This is yhh-ugggge, because nobody ese has ever realized what a pivotal role TBH normally plays in the national picture, the Donald said, taking time out for a McDonald s McDouble Cheeseburger, conveniently available just a stone s throw down 8 th Avenue in downtown Olympia. These are quite good, by the way, he said. And clean. I like that. I understand that the current president can be easily persuaded to join me, and Rabbi Goldbiz is always busy testifying before the Legislature or visiting Costco to buy office supplies. Excuuuse me, but that s no way to lead!! By the way, does it always rain like this out here? Returning to his previous train of thought, he added: What s more, the rest of the power structure hingest on blintzes..pfffffft!!...low-energy!! Need I say more? Veteran TBH poll watcher Elie Halburn said he thought The Donald might have a point. I just wish I had more energy to look into it, he said, yawning. (continued on page 99) New TBH Logo Faces Tsunami of Angry Words By Luke Fargo Short Schrift Typography Reporter Temple Beth Hatfiloh s new logo is upstream without a paddle, according to some TBHers who had planned to use similar but stronger artwork to brand community protection campaigns. The whole community is mis-portrayed by this clump of three odd-looking people huddling under a makeshift shelter while their town is being swept away by floodwaters, said Danny Badden. He said the new temple logo (upper left) was a pale shadow of the logo he wanted to design for the synagogue. Who are those little helpless munchkins in the TBH logo? Baddman said. In my logo, several brawny heroes would be carrying small children away from a bear attack at the same time they are putting out forest fires and rescuing the temple from earthquakes. TBH. Wake up. TBH President says Security Committee Flushes Out Hazards Dear TBHsters: A letter from Julie Frankenfurter Security and safety are under scrutiny again at Temple Beth Hatfiloh, and the good news is that the committee s investigation of risky situations is disclosing some problems not noted earlier the latest involving an epidemic of toilet seats being left in the upright position. One can only imagine the deep-seated inconvenience and additional positioning this has forced upon our members over the years. Happily, our committee is not just shedding light on a problem that has defied solutions. We are also working to develop an action plan that will reverse these trends and restore a better bottom line for the future. I ve asked the committee to study and report back on three possible paths upward: Put monitoring muscle into a TBH militia, a paramilitary arm of the facilities. Some unsettling decisions and consequences may result, and the committee is leery of the prospect that might flow from a flying squad of militia members bursting into TBH restrooms at random in an effort to surprise seat-uppers at their dirty work. Strategically placed cameras avoid this, but present other risks. A second option may be to replace TBH restrooms with Porta-Potties, which generally lack toilet seats in the first place, although this move might also simply replace one complaint with another. Finally, the committee is studying the possibility of automatic toilet seats that could spring back down to a politically correct position. As with the other potential solutions, this one comes with some blowback, including the possibility of entrapping an unwary bathroom visitor who may wander too close to a snapping toilet seat. As you can see, the committee is hard at work and already reporting progress in our never-ending efforts to keep the temple rising proudly to the challenges it faces. Good work to all! (continued on page 64) Blintzapalooza Committee Ponders Offer from The Donald By Luke Fargo Short Schrift Investigative Reporter TBH President Julie Frankenfurter is refereeing secret and delicate negotiations between the campaign of presidential candidate Donald Trump, who sees the TBH presidency as a stepping stone along his bid for the White House this year, the Short Schrift has learned. What s more, the other shadowy figure in the negotiations is none other than Oscar Pockets Soule, who has labored quietly for years to undercut the annual event s quality blintz and bagel sales, and to replace them with the improperly kneaded and cheap ingredients of mob-baked doughnuts from the East Coast. The Donald would be the go-between, reaping the TBH presidency in the bargain I have no comment and you can t print that, Soule told the Short Schrift. The Donald also declined comment, but he said some McDonald s burgers would probably improve the Blintzapalooza menu. Reportedly, President Frankinsense and the otherwise upright members of the Blintzapalooza Committee are not part of the deception and are being snookered by Soule and his