Give God the Glory A curious feature of the first half of Mark's Gospel is the pattern of Jesus working a miracle, then telling the recipient of the miracle to keep still about it. Many theories have been offered: Mark is setting the stage for the great "secret" revealed when Peter will proclaim Jesus the Messiah at Caesarea Philippi; more skeptical commentators offer that Jesus, fully aware of human nature, knew that the way to spread the news was to tell people to keep it secret. The insight into this secret-keeping that serves us well, however, is that Jesus was initiating his public ministry according to the pattern that Paul describes. He was doing it for the glory of God--not for his own benefit, but for that of all. Paul would later write in Philippians that Jesus "humbled" himself to become like us. And we see this humility at work in today's healing of the leper. Jesus is trying to reveal the presence of God's reign among the people, not so that he himself might receive the glory, but so that God would be glorified through him. Imitating this pattern, which Paul encourages the Jewish and Greek Christian factions in Corinth to do, still serves us well today.copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Main Office and Pastoral Council Updates For those who remember, last year I opened the process of combining the offices under one roof based on the suggestion from the Cluster Task Force that visited in 2016-17. While the current arrangement of three separate offices provides maximum convenience for our parishioners, it s not the best arrangement for our staff to serve you and for me to lead as pastor. For those who wonder how soon a decision will be made of where the main office will be, I would like to respond, Not soon enough. In November, I wrote to you that I was waiting to get estimates from an architect for two potential sites for a cluster office, the rectories at St Philip and Our Lady of Peace. Since then, I ve discovered a neutral site that could be a candidate for a cluster office. I m not publicizing the location of the neutral site because the site does not belong to the church. I don t want to publicize a possible neutral site because parishioners might assume the neutral site is a guaranteed option. Right now, I am in discussions with the owners of the neutral site. When I know that the neutral site has a stronger chance to be a cluster office based on the feedback of the current owners, I will inform the cluster parishes of the neutral site. Another update is regarding the pastoral councils in the cluster. Last April we heard a recommendation by a Cluster Task Force to reduce the weekend Mass schedule in preparation for the day (not if, but when) our cluster is served by only one priest. While the most memorable announcement that evening was the Mass schedule, there were recommendations given for parish life in general, including the pastoral councils. The Cluster Task Force recommended that we have one pastoral council with representation from each parish so that the pastor is not overloaded with meetings. While I see one council as a goal that will take time to materialize, in the mean time, I would like to take specific steps towards that goal. One, I will be forming three advisory councils one for each parish because I need a source of input from my parishioners. I have not determined how members will be selected nor how many will be on the councils. Two, because the recommendation was made to form one pastoral council, I am dissolving the existing pastoral councils of the three parishes, effective immediately. I have already written to the members of the pastoral councils to inform them of this update. I wanted to thank them as well for their service to their parishes. On a final note, I will be on family vacation this weekend, visiting my sister s family in New Hampshire. Pray for safe travels as I venture into snow country! Peace, Fr.
