January 14, 2018 St. Kevin R.C. Church Page 2 Q. There is a container of broken bricks in the parking lot, where are they from? A. The bricks are from a few vertical cracks along the front wall of the church which had to be replaced. We also removed two damaged parapet walls(a barrier which is an extension of the wall at the edge of a roof). They had to be removed along with all the flat roofs to replace flashing ( refers to thin pieces of impervious material intended to decrease water penetration at walls to make buildings more durable). In addition, above many windows we had to replace lintels (a piece of steel that spans an opening (e.g., a door or window) and supports the masonry above it. Over time they rust and swell within the masonry wall. This process is known as rust-jacking and, if left unchecked, can crack apart mortar and leave bricks out of alignment. As the pressure grows, even the hardest masonry blows apart. A special thank you to all the parishioners of St. Kevin who donated to the Flower Collection which enabled the Church to be so beautifully decorated throughout the Christmas Season. A sincere thank you also to the parishioners who volunteered to decorate the Church on the Friday night before Christmas and Chris Leicht and his staff at Garden World on Saturday morning. Your spirit and hard work ensured that all parishioners and friends who visited St. Kevin Church truly experienced the solemnity and beauty of the Christmas Season! Church Page 6 Prayer for Vocations - Bishop DiMarzio Lord of the Harvest, we petition you as you have instructed us to ask for more laborers to serve in the vineyard of Your Church. You have told us that the harvest is rich and laborers are few and we experience this great need in the face of the challenge of the New Evangelization. We ask the Holy Spirit to inspire young men and women to seriously consider vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Help all of us to be effective instruments to encourage and support those whom you are calling to serve and lead the Church of Brooklyn and Queens in the future. Lord, you told the Apostles to put out into the deep. We ask for the grace and courage to accept your call as we pray and work for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious live. Today, Christian stewards search out the hidden presence of Jesus in their own lives every day. They know Christ is the Messiah who will one day bring about a perfect restoration to a troubled world. They further understand that they are sacraments of his hidden presence in the world. Their task is to make that reality known through their own words and actions. What is one thing we can do to be better stewards of Christ s life in us?
