January 1, 2017 3 Tevet 5777 President Susan Canter Rabbi Ellie Shemtov CKA is an egalitarian, all-inclusive Reform congregation for young and old, singles and couples, non-traditional and interfaith families. We welcome all. The Voice Happy New Year as we welcome 2017 A Message from Rabbi Shemtov Yes, I am writing yet again about love. Afterspeaking about love during the High Holy Days and writing about it lastmonth in this very column, love continues to call out to us. While our community has been listening, it is now time to begin to take action. Thismonth love calls out to us from Montana where in 1993 a menorah displayed in a Jewish home in Billings prompted someone to throw a brickthrough their window. As a result, the mostly non-jewish population fought back. Letting the world know that the national hatred of a few could not destroy what the folks in Billings had worked together so longto build, six to ten thousand residents of the city decorated their homes with menorahs. Todayin 2017, love calls out to us from Whitefish, Montana, where many residents have become the target of hateful, coordinated attacks online. After a neo-nazi and white supremacist website listed the namesand contacts of local Jews, they then called on readers to take action against them. Accordingto their website, the organization Love Lives Here was created in Montana s Flathead Valley in order to foster a caring, open, accepting, and diverse community, free from discrimination and dedicated to equal treatment for all their citizens. Althoughthe link below is meant mainly for the citizens of Whitefish, please note the ways we can support the community as well. http://us11.campaign-archive2.com/?u=6c56efb6083dbd23cca6d7544&id=a7c788d121&e=80eec15ad8 As a gentle reminder I ask you to remember that gemilut chasadim, acts of love and kindness begin at home. L Shalom, Ellie
