The BE Attitudes Matthew 5:1-1616 Part 1 of 3 (vv. 1-5)

True Righteousness What is true righteousness? Vs 20 is, I Think the key to understanding the purpose for the Sermon on the Mount

20 For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:20, NASB

True Righteousness What is true righteousness? Vs 20 is, I Think the key to understanding the purpose for the Sermon on the Mount Its one of the most misunderstood messages He gave some think it s a legalistic plan of Salvation, others a charter for world peace, others still think it doesn t even apply yet

True Righteousness The sermon is actually 3 chapters He is graphically exposing the false religion of the Pharisees, and telling what being a true Christian is The first 16 verses deal with real Christian character, our mindsets or, attitudes about life and the world This is the first of 6 messages on True Righteousness from this chapter

When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. 2 He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying, 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.

6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

10 Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

13 You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again?? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. 14 You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your

light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:1-16, 16, NASB

A. The beginning Vs 1-2, the customary Jewish teaching postures

When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. 2 He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying Matthew 5:1-2, NASB

A. The beginning Vs 1-2, Rabbi sits Signal to his followers that the lesson begins Notice who comes to hear the teaching

A. The beginning Vs 1-2, Rabbi sits Signal to his followers that the lesson begins Notice who comes to hear the teaching This is not a universal world peace message Specific to us

A. Poor in Spirit Vs 3, the first be-attitude

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:4, NASB

A. Poor in Spirit Vs 3, the first be-attitude Blessed is the Greek word Makarios, or happy Secret to happiness again, again, the Greek is key Humility Humility to estimate one s self correctly The attitude is toward our selves not poor spirited (no backbone), but that we know ourselves, accept it, and be me to glorify God

B. The second Vs 4-6 cover what our attitudes toward our sins should look like

4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Matthew 5:4, NASB

B. The Mournful Vs 4, my attitudes toward my sins should be mourning Truly sorrowful those who continue in a lifestyle of sin have a calloused heart It s a terrible warning sign-- True Christians feel sorry for their sins When we confess He is faithful to forgive

C. The Meek Vs 5, Gentle, not weak

5 Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth. Matthew 5:5, NASB

C. The Meek Vs 5, Gentle, not weak The Greek, again is key The same root word as a wild stallion trained and tamed it has not lost any of its strength, it is merely controlled an attitude we should possess Relying on God, not self to defend us

Take Home! 1 st of 3 BE-Attitude messages Our Attitude towards self should be true humility Our Attitude toward our sin should be Mourning and Meek Repent and trust God for Strength
