2 P A G E 2 English Summer Camp team The first English Summer Camp team went to China to teach English in one public high school near Shanghai in 2007. The Chinese at that school were apprehensive, but they allowed us to come. From that July on, the summer camp has not only been invited to that same school eleven times, but teams now teach in two other high schools in that city. Actually, parents insisted that the camps be available to their children at the third high school. They were reported to say something like this, If the two other high schools get the camps, why can t we? Additionally, over the years, teams have taught in at least nine other cities. This year teams have five recurring teaching opportunities and possibilities to teach in nine cities from north China near Russia to cities around Shanghai and below. Three cities don t have teachers at this time. After the first trip, materials had to be developed to fit the teaching situation and the time allotted to teaching. Those materials, with stories from Creation to Jesus death, burial, and resurrection, were approved by the schools and the local government. After that, beginning, elementary, seventh grade, eighth grade, and advanced materials needed to be created. Many of these programs get improved and updated each year. It is a never ending process a labor of love. Every year the Lord shows Himself strong on behalf of the Chinese people. His love for them shines through in the way He places China on the hearts of His people here, the way He opens new opportunities for teaching, the way He protects the teachers so they can teach, the way the Chinese love the teachers and vice versa, and the way He bring divine opportunities to the team. He truly is in charge of these trips. Watching the hand of God at work strengthens the resolve to keep going back and strengthens the team s faith. Finding godly, trustworthy people to go to China each year proves to be a huge task. As we grow bigger, the desire to find sister churches that will send four to six people to specific cities intensifies. These teams would be under the English Summer Camp, would use the materials that have been developed for China, and would be trained by those who have gone before. Actually, this model would help the love of Christ be spread farther and wider in China. Please pray for... The team members to be prepared for the task ahead. The development of the training that will take place on April 14 and June 16. The materials to be updated and finished. Sister churches to take teams to China. This could even happen even this year. 3 Pastor s Corner P A G E 3 DANIEL S SEVENTY WEEKS, PART 17 In this series of articles, we are exploring a very important Bible prophecy, which is generally referred to as Daniel s Prophecy of the Seventy Weeks, found in Daniel 9:24-27. In the first installment, we explained the background of the giving of this prophecy. We then turned our attention to a textual analysis of Daniel 9:24-27 and began to break Andy Woods the prophecy down into ten manageable facts. I also proposed that as the reader tracks with me through the presentation of these ten facts, concepts, or ideas, he would develop a very clear understanding of the Prophecy of the Seventy Weeks. In turn, he would be rewarded by the Holy Spirit with greater confidence that the Bible is indeed God s Word, and he would also obtain a blueprint or timeline through which he would be able to understand how all end time events predicted in the Bible will ultimately come to pass. We then noted our first fact, which is the idea that the Prophecy of the Seventy Weeks concerns the nation of Israel in general and the City of Jerusalem. As previously noted, this prophecy has nothing to do with the present age of the Church. We then noted a second feature, which is the notion that the prophecy consists of a 490-year stop watch. We then noted our third feature, which is the idea that each year of Daniel s 490- year stopwatch consists of 360 days. We then introduced our fourth feature, which is the idea that at the end of Daniel s 490-year period Israel will be politically and spiritually restored. Our fifth fact pertains to the notion that Daniel s 490-year stop watch began to run on March 5, 444 B.C. Our sixth fact indicated that exactly 483 years elapsed between the beginning of the prophecy (March 5, 444 B.C.) and when Messiah formally presented His messianic credentials to the nation of Israel on Palm Sunday (March 30, A.D. 33). In other words, the first 69 weeks of the prophecy were fulfilled to the exact day. Seventh, in between the conclusion of the first 69 weeks of the prophecy but before the elapsing of the prophecy s 70 th week, there exists a gap of an unspecified duration of time. Eighth, the unelapsed portion of the Seventy Weeks prophecy comprises the future Tribulation period. Our ninth fact is that Daniel 9:27 provides a thumb nail sketch of the Tribulation period. This verse alerts us to the length, beginning point, middle point, and termination of the future Tribulation period. We are now prepared to examine our tenth and final fact. Fact # 10: A Relationship Exists Between Daniel 9:27 and Revelation 6 19 Similar Descriptions Our tenth fact is simply this: a relationship exists between Daniel 9:27 and Revelation 6 19. As we noted in our prior installment, there are great similarities between Daniel 9:27 and Revelation chapters 6 19 because both sections of Scripture describe the exact same future time. Daniel 9:27 is the thumbnail sketch of the Tribulation period, which gives us its starting point, middle point, ending point, and duration. However, John, in the Book of the Revelation, guided by the Holy Spirit, comes along and adds additional details. He takes the framework, or foundation initially given to Daniel, and simply adds more details to it. John frequently provides more details concerning things that will happen during the Tribulation period, things that Daniel does not mention, such as the Seal Judgments, which will happen very early on, and then the Trumpet Judgments, and finally the Bowl Judgments that will take place in the Tribulation period s second half. It is almost as if Daniel 9:27 is giving us the movie in black and white and then John comes along later and builds upon the same structure without altering it but simply adds color or more details to it. Therefore, to gain a comprehensive understanding of God s end time program one must read Revelation 6 19 and Daniel 9:27 in harmony with one another. Daniel 9:27 provides the framework and internal structure, while Revelation chapters 6 19 provides the walls and the roof. What Happens Before and After? As we continue to examine the interrelationship between the Books of Daniel and Revelation, we also (Continued on Page 4)

