God is Just

We Long for Justice

Psalm 73:1-10 (ESV) Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. 2 But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. 3 For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. 4 For they have no pangs until death; their bodies are fat and sleek. 5 They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind. 6 Therefore pride is their necklace; violence covers them as a garment. 7 Their eyes swell out through fatness; their hearts overflow with follies. 8 They scoff and speak

Psalm 73:1-10 (ESV) 8 with malice; loftily they threaten oppression. 9 They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongue struts through the earth. 10 Therefore his people turn back to them, and find no fault in them.

Psalm 73:10-14 (ESV) Therefore his people turn back to them, and find no fault in them. 11 And they say, How can God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High? 12 Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches. 13 All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence. 14 For all the day long I have been stricken and rebuked every morning.

When we worship justice as God rather than God as God, it leads to Envy Bitterness Doubt Denying aspects of faith Bargaining

We long for justice as long as it doesn t apply to us.

Psalm 73:15-20 (ESV) 15 If I had said, I will speak thus, I would have betrayed the generation of your children. 16 But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, 17 until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end. 18 Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin. 19 How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors! 20 Like a dream when one awakes, O Lord, when you rouse yourself, you despise them as phantoms.

God is Just Genesis 18:25 (ESV) Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?

God is Just Deuteronomy 10:17 (ESV) For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is not partial and takes no bribe.

God is Just Psalm 97:2 (ESV) Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.

God is Just I John 1:9 (ESV) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

God is Just Revelation 16:5-7 (ESV) And I heard the angel in charge of the waters say, Just are you, O Holy One, who is and who was, for you brought these judgments. 6 For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and you have given them blood to drink. It is what they deserve! 7 And I heard the altar saying, Yes, Lord God the Almighty, true and just are your judgments!

Justice is rightfulness and lawfulness. Justice is the administering of punishments and rewards.

Psalm 82:1, 8 (ESV) God has taken his place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods he holds judgment 8 Arise, O God, judge the earth; for you shall inherit all the nations!

Psalm 99:1-5 (ESV) The LORD is king! Let the nations tremble! He sits on his throne between the cherubim. Let the whole earth quake! 2 The LORD sits in majesty in Jerusalem, exalted above all the nations. 3 Let them praise your great and awesome name. Your name is holy! 4 Mighty King, lover of justice, you have established fairness. You have acted with justice and righteousness throughout Israel. 5 Exalt the LORD our God! Bow low before his feet, for he is holy!

God is the ruler and God sets the rules.

Psalm 73:21-26 (ESV) When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart, 22 I was brutish and ignorant; I was like a beast toward you. 23 Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. 24 You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory. 25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. 26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

God is Just is good news because His justice protects the weak and the poor means people matter gives our actions meaning allows for the cross

Psalm 73:27 (ESV) Those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you.

Romans 5:9 (ESV) Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.

Jesus is the substitute for our sin for our salvation. That is why God s justice is good news for the sinner!

Psalm 73:28 (ESV) But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may tell of all your works.

I Peter 2:23 (ESV) When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.
