T R I N I T Y LUTHERAN CHURCH LUTHERAN CHURCH - MISSOURI SYNOD FARIBAULT MINNESOTA GOSPEL SERVICE WITH HOLY COMMUNION FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY AS WE GATHER Although Jesus does not say blessed are the patient as He speaks that special list of attributes of God s people that we know as the Beatitudes, the fruit of patience underlies the blessed are statements He does mention. It takes patience to be merciful and to act as peacemakers. Staying calm when being persecuted for righteousness sake takes patience. Enduring unfair criticism takes patience as well. There may even be a need for patience as we share with the saints in the worship life of the Church. May it be fully evident among us at all times! HYMN OF INVOCATION We Have Come to Join in Worship We have come to join in worship And adore the Lord our God. Let us come in prayer, expecting God to speak His mighty Word. All is vain unless the Spirit Of the Holy One comes down. Christians, pray and holy manna Will be showered all around. See them gather all around you, Those He bought at such a cost; See the weary, see the hurting, See the lonely, see the lost. Be His hand, and touch the needy; Be His gospel, let it sound! Be His body, and sweet manna Will be showered all around. Let us love our God supremely; Let us love each other, too. Let us care for all His people Till our God makes all things new. Christ will call us home to heaven; At His banquet we'll sit down; Christ Himself will rise and serve us Living manna all around. Words by Ken Bible and George Atkins, Music by William Moore, 1997 by Integrity's Hosanna! Music and Word Music, CCLI #918029 Please stand INVOCATION P In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Do you not know that you are God s temple and that God s Spirit dwells in you? C Walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Gospel (C) 2 CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Micah 6:8; 1 Corinthians 6:19 P Let us go to our patient, loving Father, confident of His forgiveness for Jesus sake. P Heavenly Father, C we confess that we fail to exhibit patience, the fruit of Your Holy Spirit, in our thinking, speaking, and acting. We have not loved You completely or our neighbors as ourselves. We have not walked humbly before our God. In Your great mercy, forgive, renew, and lead us so that we live as His faith-filled followers to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. HYMN OF THANKSGIVING Blessed Be the Name of the Lord Oh, for a thousand tongues to sing, Blessed be the Name of the Lord! The glories of my God and king! Blessed be the Name of the Lord! Refrain: Blessed be the Name, blessed be the Name, Blessed be the Name of the Lord! Blessed be the Name, blessed be the Name, Blessed be the Name of the Lord! I never shall forget that day, Blessed be the Name of the Lord! When Jesus washed my sins away, Blessed be the Name of the Lord! Refrain Charles Wesley, 1739, alt. and v. 4 by Anonymous/Unknown refrain by Ralph E. Hudson, Public domain WORD P For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish. C Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; P but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night. C He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. P The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. C Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish. PRAYER OF THE DAY P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray together, C Grant that Your Holy Spirit will strengthen us, so that we may be revealed as His followers in faith. Help us to use the Spirit s fruit of patience as we listen to our friends and await Your answers to prayer; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen

Gospel (C) 4 SECOND READING (Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.) 1 Corinthians 1:18-31 18 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart. 20 Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. 22 For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to 26 For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, 29 so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 30 He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, whom God made our wisdom and our righteousness and sanctification and redemption. C Glory to You, O Lord. 1 Seeing the crowds, [Jesus] went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. C He has been revealed to be Your Word in the flesh and has graciously called us, His adopted brothers and sisters, to bear the fruit of the Spirit as we continue the work of His Body, the Church. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, praising You forever.

Gospel (C) 6 HYMN OF PRAISE Count Your Blessings When upon life s billows you are tempest tossed, When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost, Count your many blessings, name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done. Refrain: Count your blessings, name them one by one; Count your blessings, see what God hath done; Count your blessings, name them one by one; Count your many blessings, see what God hath done. Are you ever burdened with a load of care? Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear? Count your many blessings, ev ry doubt will fly, And you will be singing as the days go by. Refrain So, amid the conflict, whether great or small, Do not be discouraged, God is over all; Count your many blessings, angels will attend. Help and comfort give you to your journey s end. Refrain Johnson Oatman 1897, Public domain THE WORDS OF OUR LORD P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST P As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until He comes. C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. P Lord hear us as we pray as You have taught us: LORD S PRAYER (See inside back cover of hymnal) PAX DOMINI P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C Amen. P Welcome to the Lord s table.

POSTLUDE * * * TO GOD BE THE GLORY * * * The Sacrament Of The Altar is celebrated at all three services in the confidence that our Lord gives us His very body and blood to eat and drink in, with and under the bread and wine for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our union with Him and one another. As we trust His words and repent of all sin, we proclaim His death until He returns. Because this act is a confession of our faith, Close Communion is practiced at Trinity. Anyone who is not yet instructed, in doubt, or holds a differing confession and yet desires to receive the Sacrament, is asked first to speak with a Pastor, Elder or Worship Assistant. Peace and Joy! The individual cups in the center of the tray (containing the amber color liquid) are prepared for those with concerns for alcohol consumption. Gluten free wafers are available in the container in the center of each tray.