4 P A G E 4 Daniel s Seventy Weeks -Continued from page 3 T H E C O R N E R S T O N E learn of things that will happen both before and after Daniel s 70 th week elapses. For example, Revelation reveals quite a bit about the Church Age in chapters 2 and 3 where Christ addresses seven letters to seven churches in Asia Minor. Although debated, Revelation also may be making a passing reference to the event which will end the Church Age, which is the church s rapture. This glorious event may be typified to some degree in Revelation 4:1-2, which speaks of John s personal rapture to heaven. Following this event, as indicated previously, John gives us more details concerning the seventieth week of Daniel, or the future sevenyear Tribulation period. Once again, John does not alter the divine blue print already erected in Daniel 9:27, but rather simply adds more color and details, such as a description of the seven Seal, Trumpet, and Bowl judgments. Then John adds more details about what will end the seventieth week of Daniel, which will be the Second Advent of Jesus Christ. Although Daniel 9:27 described this event as the end being poured out on the desolator, John just adds more details such as Jesus returning on a white horse and defeating and sentencing the antichrist (the beast) and the false prophet (Rev. 19). Then John goes on and describes events that will happen after the seventieth week is completed. For example, immediately following the Tribulation period John speaks of an earthly kingdom (Rev. 5:10) comprising a thousand-year duration called the millennium (Rev. 20:1-10). During this period, the nation of Israel will be back in their land and in faith. Then, all the promises that God made to Israel will be literally fulfilled. You might recall fact number 4 earlier in this series. There, we discussed that Daniel 9:24 in six clauses alludes to the physical and spiritual restoration of national Israel. We also mentioned that these six clauses will become a reality once the 490-year time is completed. Thus, John in Revelation remains consistent with this same idea. He only clarifies that these six clauses, as Israel is back in faith, will be fulfilled literally for a thousand years during the millennial kingdom. After describing the millennial kingdom, John continues to chronologically describe future events. For example, he predicts what will happen at the very end of the Millennial Kingdom. There will be a global yet brief rebellion, which will be quickly squelched by God (Rev. 20:7-9). This kingdom era will then be followed by the Great White Throne Judgment, which is described in Revelation 20:11-15. [Revelation 20:11-15, Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. [12] And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. [13] And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. [14] Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. [15] And if anyone s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. ] During this Great White Throne Judgment, God will sentence all of those who have not trusted in Christ as Savior. As their unbelieving state is demonstrated by their name s absence from the Lamb s book of life, He consequently casts them into the eternal lake of fire. John continues with this prophetic chronology and describes what will take place after that Great White Throne Judgment, which is the dissolving of this present world (Rev. 21:1). At this point, the diligent Bible reader should also factor in Second Peter 3:10, which predicts the present world will be destroyed by fire. [2 Peter 3:10, But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. ] Then John continues and describes the glorious appearing of the New Heavens and New Earth that will replace the current earth. This coming new world is often referred to as eternity, or the New Jerusalem, or the eternal state. Its wonderful description is given in Revelation 21 and 22. So, my point is simply this: John in the Book of Revelation is merely taking Daniel chapter 9 and verse 27 and he is adding details. He explains with greater clarity what is going to happen during this seven-year Tribulation period. He explains also with greater specificity what will precede and follow this seven-year time. So, Daniel 9:27 and the book of Revelation fit together like hand in glove. This relationship explains why most Bible colleges and seminaries offer a class called Daniel Revelation. Such a course allows the study of both books together since both books and their accompanying concepts go together hand in glove. As we have carefully noted, this is especially true since a relationship exists between Daniel 9:27 and Revelation 6 19. Continued on Page 6

5 Page 5 Conclusion Based on our study of the Seventy Weeks prophecy, what have we learned? First, the prophecy specifically concerns the nation of Israel. Second, the prophecy in Daniel 9:24-27 covers a 490-year time. Third, each year of this prophecy consists of 360 days. Fourth, by the time the prophetic clock reaches its 490- year completion, Israel will be both politically and spiritually restored. Fifth, the 490-year prophetic clock began to run on March 5, 444 B.C. Sixth, exactly 483 years elapsed between the beginning of the prophecy (March 5, 444 B.C.) and when the Messiah formally presented His messianic credentials to the nation of Israel on Palm Sunday (March 30, A.D. 33). Seventh, in between the conclusion of the first 69 weeks of the prophecy but before the elapsing of the prophecy s 70 th week, there exists a gap of an unspecified duration of time. Eighth, the unelapsed portion of the Seventy Weeks prophecy comprises the future Tribulation period and Ninth, Daniel 9:27 provides a general overview of the future Tribulation period. Tenth, a relationship exists between Daniel 9:27 and Revelation 6 19. I hope that I have delivered on my initial promise. At the beginning of this series, the promise that I made to you was that if you will persevere with me in understanding this great Prophecy of the Seventy Weeks (Dan. 9:24-27), then two great things will happen to you. First, you will walk away with great proof that the Bible is, in fact, the Word of God because you will see in this prophecy that only God could have known these things in advance. Second, you will be given a grid or a timeframe for understanding all end times events. All of this should result in our praise of God as we study His end time program!