cronies. Happily, younger members are stepping up to the challenge, and the sponsoring committee is retooling to turn a generational page. In the most obvious change, Hannah Lidman is in her third year of stepping into the role of committee chair, inheriting the mantel of her dad, three-time temple president Russ Lidman. The same process is taking place in other areas of the event, with younger members learning the ropes of different parts of the organization and assuming more responsibility, year by year. Or is it dor v dor? From humble beginnings, the Bagel Bakeoff was the brainchild of a handful of TBH members inspired by an appeal to their social conscience. What could they do as individual Jews to address community needs beyond the walls of the synagogue? It was a more innocent time in Olympia, one when Russ, Elie Halpern, Linda Blustein, and Oscar Soule couldn t get a freshly baked bagel without baking it themselves. So they motored to Seattle on a Sunday spring morning and returned with their cars stuffed with dozens of bagels and hung a Bagels and Books for Sale sign on the old temple s door. They sold out that first year and nearly every year since, but the real victory was the growing list of community charities that have benefited from their efforts. Over the years, many more TBH members became part of the growing Blintzapalooza family and like that original group of founders, they are recruiting replacements. Blintzapalooza 2016 (cont d) Nearly 30 years and $150,000 later, the event has morphed to a different Jewish delicacy, but the same kind of organizations benefit from the sales. And a corny cooking contest this year it s cheesecake provides some good humored entertainment for the customers. This year s Blintzapalooza beneficiaries include: ROOF Community Services: ROOF provides resources for children, youth and families in the Rochester area, including a food bank, after-school programs, emergency services, and seasonal projects. Money from Blintzapalooza will benefit the food bank. Emergency Overnight Shelter: This group of volunteers focuses on sheltering, providing mental health and emergency services, as well as warming centers on a daily basis in cold weather. This winter, the group is serving an average of 92 people at its warming centers and up to 150 a night at its overnight shelters. South Sound Parent to Parent: This organization provides a network of support, information, resources and referrals for children and adults with special needs, including educational workshops for parents and caregivers. Blintzapalooza funds will directly benefit the workshops. Blintzapalooza Bakeoff: Can your Cheesecake Measure Up? Join us for the annual Blintzapalooza bakeoff! This cheesecake competition is open to everyone. Awards designed by nationally-respected local artist Jean Mandeberg will again be presented to the top three cheesecake bakers by judges Congressman Denny Heck, local baker Mohammed El-Sokkary, and Olympia City Councilwoman Jessica Bateman. Please bring your cheesecake to Temple Beth Hatfiloh between 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 20. Unlike past Blintzapalooza bake-offs, the 2016 judges will be measuring cheesecakes in a single, allencompassing category. This means cheesecakes should be one to two inches high, dense, velvety smooth, made of creamy, rich, cream cheese and sour cream-based. This includes virtually any delicious white concoction, often on a graham cracker crust and usually with an unadorned top served in generous wedges; i.e. New York-style cheesecake. All competing desserts should have these general categories in common: A sweet dish of one or more layers made of soft fresh cheese, eggs and sugar served on a crust base. The cheese in cheesecake is typically cream cheese, Neufchatel, cottage cheese or ricotta, although other cheeses are used regionally. The body of the cheesecake is sweetened with sugar and may be flavored with many items from sweet to savory, depending on the culture of the baker. If there is a crust or base, it is made of crushed cookies, biscuits or crackers, or pastry or sponge cake. While some connoisseurs claim the top of the cheese cake should be barren, many decorate theirs with chocolate or fruit sauce, nuts, or whipped cream. Tikkun Olam Initiative: the Greening of our Community An update from Kim Adelson As you know, Tikkun Olam means to do acts of kindness that repair the world. One way we can all participate in this healing is to commit both as individuals and as a Temple to reducing our contribution to climate change and to work to mitigate its effects. To this end, the Tikkun Olam committee has agreed to partner with the Black Hills Audubon Society and participate in its For the Birds! campaign. Details can be found at blackhills-audubon.org. Family Life and Learning Director Catherine