy or too stubborn to see it. To those who are honestly searching, the truth becomes clear. This series invites transformation as you discover fresh truth about Jesus, yourself, and others. The Bible is full of stories of men who sinned, of ministers who sinned, and were restored to ministry. Moses, David, Peter all sinned. But all repented. God then took them, remolded them, and used them in an even greater capacity. 2. > Jesus was trying to show us how great the love of God is! Especially those who have a great need for love: the lost, the frightened, the soiled, the losers and failures of this world the Broken! To get that point across, He told the story of a Shepherd who lost a sheep. This story of the lost sheep grew out of the stress created by the presence of sinners at Jesus dinner table. The Pharisees were offended. What right do you, a rabbi, have to eat with sinners? the scribes and Pharisees challenged Jesus. If God hates sinners, you should hate them, too! The Pharisees basic premise: God hates Sinners! Questions From The Parable of the LOST SHEEP 1.? > The answer is found in I Timothy 1:15. 2.? > The answer is in Romans 3:23. 3.? > The answer is at the heart of Gospel. See Romans 6:23 & Romans 5:8. This is bad news for religious legalists. 4.? > God is like a good father. God is a God of Grace. God loves all people, not just the good people. A God who loves the bad ones as much as He loves the good ones. The Crazy Love of God 1. > God is more worthy of trust than anyone else, yet for so many men question His love and doubt His care and provision because of their poor relationship with their dad (Matthew 7:11). 2. > Many men have difficulty connecting to God because of fear. God longs for us to respond to His extravagant, unending love: not with a cursory quiet time plagued by guilt, but with true love expressed through our lives. Fear in not the word we want to describe our relationship with God, but words like reverent intimacy. 3. > God knew you before He made you! Ephesians 2:10 tells us that we were created for a purpose! Your existence is not random, nor was it an accident. God know who He was creating, and He designed you for a specific purpose. See Jeremiah 1:6-10. 4. > The very fact that a holy, eternal, all-knowing, all-powerful, merciful, fair, and just God loves you and me is nothing short of astonishing. The wildest part is that Jesus doesn t have to love us. His being is utterly complete and perfect, apart from humanity. He doesn t need me or you. Yet He wants us, chooses us, even considers us His inheritance (Ephesians 1:18). The greatest knowledge you can ever have is knowing God treasure YOU! The holy Creator sees you as His glorious inheritance. 5.? > Our love for God always comes out of His love for US! 1. Do you love God who is everything, or do you just love everything He gives you? 2. Do you really know and believe that God loves you, individually and personally and intimately? 3. Do you see and know Him as Abba, Father? ACTION: Journal This! 1. How would you explain the difference between knowing God s love intellectually and knowing it intimately? 2. How does God demonstrate His love for you? 3. In light of your circumstances, what would it mean to believe and embrace God s love for you?

Luke 15:3-7- 3 So Jesus told them this story: 4 If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them gets lost, what will he do? Won t he leave the ninety-nine others in the wilderness and go to search for the one that is lost until he finds it? 5 And when he has found it, he will joyfully carry it home on his shoulders. 6 When he arrives, he will call together his friends and neighbors, saying, Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep. 7 In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven t strayed away! I Timothy 1:15-15 This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners and I am the worst of them all. Romans 3:23-23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God s glorious standard. Romans 6:23-23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. Bible Verses New Living Translation Romans 5:8-8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. Matthew 7:11-11 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him. Jeremiah 1:6-10- 6 O Sovereign LORD, I said, I can t speak for you! I m too young! 7 The LORD replied, Don t say, I m too young, for you must go wherever I send you and say whatever I tell you. 8 And don t be afraid of the people, for I will be with you and will protect you. I, the LORD, have spoken! 9 Then the LORD reached out and touched my mouth and said, Look, I have put my words in your mouth! 10 Today I appoint you to stand up against nations and kingdoms. Some you must uproot and tear down, destroy and overthrow. Others you must build up and plant. Love Rescue Me By U2 Come forth and speak to me Raise me up and don't let me fall No man is my enemy My own hands imprison me Many strangers have I met On the road to my regret Many lost who seek to find themselves in me They ask me to reveal The very thoughts they would conceal And the sun in the sky Makes a shadow of you and I Stretching out as the sun sinks in the sea I'm here without a name In the palace of my shame Said, love rescue me In the cold mirror of a glass I see my reflection pass See the dark shades of what I used to be See the purple of her eyes The scarlet of my lies Yea, though I walk In the valley of shadow Yea, I will fear no evil I have cursed thy rod and staff They no longer comfort me Sha la la...sha la la la Sha la la la...ha la la...
