Studies in Bible Doctrine Topic: Bibliology - The Doctrine of the Bible Scripture: II Timothy 3:16-17 Memory Verse: Matthew 24:35 Lesson 1 Bibliology - The Doctrine of the Bible INTRODUCTION: Bibliology is simply the study of the Word of God. The Bible is the most amazing Book in the world. The Bible alone tells us where we came from, why we are here, and where we are going. To reject the Bible leaves us without any purpose in life. To reject the Bible as God s Word leaves us in the world without any sure principle. Ignore the Bible and every man does that which is right in his own eyes. Without the Bible who is to say what is right or wrong? Our acceptance of the Bible is the difference between joy and sorrow, peace and turmoil, living and existing, hope and despair, heaven and hell. I FACTS ABOUT THE KING JAMES BIBLE A. 66 books in the Bible from Genesis to Revelation B. 1,189 chapters in the Bible C. 929 chapters in the Old Testament D. 260 chapters in the New Testament E. 31,175 verses in the Bible F. 810,697 words in the Bible G. Psalm 119 - the longest chapter in the Bible (176 verses) H. Psalm 117 - the shortest chapter in the Bible (2 verses) I. Esther 8:9 - the longest verse in the Bible (91 words) J. John 11:35 - the shortest verse in the Bible (2 words) - in the Greek Bible the shortest verse is I Thessalonians 5:16 K. Psalm 118:8 - the middle verse of the Bible (the middle two words are the Lord ) L. Ezra 7:21 - contains all the letters of the alphabet except J M. The Old Testament covers a period of about 4,000 years, while the New Testament about 2,000 years N. It takes 70 hours and 40 minutes to read the Bible through at pulpit rate O. It takes 52 hours and 20 minutes to read the Old Testament and 18 hours and 20 minutes to read the New Testament P. One could read the Bible through in a year by reading less than 12 minutes a day

Q. The vocabulary of the Bible is quite limited using only 6,000 different words (Shakespear used 20,000 words) R. The average word in the Bible contains only 5 letters S. The word Lord occurs 8,000 times in the Bible T. The word and occurs 46,627 times in the Bible II THE BIBLE IS THE VERY WORD OF GOD A. The Bible claims to be the Word of God over 2,500 times in the Old Testament and 500 times in the New Testament. The Lord Jesus Himself declared that the Scriptures are the final authority. John 10:35-...and the scripture cannot be broken (the Bible never contradicts itself) Luke 24:27- And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. B. While some books contain some truth the Bible is nothing but truth. All the vast libraries do not contain as much truth as the Bible 1) it is archeologically correct - over 5,000 places mentioned in the Bible have been definitely located. In every instance the Bible has been proven true. 2) it is astronomically correct a. Hipparchers - a Greek astronomer who lived a few hundred years after the prophet Jeremiah (600 BC) said, There are only 1,056 stars in the heavens; I have counted them. Now, modern astronomers estimate that there are over 100 billion stars. The Bible said this hundreds of years before even Hipparchers lived: Jeremiah 33:22- As the hosts of heaven cannot be numbered... b. Astronomers have photographed millions of stars and have found that no two are alike. The Bible already said this: I Corinthians 15:41-...for one star differeth from another star in glory. c. Astronomers have discovered a hole in the northern part of the universe (black hole) where there are no stars. The Bible said this long ago: Job 26:7- He stretcheth out the north over the empty place... d. For centuries man believed the earth was flat and all the while the Bible said: Isaiah 40:22- It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth... e. Astronomers, for years, said that the moon produced its

