Holy Family Parish NEW TRANSITIONAL DEACONS Last Saturday, four young men were ordained to the transitional deaconate in La Crosse: Clayton Elmhorst, Matt Marshall, Mark Miller and Nate Kuhn. Hopefully you remember Nate, as he spent a summer with us in Prairie du Chien 3 years ago. Time certainly flies, and now we wait for one more year when he and the other 3 will be ordained to the priesthood. Although this year we will have only 1 ordination to the priesthood, having 3 next year will certainly be a blessing for our local church. Keep Nate and his fellow deacons in your prayers as they continue this journey to serve God and His church as priests. You may have wondered what the difference is between a transitional deacon and a permanent deacon. On the Easter Vigil, we were blessed to have Deacon Pat Jozefowicz with us. Deacon Pat is a permanent deacon, and helped out with our RCIA program this year. The liturgical roles of both are the same; to preach the Word of God and to serve at the altar. Although they cannot offer the sacrifice of the Mass or absolve through the sacrament of reconciliation or confirm (proper only to the bishop), they can offer the other sacraments. Baptisms, marriages, funerals are all things a permanent deacon can offer to a community, in addition to proclaiming the Gospel and preaching. They normally are married men, called to serve their local parish in this way. Many permanent deacons also serve their communities in a variety of other ways, from administrator to leading prayer groups and study groups to serving diocesan roles. If you have ever thought of serving in this way, and would like to discuss it further, please contact Fr. Jim. A transitional deacon, on the other hand, is a single man studying with the intent of being ordained to the priesthood. Their duties remain the same as a permanent deacon, and they serve by assisting at the altar, preaching and offering the sacraments proper to their office. In addition, all deacons have been installed as acolyte and lector. These are two roles that are often filled by other lay men and women in lecturing and serving the Mass, but are officially part of the training for deacons. Please keep all the young men studying for the priesthood in your prayers, as well as all young women considering religious life. God bless. Fr Jim PRAYER CORNER God, grant healing and peace to the sick of our communities and those who have requested our prayers. Our middle school forensics students who participated at St. Mary s competition were very successful. The school year is already in its fourth quarter! In addition to our regular schoolwork, this quarter involves: 7 th and 8 th grades going to Madison, teachers attending the spring diocesan meeting in Marshfield, 8 th grade Washington, D.C. trip, class trips, and graduation. The middle school teachers and students alike are enjoying our new Smart Board. Adverbs and adjectives are a little more fun with new technology. I think spring is finally here. Enjoy! Mrs. Luanne Atkins DIOCESAN ANNUAL APPEAL - 2012/2013 We would like to thank the following parishioners who have made the sacrifice to support the annual appeal this year.
