This is accomplished through the study of Sacred Scripture and by practicing the traditions handed down to us, especially the seven sacraments. By the help of Jesus' Grace, we seek to imitate Him in His faith, hope and charity so that we can receive His gift of salvation in eternal life.

Volume 67, No. 29 The Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 10, 2018 PASTOR S CORNER This weekend, as part of our Diocesan Centennial Celebration, we celebrate as a parish the 100th Anniversary of the creation of our diocese, The Diocese of Lafayette in Louisiana. Here at St. Landry Church our patron, St. Landry of Paris, serves as a "father" of sorts to our church family. The feast of St. Landry is today, June 10, so we decided to celebrate it today in conjunction with the Centennial Celebration. There will be a reception in the Valentin Hall kitchen after the 10am Mass, and I hope that you are able to come and celebrate the rich history of our church parish and diocese. St. Landry is a wonderful patron for us in both his teaching and example, and as we learn more about him, we can learn more about what our goals should be as a church community. His life has a great similarity to what Pope Francis is calling us to be, servers of God's people both in word and in deed. History is an important thing for us to remember. It reminds us of where we came from and can keep us rooted in the things that are truly good and time tested, and helps us not to repeat the mistakes of the past. Below is a summary of the life of St. Landry, our beloved patron. Speaking of History - Our Patron, St. Landry There are actually four St. Landrys: (1) Saint-Bishop Landry of Sées (c.405 480), located in the Basse-Normandie region of France; (2) Saint Landry of (Soignies) Belgium, also known as Saint Landry of Metz (c. 622 700); (3) Saint Landry of Savoy (1012 1050), who was a Benedictine monk of Novalise in Savoy; and (4) Saint Landry, Bishop of Paris, also known as St. Landry the Confessor, who died in 661 after serving as Bishop of Paris for some eleven years. Our church in Opelousas is named after this fourth St. Landry. In 650, during the reign of Clovis II, Saint Landry succeeded Audobertus as Bishop of Paris. During the famine of 650-51, Saint Landry sold all of his personal possessions, as well as some of the furniture and sacred vessels of the church, to feed the poor. In 651, Saint Landry founded a hospital, dedicated to St. Christopher, near the Cathedral of Notre Dame (which hospital later developed into the Hôtel-Dieu de Paris). This hospital was still in operation on our parish pilgrimage several years ago, and we were able to see the building on the pilgrimage. However, shortly after our visit, it was decided that the building could no longer be used as a hospital, so it will serve another purpose in the future. Saint Landry built the original church of St. Germain l'auxerrois, which became the parish of the kings of France. Saint Landry served as Bishop of Paris until his death, which occurred in 661. He was buried in the Church of Saint-Germain l Auxerrois in Paris, and today you can see his statue and frescos painted in St. Landry s Chapel at Saint-Germain l Auxerrois (we saw these on our pilgrimage as well). Let us remember to ask our patron to intercede for us in prayers for our church parish, as well call upon his intercession in time of need. St. Landry prayers cards are located at the doors of the church for your use in prayers. St. Landry, pray for us!! God Bless! Father Brady

Psalm 130 With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. 2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1 We too believe therefore we speak. Mark 3:20-35 It is the end of Satan. Most of the Cycle B gospel readings are taken from Mark. Mark s Gospel is a dramatic story with Jesus at the center. Jesus is always on the move, inviting his followers and Us to follow him. Mark wanted those who heard or read his Gospel to come to understand Jesus as the Son of God. Today we read as Jesus moves through a crowd rebuking those who misunderstand his power, warning those who blaspheme against the Holy Spirit, and redefining their understanding of family. Next Weekend: Ez 17:22-24; Ps 92; 2 Cor 5:6-10; Mk 4:26-34 PRAY FOR OUR SEMINARIANS -Ben Pitre -Cade LeBlanc -Matthew Pitre -Michael Vidrine -Sean Fontenot -Luke Johnson St. Landry, Opelousas St. Thomas More, Eunice St. Thomas More, Eunice St. John, Melville Our Lady Queen of All Saints, Ville Platte Our Lady Queen of All Saints, Ville Platte Father, in your plan for our salvation you provide shepherds for your people. PRAYER FOR HURRICANE SEASON O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude; you are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control. The Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season, we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem where a storm-less eternit awaits us. Amen.

Month of Ordinations - June, the month traditionally dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, is also the most common month for Priestly Ordinations due to the conclusion of seminary studies in May and the beginning of pastoral assignments in July. The vast majority of the priests of the Diocese of Lafayette were ordained in June; even since 1903, when Bishop Jules Jeanmard was ordained a priest on June 10 in New Orleans. In 2017, the Diocese of Lafayette ordained four men to the priesthood on Bishop Jeanmard s 114 th anniversary. In the Centennial Year of the Diocese, seven local men will be ordained to the priesthood on Saturday, June 23. National Association of Catholic Family Life Ministries in this Centennial Year, the Diocese of Lafayette is happy to host a national Marriage and Family Conference July 15-17 at the Cajundome Convention Center.
