THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 15, 2018 TODAY'S WORSHIP Divine Service III LSB pages 184-202 L = Liturgist * = Stand C = Congregation PRELUDE WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS *OPENING HYMN Alleluia, Alleluia! Hearts to Heaven LSB 477 1. Alleluia, alleluia! Hearts to heav n and voices raise: Sing to God a hymn of gladness, Sing to God a hymn of praise; He who on the cross a victim For the world s salvation bled Jesus Christ, the King of Glory, Now is risen from the dead. 2. Alleluia, Christ is risen! Death at last has met defeat: See the ancient pow rs of evil In confusion and retreat; Once He died, and once was buried: Now He lives forevermore, Jesus Christ, the world s Redeemer, Whom we worship and adore. 3. Alleluia, alleluia! Glory be to God on high: Alleluia to the Savior Who has gained the victory; Alleluia to the Spirit, Fount of love and sanctity! Alleluia, alleluia To the triune Majesty! *INVOCATION AND GENERAL CONFESSION L: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. L: In the name of God the Father, source of all hope and light and life: C: Who has loved us with an everlasting love, who is faithful to His word and to His promises. L: In the name of Jesus Christ, C: The living word of God, the one who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. L: In the name of God, the Holy Spirit, C: Who brings us into the way, teaches the truth, and works faith within us. L: Let us confess our sins before God and in the presence of one another. C: Merciful Father, we pray for pardon, peace, and forgiveness for our sins. Because of the person and work of Jesus Christ, who suffered and died to pay the penalty of physical and eternal death which we deserve, forgive us and release us from our guilt. Amen. *THE ABSOLUTION *THE GLORIA PATRI (Taken from LSB, page 186) C: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. *THE KYRIE C: Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. *THE COLLECT OF THE DAY L: The Lord be with you. C: And with thy spirit.

L: Let us pray. THE FIRST READING for the third Sunday of Easter is from Acts 3:11-21, page 911: (5, 8, & 10:30) 11 While he clung to Peter and John, all the people, utterly astounded, ran together to them in the portico called Solomon's. 12 And when Peter saw it he addressed the people: Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk? 13 The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him. 14 But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15 and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. 16 And his name by faith in his name has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all. 17 And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. 18 But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled. 19 Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, 20 that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, 21 whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. THE EPISTLE READING is from I John 3:1-7, page 1022: 1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. 4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. L: This is the Word of the Lord. *ALLELUIA AND VERSE C: Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. *THE HOLY GOSPEL - according to St. Luke, the twenty-fourth chapter, verses 36-49, page 885: C: Glory be to Thee, O Lord. 36 As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, Peace to you! 37 But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit. 38 And he said to them, Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have. 40 And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, Have you anything here to eat? 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate before them. 44 Then he said to them, These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled. 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high. L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

*THE NICENE CREED L: We confess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed. C: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. L: And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, C: begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; L: And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. C: He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven L: and sits at the right hand of the Father. C: And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, L: whose kingdom will have no end. C: And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. L: And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, C: I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. HYMN OF THE DAY The Head That Once was Crowned LSB 532 (Tune St. Anne) 1. The Head that once was crowned with thorns Is crowned with glory now; A royal diadem adorns The mighty Victor s brow. 2. The highest place that heav n affords Is His, is His by right, The King of kings and Lord of lords, And heav n s eternal Light; 3. The Joy of all who dwell above, The Joy of all below To whom He manifests His love And grants His name to know. 4. To them the cross, with all its shame, With all its grace, is giv n; Their name an everlasting name, Their joy the joy of heav n. 5. They suffer with their Lord below, They reign with Him above, Their profit and their joy to know The myst ry of His love. 6. The cross He bore is life and health, Though shame and death to Him: His people s hope, His people s wealth, Their everlasting theme.
