St. Mary on the Hill April 23, 2017 Every fourth Sunday of the month at the 12:15 Mass we celebrate the Focus on Abilities Mass. It is a Mass at which we want to honor the gifts of people with disabilities. It is a Mass at which we want to witness to the fact that all people are welcome to be active in our faith community. And if the participation of persons with disabilities and their families in this inclusive Mass is to be real and meaningful, then our faith community must come to a deeper understanding of the broad range of disabilities that people face each and every day. So, each month we will focus on a certain disability in this bulletin. This month the focus is on Depression. World Health Day is celebrated each year on April 7. The theme of the 2017 World Health Day campaign was Depression- Let s Talk. What is depression? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is an illness characterized by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that you normally enjoy, accompanied by an inability to carry out daily activities, for at least two weeks. In addition, people with depression normally have several of the following symptoms: a loss of energy; a change in appetite; sleeping more or less; anxiety; reduced concentration; indecisiveness; restlessness; feeling of worthlessness, guilt or hopelessness; and thoughts of self-harm or suicide. Key points related to depression (from the WHO 2017 Campaign): * Depression is a common mental disorder that affects people of all ages and all walks of life * The risk of becoming depressed is increased by poverty, unemployment, life events such as death or a break-up, physical illness or problems caused by alcohol or drug abuse * Depression causes mental anguish and can impact on a person s ability to carry out the simplest tasks, sometimes * Untreated depression can prevent people from working and participating in everyday life * At worst, depression can lead to suicide * Depression can be effectively prevented and treated. Treatment usually involves either talking therapy or antidepressant medication or a combination of both * Overcoming the stigma often associated with depression will lead to more people getting help * Talking with people you trust can be a first step towards recovery from depression If you think that you might be depressed, talk with a family member, friend, a faith leader, healthcare professional or someone else you trust. There are services available in the Augusta area to help. Today is Divine Mercy Sunday. It has only been a part of Church devotions for the last 17 years, so an old goat like me whose devotional life was formed many years ago still prefers my devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Devotional practices are a rich part of our Catholic faith but they are not mandatory and always personal. At their best devotionals have the power to draw us deeper into a realization of God s love for us. Many, many Catholics have found devotion to the Divine Mercy to be very meaningful. The heart of this devotion is a trust that God s mercy can overcome sin. It is an invitation to all Christians to face the difficulties and trials that the world will face in coming years with an absolute trust in God s love. I am happy to report that on Monday morning I signed a contract with our new school principal, Mrs. Laura Webster. She will officially start her duties on July 1 st but I am fairly certain we ll be seeing Mrs. Webster interacting with our school faculty and families long before the beginning of July. In the bulletin next weekend, Maureen Lewis, who was chair of the search committee, will give a report as to why the committee found Mrs. Webster to be such an excellent candidate as the head of our parish school. I am grateful for the good work of the search committee. I am not so happy to report that my years as your pastor will be coming to an end on July 31st. Obviously, I was shocked to learn the news. But I ve had time to recover from the shock and can see some of the positives of this new beginning for you and for me. As you will see, I ll be okay and you will too. But since the official announcement has not been made yet, I really can t give more details at this time. I just wanted you all to know before the rumors started getting around. I hope Augusta will be my retirement home when what Fr. Dave Arnoldt has termed my twilight tour is completed. I will give my pastoral heart to the people of my new assignment but St. Mary on the Hill will always be home for me. I am so grateful for your prayers and support during this time of transition. What are some of the ways that you experience, feel, or see the presence of the risen Lord in your life?

Our support of diocesan agencies and ministries is one way that we respond to God for all we have received. Now through April 30, 2017 there is a special challenge to increase the success of the Bishop s Annual Appeal: year, the amount of the increase will be matched dollar for dollar. If a donor has already given or pledged to this year s BAA, and they increased their gift from last year, the increase will be matched dollar for dollar. could be spread out until December 31, 2017) the entire gift or fulfilled pledge will be matched dollar for dollar. CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL Next week is the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. Right now, over 40 percent of dioceses in the US are considered home missions because they are unable to fund essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Your support of this appeal helps ease the struggle of these dioceses. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this appeal. More information can be found at www.usccb.org/home-missions. Part of our tithe next week will be for the Catholic Home Missions Appeal.
