83 Peter Tells the Sahedri About Jesus Acts 4:5-14 BIBLe BACKGROUND FOR LEADERS Earthly Power The Sahedri was the rulig body of the Jews. It had authority i all religious matters. Oe of the Sahedri s duties was to deal with cases of blasphemy. Members of the Sahedri probably viewed Peter s ad Joh s actios as blasphemy. Peter ad Joh claimed that they were able to heal a ma somethig oly God could do through the power of Jesus. So they called Peter ad Joh before them. Heavely Power Whe asked the source of his power to heal, Peter replied that the power came from Jesus, whom God had raised from the dead. The Sahedri had tried to cover up the Resurrectio (Matthew 28:11-15), but Peter coteded that the healed ma stadig before them proved that Jesus is alive. The disabled ma was healed through Jesus power, ad Peter s forceful speech before this powerful group of religious leaders was made possible by the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 4:8). God was with Peter i a special way, as Jesus had promised he would be whe people were goig about his work (Matthew 28:20). alog this course, they were also leadig their atio toward destructio. What was the Sahedri s respose? Astoishmet! How could these simple me, with o traiig i the Jewish rabbiical schools, mout such a clear ad covicig biblical ad theological argumet? They may have remembered the similar thigs they had thought about Jesus (Joh 7:15). Jesus had supported his claims through the miracles he had performed, ad ow the disciples had doe the same. Everyoe had see the disabled ma beggig at the Temple, ad ow he stood before them, healed. What could they say? The Sahedri had o aswer. The Jesus Coectio Two thigs gave Peter courage i this itimidatig situatio. First, he was relyig o the Holy Spirit, ad secod, he kew that Jesus is alive. This kowledge gave Peter full ad ultimate trust i Jesus. We have the same Holy Spirit that empowered Peter. What more do we eed to be courageous i the situatios we face today? Ask God to help you with a particular situatio you re facig. You ca write your prayer here. Powerful Truth Why did t the Sahedri immediately deouce Peter ad Joh? Perhaps the truth, told with such power, dumbfouded them or eve coviced them of what they really had doe. I verse 12, Peter idirectly heaps o more accusatio. By sayig that salvatio is oly through Jesus, Peter was sayig the leaders beliefs ad actios were isufficiet for that purpose. He was sayig that if they cotiued to dey Jesus, o other power was available to save them. If they cotiued Grades 5 & 6 Lesso 9 Sprig Quarter
