The Walking in Faith Travel Guide Cary Presbyterian Church Cary NC An Introduction for Parents The idea of a this Guide first came to our attention in an article printed in Alert magazine, our denomination's former educational ministry periodical. Westminster Presbyterian Church in Marion, Indiana had published and implemented the use of such a guide, called a Primer, in 1991, and had written about their success. Our Christian Education Team has enthusiastically endorsed the idea for our congregation, and what you see is the final product. Albert Curry Winn's book, A Christian Primer: The Prayer, The Creed, The Commandments, suggests that a primer is "a brief collection of timehonored words and documents that can socialize children and new Christians and nominal Christians into the Christian society that can powerfully impress upon them Christian ideals and values." Central to Winn's Primer are the Lord's Prayer, the Apostles Creed, and the Ten Commandments. These were central to Calvin's Catechism and the Heidelberg Catechism (this latter included in our Book of Confessions), also. These three documents are in our Travel Guide, but also included are well-known prayers, traditional songs, Bible verses, and common parts of Presbyterian liturgy, in order to help our children and you become intimately acquainted with the rich heritage of Christian faith, expressed and developed in the church. Intentionally learning by heart and using these fundamental expressions will better graft our children into the covenant community of Christ. We provide you with a copy of the Travel Guide, and will be pleased to answer questions or provide any assistance necessary to help your child accomplish mastery of the material. We encourage discussion and questions about the specific items so that understanding occurs, not just rote memorization. The Footsteps to Faith Travel Guide is divided by age groupings so as to provide appropriate learning for each age level. Levels are sequential. In the beginning, older children may want to start at lower levels and work their way up to their present level. This may take more time and require a bit more of them, but we are confident that they can do it. Level achievement will be awarded upon successful recitation of the items to a Pastor, the Director of Christian Education, Teacher/Shepherd, or Team Leader of the Christian Education Team. Recognition of level achievement will be done in the regular service of worship. Certificates will be awarded to children who have completed a particular level. (Again, these will be done sequentially.) It is our hope that the Walking in Faith Travel Guide of Cary Presbyterian Church will be a vehicle to help your child in his or her faith journey. We are convinced that it will assist your child to know and love and serve Jesus Christ by a more complete identification with Christ's body on earth, the church. The Proverbs of the Old Testament say it best: Train up a child in the way he (or she) should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6) August 2008 The home is the primary Christian educator of our children, with the church in the supporting role. The church has your children for one or two, sometimes more, often less, hours a week. Their Christian education remains the task of parents and others on the home-front. But we, the church, will and do help. Church school teachers will be using the Footsteps to Faith Travel Guide to supplement our regular curriculum and will introduce the topic/text in church school. Parents and children will work on learning the items at home.