own light, but the Bible said: Job 25:5- Behold even to the moon, and it shineth not... 3) It is medically correct a. George Washington died during a time when doctors believed in blood-letting to restore one s health. Now we realize that it is usually the case that more blood is needed, not less. Leviticus 17:11- For the life of the flesh is in the blood... b. According to chemists, the universe is composed of 118 elements and the dust of the earth consists of 16 of these elements, all of which make up our bodies! The Bible had already recorded - Genesis 2:7- And the Lord formed man of the dust of the ground... 4) It is meteorologically correct a. Torricelli discovered that air has weight but long before that the Bible said - Job 28:24-25- For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven; To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure. b. Only in recent years has science begun to understand the rain cycle upon the earth. The Bible told us about it back in Solomon s day (900 BC) Ecclesiastes 1:7- All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again. Job 26:8- He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds; and the cloud is not rent under them. c. Today we understand that the wind currents flow from the equator to the poles and back again. This is exactly what the Bible said all along. Ecclesiastes 1:6- The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits. III THE BIBLE IS INSPIRED OF GOD DEFINITION: INSPIRATION - that operation of the Spirit of God which renders a speaker or writer infallible in the communication of truth from God. (God-breathed) Inspiration is simply the means used by God to accurately transmit to man His revelation. (II Timothy 3:16; II Peter 1:21; Hebrews 1:1-2; Revelation 1:19) A. Three views of inspiration 1) The intuition theory (natural inspiration) - This theory states that

the Bible is only the writings of men due to man s own intelligence and goodness. (Romans 3:10-12; Isaiah 64:6) This view denies that there is anything supernatural about the Bible and thus that the Scriptures are no more inspired than the other writings of men. THIS IS A FALSE DOCTRINE. Romans 3:10-...There is none righteous, no not one. 2) The illumination theory - This theory states that only the writer was inspired and not the very words of the Scripture. This would mean that the Bible only contains the Word of God. THIS IS A FALSE DOCTRINE. (Matthew 4:4; 24:35) Matthew 4:4-...Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. 3) The dictation theory - This theory states that every word was dictated exactly to the writer by God even using the writer s personality in the writing. (II Timothy 3:16; Matthew 4:4; I Corinthians 2:13) This is Bible Doctrine. II Timothy 3:16- All scripture is given by inspiration of God... NOTE: IV We believe in the verbal, plenary inspiration of the Scriptures. (VERBAL - every word PLENARY - complete ) We believe that every word is completely inspired of God. THE BIBLE IS PRESERVED BY GOD A. God has promised to preserve His Word forever What good would it do to inspire a perfect Word of God and then not preserve it? (Psalm 119:89; 12:6-7; Matthew 5:18; 24:35; I Peter 1:23-25) Matthew 5:18-...Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law... B. The King James Bible is the preserved Word of God in our English language God has used this Bible to start more revivals, found more churches, and see more souls saved than any other. Everywhere this Bible has gone, people have been saved and even given their lives for the faith. Nations which began with this Bible, have been blessed of the Lord and are the leading countries of the world today. 1) The King James Bible is the only English version which was translated from the textus receptus ( received text ). This text has been handed down and preserved from the time of Christ and His disciples to modern times. All other English versions are based upon a different set of manuscripts ( vaticanus and sinaiticus ). 2) The King James Bible is the only English version which has no

financial copyright. Every book, tract, or publication has a copyright which protects its writer from having it reproduced by others to make profits for them. But, the text of the King James Bible has no copyright. Anyone can print it, quote it, and reproduce it at any time without having to ask permission from anyone. All other so-called Bibles being printed today carry a copyright on their text except the King James Version. V THE BIBLE IS USED FOR GOD A. God uses His Word to convict (Hebrews 4:12; Acts 2:37) Hebrews 4:12- For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword... B. God uses His Word to instruct (II Timothy 2:15; 3:16-17) II Timothy 3:16- All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. C. God uses His Word to guide (Psalm 119:105; 119:130) Psalm 119:105- Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. D. God uses His Word to judge (John 12:48) John 12:48-...the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. TEACHERS TIP: THE BIBLE WILL KEEP YOU FROM SIN OR SIN WILL KEEP YOU FROM THE BIBLE. NEXT MEMORY VERSE: Genesis 1:1
