WALNUT WORD Vol. 18, Issue 4 April 2018 Rev. Dr. Krista S. Givens Pastor Sunday Schedule: Worship - 10:00 am office@walnutumc.org Children s Sunday School - 10:15 am Taking time to breathe. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. ~ Matthew 11:28-30 Almost three weeks ago, I returned from my vacation. I traveled 10,357 miles in the air (5,777 miles from LA to Frankfurt + 4,076 miles from Frankfurt to Mumbai + 504 miles from Mumbai to Nagpur) and 96 miles by car to arrive in Padhar, a small village in Madhya Pradesh, India. I then spent 4 days in Padhar visiting schools and students, meeting with parents, teachers and administrators, and checking on the progress of our work as a representative of Friends of Padhar Schools. I then travelled to Delhi for a tourist weekend, including a trip to Agra to see the Taj Mahal and a stay at a fancy hotel. That trip included 1314 miles in the air and 386 miles by car. My trip concluded by traveling to small village called Bahairim in the state of Maharashtra: 117 miles by road, where I stayed for 5 days and then returned home: 117 miles by car and 10,397 miles by air. While in Bahairam, visiting Panchsheel School, I finally got an opportunity to rest. Life in a village is slow-paced and my schedule opened up considerably, allowing me the time and space to think, to lay down my burdens and to breathe. After so much rushing around, I was finally able to write some reflections about what I d seen and done; I was able to spend some time in meditation and prayer; I was able to feel the presence of God traveling with me in and out of villages, meeting with new people, experiencing new things. Too often, we fill our schedules with things to do, moving from here to there, from task to task, and the busy-ness prevents us from breathing life in and seeing it for the gift it is. As I write this, Holy Week and Easter are completed, the busy-ness of the season is completed and we are moving into a new season of the church. We turn from Lent and toward the season of Easter; a season of celebration and rejoicing and a season to to remind ourselves that we are all blessed by new life through Jesus Christ. All the events during Holy Week were successful, meaningful and enjoyed by many and it was a great way to commemorate the final days of Jesus earthly life. But this time (the time AFTER Easter) is just as important for me, to reflect on what happened, the new experiences we shared, the impact of the gift of new life and the steps we need to take in order to be Christ s disciples. Let us take some time to breathe. And may your Easter season be blessed, Pastor Krista Pastor Krista with the teachers from Felix Convent School in Paratwada, India

WALNUT WORLD PAGE 2 Dear Families, WUMC Children s Ministry Happy Easter! We had a splendid Easter Family Fun event! We loved meeting and spending time with the children and their families. In April, these are the scripture lessons. Our main point will be Go and tell about Jesus! The memory Bible verse is He began to preach about Jesus in the synagogues. He is God s Son he declared. WALNUT WORLD PAGE 3 Walnut United Methodist Women We had a mission-filled, inspirational meeting in March. We had a special time filling care bags for the homeless, over 60 bags. It was fun walking around the tables carefully filling each bag with goodies. Thank you to everyone who donated tissues, ponchos, socks, gloves, toothpaste and brushes, combs, food items, wipes, etc. We appreciate Linda Wilford for organizing the event! Thank you to Jackie Navarro for giving the devotion and Shirley Dennis and Janet Harshman for providing the refreshments. We celebrated March birthdays. Note: We will need to cancel our meeting on April 14. On that Saturday, there will be a memorial service for Phil Hoover at Rose Hills at 11:00 am and a reception following at our church at 1:00 pm. We want to help at the reception. We offer our comforting prayers for his family. Our Ladies Tea on April 21 from 10 am-1 pm promises to be a special event! Please invite your family and friends for fellowship, delicious freshly baked scones, tea sandwiches, pastries, and tea. Our theme is Celebrating a Medley of Collections. WALNUT WORLD PRESCHOOL NEWS We have completed our Fall registration and we are full for the next school year. We have also completed sign-ups for our summer program and it looks like we are going to have a good summer. This month we will begin learning about Spring. What child doesn t like frogs, bugs, flowers and butterflies? By using the things children love in our teaching we hope to also bring about a love for learning. We will encourage the children to become aware of all the changes that occur when Mother Earth is coming to life and remember with them that all these wonderful gifts come from God. We will have Ponies and Critters come out to the school on April 19 & 20. The children will get pony rides and hands-on time with small farm animals. The children always have a great time! The end of April is conference time. The pre-k teachers have begun testing in preparation. These will begin April 23 through May 4. Parents sign up for a short visit with the teacher to discuss the child s progress and readiness for kindergarten. We do not have formal evaluations or conferences for our three s class but the parents can schedule a time to speak with the teacher if they feel a need to do so. Sincerely, Chris Torreyson Walnut United Methodist Preschool Director Right: On March 31, 2018, our family fun day took place.