Carmel This month I wanted to write my whole article about embracing my upcoming crone status, seeing that I am turning 50 on March 9 th. I m so excited to be coming into an age of such wisdom and peace. It s strange knowing I have been around as long as Star Trek (the original TV series), Astroturf, and Twister. However, there is so much more to say about what is going on here at TBH! Our Youth Education Committee is up and running again and tackling questions about whether or not there is a better way to meet the educational needs of our kids. We are looking mostly at scheduling right now - looking for ways to include more intergenerational celebrations and making a monthly family Shabbat a more successful piece. We are going to try a 6:00 p.m. service followed by a 6:45 p.m. potluck dinner. Join us on March 18th for our first trial run! We define family as everyone who identifies with our community. This time of the year our Alim group leads the charge in the final tikkun olam projects of the year. Here s Bernie s take on how that is going. So we hope to see you for Shabbat service and dinner on the 18 th and Purim on the 23 rd. If you happen to be thinking about it on the 9 th, say a shehecheyanu with me for the blessing of reaching this transformative stage of life and if you d like to celebrate this golden anniversary with me, bring a potted daffodil to plant on the temple grounds. L Shalom, Alim consists of many outstanding students with amazing minds. This group is intelligent, well-mannered and thoughtful of others. They have done extremely well with their lessons this year. Each year, as part of the curriculum we learn about tikkun olam (repairing the world). As usual, we have a fund raising lesson centered on Purim, where we make and sell hamentaschen with all proceeds going to the project of the student s choice. We will be making hundreds of hamentaschen during class for two weeks before Purim. If you want to help you are welcome to do so. It is a blast making hundreds of cookies with this age group. This year we will be learning about and contributing to three projects; Heifer International, Canine Cancer and the Humane Society. The students had a lesson researching about a dozen projects and with a great deal of conversation, decided on those three. You are invited to join us in the kitchen on March 6th and 13th between 10 and noon and please join us for the Purim Party on March 23rd. Shabbat at Home Dinner An update from Laura Schrager For the second facilitated Shabbat at Home program, Anaya Balter, Beth and Elie Halpern, Evan Ferber and Lynne Stockwell, Gary Schneider and Nancy Snyder, and Rebecca Zinn graciously offered to host people in their homes on February 26th. Twenty-four guests joined them, sharing in food, song, and fellowship. We hope the 4th Friday early services give everyone a chance to celebrate Shabbat in their home with family and friends. Old Temple Up for Sale Walk down to the corner of 8th and Jefferson and you will see it a For Sale sign on our original 1938 building. When we moved to what was then the Christian Science Church in 2004, we sold our first home to Calvin Johnson and K Records who have been wonderful stewards of the building. Since it went on the market we have received a few questions from members about the status of the historic elements of the building. When we sold the building, an amendment was attached to the deed that should the building be demolished or substantially renovated, TBH would retain the stained glass Star of David window and the cornerstones. That amendment will be in force for any future sale. Rest assured, that should anything be done to the building in the future, the historic elements will come into our possession. Now if a TBH member wants to buy it... TBH Safety Committee Update Submitted by Tikva Glantz, Committee Chair The Safety Committee, which includes, Eran Ben-Sira, Marcia Davis, Melinda Holman, Matthew Kennelly and Harriet Strasberg, will present a draft Safety Plan to the Board at their March meeting. The Committee recognizes that TBH members have differing views regarding our current safety, the threats to our safety, and the appropriate methods to keep us safe. We will present options to the Board that are sensitive to expressed concerns by members; recognizing that this is an issue that people feel strongly about. We hope to balance being safe and being welcoming. The committee s goal is to create a draft Safety Plan that encompasses as many potential threats to safety as is possible. This includes (but is not limited to): medical emergencies, fire, extreme weather and other acts of nature, vandalism/theft, intruders, active shooter. Following the presentation to the Board, a congregational meeting will be scheduled in the spring to discuss safety options and to decide upon a path forward.
