MISSION STATEMENT The Chabad Jewish Center: Is dedicated to serving the spiritual needs of all Jews with Ahavat Yisroel an unconditional love and concern for every Jew and to educate every Jew regardless of background or affiliation. Provides the education and means to promote Jewish knowledge, awareness and practice, strengthen Jewish identity and afford every Jew the opportunity to experience his or her Jewish heritage. Encourages positive action and offers educational services to help every organization, synagogue or group in its efforts to increase Jewish knowledge and observance. Working as a team Rabbi Yossi and Baila Brackman and their children endeavor to display true Jewish living with a focus on Jewish family life. 2

THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO AND ITS JEWISH POPULATION The University of Chicago is located in the Hyde Park neighborhood on Chicago s South Side. It is one of the most prestigious Universities in North America, priding itself in its high standard of academic excellence and achievement. Students attending the University of Chicago are from across the country and are usually among a select few from their graduating high school class to attend the University. There are approximately 1100 Jewish students at the university, of which the majority has had little formal Jewish education of any kind. When a child leaves for college, it becomes a time for self discovery. With an already weak Jewish identity, the university environment and all the various ideas, programs and classes that vie for their attention, makes being a proud and active Jew a struggle for many students. Chabad reaches out to these students, seeking to impact their lives and strengthen their Jewish identity. Chabad empowers young students to become active members of the Jewish community. At this crucial point in the life of a young Jewish student, Chabad is there to ensure that they are not lost in the web of ignorance and assimilation. In this tumultuous time, the Chabad Jewish Center is a beacon of light for the community too; providing many programs that benefit both adults and children alike, thus ensuring a Jewish tomorrow. Thanks to the generosity of the Rohr family, Rabbi Yossi and Baila Brackman have established a strong Chabad presence at the University of Chicago. From the humble beginnings of a small apartment to the bright building on 57 th Street they have made an impact on the Jewish community. HIGHLIGHTS SINAI SCHOLARS SOCIETY has been a huge hit on the campus. Over 65 students participated in this eight week course on Judaism based on the Ten Commandments. A record attendance at CHABAD HIGH HOLIDAY SERVICES at the exclusive Quadrangle Club. Following a vigorous advertising campaign, over 100 people at Kol Nidrei and more than 65 students enjoyed a delicious Rosh Hashanah dinner. In less than five years Chabad has become a mainstay of the Jewish community. JEWISH HERITAGE WEEK was celebrated by students from all walks of life. Activities included: Scribal Art, Kosher Day, Yiddish Discussion; Shabbat Candle Lighting and more. This year Jewish Heritage Week will be celebrated in May 2010. THE LARGEST SEDER ON CAMPUS was hosted by Chabad at the Ida Noyes Hall, with close to 100 students in attendance. A great time was had by all. A perspective on Israel and Iran was shared by Professor Charles Lipson at a Shabbat dinner. Over 50 students packed the Chabad House for this informative talk. Leon Leyson, the youngest survivor of Schindler s factory spoke to a packed crowd of over 250 people about his experience. THE CHANUKAH TOY DRIVE in conjunction with Chai Lifeline collected toys for children with terminal and life threatening illnesses. Other Jewish groups on campus have joined this humanitarian effort and are looking forward to seeing the smiles on the faces of these children. The Regenstein Library has become the place to catch a Chanukah donut during finals week of fall quarter. Sponsored by Chabad, over 200 donuts, menorahs and dreidles were distributed. LINKING HEARTS has finally gotten off the ground. Students spend an hour a week visiting seniors in their homes and provide some much appreciated conversation and humor. We feel it is important for students to be aware of those more vulnerable in our community, said Rabbi Yossi Brackman. 4

COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES In addition to the programs Chabad offers to students and faculty, Chabad has made it a goal to reach out to the Hyde Park community through a variety of programs and activities designed specifically for those that are not students. HEBREW CHAI September 2010 will see the re-opening of Hebrew Chai, a weekly learning program for local high school kids. The program features Torah study, speakers, Jewish crafts and discussion groups. HIGH SCHOOL PROJECT In conjunction with the Jewish Students Association at the University of Chicago Laboratory School, Jewish High Schoolers enjoyed baking matzos at a Model Matza Bakery organized by Chabad and in the fall had the opportunity to craft their own Shofar at the Shofar factory CHANUKAH ON ICE Hyde Park kids really enjoyed this great celebration on the Midway Plaisance Ice Rink. We are looking forward to an even better program this year. WOMEN S LEARNING GROUP Led by Baila Brackman, 25 women from the Hyde Park Jewish community meet around the Jewish holidays to learn and create a special holiday craft. KOSHER PICKLE MAKING was a huge hit. Sponsored by Hyde Park Produce, participants leaned about kosher through while making classic kosher pickles. WEBSITE The Chabad website www.chabaduchicago.com has become a central address for students and community to find out about Judaism and programs at Chabad. Powered by www.chabad.org, the website has proven to be a great success with hundreds of hits each month. The site is also on the university server making it accessible to anyone searching for something Jewish on the University website. 5

Despite the intense and rigorous study schedule at the U of C, Chabad has touched hundreds of students and given them the opportunity to experience the warmth of Jewish life. After 50 years of 0% growth in terms of new Jewish institutions in the Hyde Park/University of Chicago community, Chabad has opened a new stage of spiritual growth in this great Chicago neighborhood.
