SUMMARY STATEMENT The Official Catholic Directory and its predecessors provide annual listings of Catholic dioceses, archdioceses, parishes, clergy, religious orders, hospitals, schools, and other Catholic organizations and institutions within the United States. Since 1837, comparable details on the Church in Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, and various other countries have been appended, making these directories a rich source of historical information on the Church in North America and the British Isles. The Catholic directories for the United States have been photographed on microfilm by the Catholic University of America and the University of Notre Dame. INTRODUCTION The creation of this index reflects Marquette University's commitment to the support of research relating to the history of the Church's relationship with the indigenous peoples of the Americas. Moreover, it represents the culmination of nearly two decades of research experience in using the back issues of the Catholic directories for the United States. Since 1976, the Department of Special Collections at Marquette University has been acquiring related archival collections and facilitating their use. Most notable among them are the records of the Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions, the first national Catholic agency in North America and the first to be listed in a Catholic directory. It was soon found that the Catholic directories for the U.S. were immensely valuable for "tracking" the whereabouts of missionaries and their activities through what were often some very rapidly changing circumstances on the westward moving North American frontier. Later the directories proved to be the primary data source in compiling numerous institutional chronologies for a 12 state guide to repositories of mission records, the Guide to Catholic Indian Mission and School Records in Midwest Repositories, published in 1984. Chronologies of missions, parishes, religious institutes, and dioceses were essential for tracing the provenance and final destination of the records surveyed in the guide, due to the fluid 5

character of mission administration and because alternative mission histories were often lacking. Experience, however, has shown that listings in the directories have not always been accurate or complete. Often changes in the status of missions were first reported several years after the fact. Moreover, the quality and depth of information provided varied from diocese to diocese and from year to year, particularly in the period prior to 1900. Unfortunately, for the pre-1900 period, the directory is often the only surviving source of information on the openings, transfers, and closings of missions and stations. 6

CHRONOLOGY TO 1850 FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF ECCLESIASTICAL JURISDICTIONS IN NORTH AMERICA, MEXICO, CENTRAL AMERICA, AND THE CARIBBEAN Includes dioceses and archdioceses in North America, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, plus prefecture apostolates and vicariate apostolates after 1622. The listings for corresponding countries include the current name with the name at the time when the jurisdiction was erected, preceded by the date, and followed by the current name of the jurisdiction with its original name, if different. The first entry relates to the Vatican and international information about the Catholic Church. Thereafter, all entries are arranged alphabetically by contemporary names. Note that entries were omitted for some countries of Asia, Europe, and the Pacific for which only limited information was included in the directories. This information is found in the index under the entries of those nearby countries with "et at." following their names.
